Shifting From A Price Safety Net To A Revenue Safety Net, Bradley Lubben, Troy J. Dumler, G. Art Barnaby

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

In late July, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Farm, Nutrition, and Bioenergy Act of 2007, or the “2007 Farm Bill,” to reauthorize farm, food, and other agricultural programs for 2008 through 2012. This culminated more than two months of discussion in the House Agriculture Committee and subcommittees and reflected much of the policy direction championed by committee chair Collin Peterson of Minnesota.

In the Senate, the agricultural committee under Chairman Tom Harkin of Iowa has yet to begin formal consideration of the 2007 Farm Bill. However, given some comments from Senator Harkin, there are some elements of …

Relationships Between Brown Bears And Chum Salmon At Mcneil River, Alaska, Joshua Mcallister Peirce Aug 2007

Relationships Between Brown Bears And Chum Salmon At Mcneil River, Alaska, Joshua Mcallister Peirce

Biological Sciences

Since 1967, the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary (MRSGS) has been managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to 'provide permanent protection for brown bears'. Up to 144 bears have been identified in a summer at MRSGS, and 72 bears at once have been observed in the vicinity of McNeil Falls. In this study, 155 chum salmon were radio tagged as they entered McNeil River and monitored daily. In 2005 and 2006 bears killed 48% of pre-spawning tagged chum salmon and consumed 99% of all tagged chums below McNeil Falls where most of the run occurs. A retrospective …

Seasonal Oceanographic Influences On Pacific Herring And Walleye Pollock Distribution And Abundance In Nearshore Embayments Of Kodiak Island, Alaska, Mary E. Loewen Aug 2007

Seasonal Oceanographic Influences On Pacific Herring And Walleye Pollock Distribution And Abundance In Nearshore Embayments Of Kodiak Island, Alaska, Mary E. Loewen

Fisheries

The importance of Alaskan embayments as adult walleye pollock and Pacific herring habitat is unknown. Seasonal hydroacoustic and trawl surveys were conducted in three oceanographically distinct bays to correlate abiotic and biotic habitat factors with nearshore fish distributions around Kodiak Island. Relationships between fish densities and sea surface temperature and salinity, bottom depth, zooplankton density and diversity, bottom temperature and salinity, and water column stratification were analyzed through General Additive Models (GAMs). Bathymetry and temperature were consistently included as important habitat variables. Relationships between fish density and habitat variables differed by season and location, suggesting factors defining preferred habitat vary …

Quality Characterization And Process Design Of Salmon Oil Production For Human Consumption, Jiaqi Huang Aug 2007

Quality Characterization And Process Design Of Salmon Oil Production For Human Consumption, Jiaqi Huang

Fisheries

Salmon oil is an abundant source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. Finding more lucrative markets for this unpurified fish oil requires well designed purification steps to reduce impurities such as free fatty acids (FFA), oxidative components, moisture, minerals, and trace metals. The temperature dependency of the rate constants for lipid oxidation and rheological properties of unpurified oil were measured and modeled using the Arrhenius equation. Performances of chitosan and/or activated earth as adsorbents were investigated to remove impurities from the oil. Activated earth was found more effective in adsorbing primary oxidation products than chitosan. Neither …

Adrenal Responsiveness Of Black-Legged Kittiwake Chicks (Rissa Tridactyla): Interannual Variation And The Effects Of Nestling Status, Brood Size And Investigator Disturbance, John H. Brewer Aug 2007

Adrenal Responsiveness Of Black-Legged Kittiwake Chicks (Rissa Tridactyla): Interannual Variation And The Effects Of Nestling Status, Brood Size And Investigator Disturbance, John H. Brewer

Marine Biology

The adrenal response to stress in birds is characterized by the release of the hormone corticosterone. Measurement of corticosterone of individuals is increasingly being promoted as a means to gauge the effects of environmental change or human disturbance on populations. However, species respond differently to stressors based upon their natural history, individual life history stage and the context of the stressor; thus, the collection of baseline data from individuals in their natural environment has been advocated. We measured baseline and stress-induced corticosterone levels of 12-15 day-old black-legged kittiwake (BLKI) chicks from 2002-2005 in Chiniak Bay, Alaska. The goals of the …

Headwater Stream Invertebrate Communities: A Comparison Across Ecoregions And Logging Histories, R. Bruce Medhurst Aug 2007

Headwater Stream Invertebrate Communities: A Comparison Across Ecoregions And Logging Histories, R. Bruce Medhurst

Biological Sciences

Monitoring stream condition is not always conducted with understanding how climate may influence anthropogenic disturbances. Stream monitoring has traditionally been accomplished through sampling benthic invertebrates, while sampling drifting invertebrates as a potential monitoring tool has received little attention, in spite of drift often being easier and less expensive to sample. The objectives of this study were to understand how logging influences headwater stream invertebrate communities (benthic and drift) across two ecoregions in the Cascade Range, central Washington, and to determine whether drift samples might serve as a replacement for benthic samples in assessing headwater stream condition. Benthic and drifting invertebrates …

The Ecology Of Vertebrate Pests And Integrated Pest Management (Ipm), Gary W. Witmer Aug 2007

The Ecology Of Vertebrate Pests And Integrated Pest Management (Ipm), Gary W. Witmer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Across the world, vertebrates cause considerable annual damage to agriculture, property, human health and safety, and natural resources. Although some species of all vertebrate groups have been implicated in damage, the species most often involved in serious amounts of damage are birds and mammals. Agroecosystems have provided many new opportunities for vertebrates to exploit, resulting in their becoming serious "pests" with humans taking various steps to protect their agricultural resources. This conflict has intensified as the human population has increased, efforts to get more production out of traditional croplands have intensified, and marginal lands have been placed into crop production. …

Habitat Selection And Sightability Of Moose In Southeast Alaska, Susan A. Oehlers Aug 2007

Habitat Selection And Sightability Of Moose In Southeast Alaska, Susan A. Oehlers

Biological Sciences

We examined the role of scale and sex in habitat selection by radiocollared Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) on the Yakutat forelands, Alaska, USA. We used conditional logistic regression to quantify differences in habitats selected between sexes and seasons at 3 different spatial scales (250, 500, and 1000 m), and multi-response permutation procedure (MRPP) to test for differences in spatial distribution between the sexes. Sexes selected for habitats similarly during the mating season, when sexes generally were aggregated, whereas sexes exhibited differential habitat selection during the non-mating season when sexes were segregated. Both sexes selected habitats at the 1000 m …

Socioeconomic And Racial/Ethnic Differentials Of C-Reactive Protein Levels: A Systematic Review Of Population-Based Studies, Aydin Nazmi, Cesar G. Victora Aug 2007

Socioeconomic And Racial/Ethnic Differentials Of C-Reactive Protein Levels: A Systematic Review Of Population-Based Studies, Aydin Nazmi, Cesar G. Victora

Food Science and Nutrition

Background:Socioeconomic and racial/ethnic factors strongly influence cardiovascular disease outcomes and risk factors. C-reactive protein (CRP), a non-specific marker of inflammation, is associated with cardiovascular risk, and knowledge about its distribution in the population may help direct preventive efforts. A systematic review was undertaken to critically assess CRP levels according to socioeconomic and racial/ethnic factors.

Methods:Medline was searched through December 2006 for population-based studies examining CRP levels among adults with respect to indicators of socioeconomic position (SEP) and/or race/ethnicity. Bibliographies from located studies were scanned and 26 experts in the field were contacted for unpublished work.

Results:Thirty-two relevant …

Fish Bacterial Flora Identification Via Rapid Cellular Fatty Acid Analysis, Amit Morey Aug 2007

Fish Bacterial Flora Identification Via Rapid Cellular Fatty Acid Analysis, Amit Morey

Fisheries

Seafood quality can be assessed by determining the bacterial load and flora composition, although classical taxonomic methods are time-consuming and subjective to interpretation bias. A two-prong approach was used to assess a commercially available microbial identification system: confirmation of known cultures and fish spoilage experiments to isolate unknowns for identification. Bacterial isolates from the Fishery Industrial Technology Center Culture Collection (FITCCC) and the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) were used to test the identification ability of the Sherlock Microbial Identification System (MIS). Twelve ATCC and 21 FITCCC strains were identified to species with the exception of Pseudomonas fluorescens and P. …

Isotype-Specific Antibody Responses Against Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Locus Of Enterocyte Effacement Proteins In Adult Beef Cattle Following Experimental Infection, G. Bretschneider, E. M. Berberov, Rodney A. Moxley

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an important food-borne pathogen and cause of hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. Cattle are an important reservoir of E. coli O157:H7, in which the organism colonizes the intestinal tract and is shed in the feces. Vaccination of cattle has significant potential as a pre-harvest intervention strategy for E. coli O157:H7; however, basic information about the bovine immune responses to important bacterial colonization factors resulting from infection has not been reported. The serum and fecal IgG and IgA antibody responses of adult cattle to E. coli O157:H7 intimin, translocated intimin receptor (Tir), E. coli …

Vitamin E (Tocotrienols) And Prostate Cancer: A Proteomics Approach., Christian Mbangha Muenyi Aug 2007

Vitamin E (Tocotrienols) And Prostate Cancer: A Proteomics Approach., Christian Mbangha Muenyi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Proteomics is the large scale study of proteins in cells or organisms. The purpose of this study was to characterize the proteomic alterations occurring in a prostate cancer (LNCaP) cell line after treatment with delta-tocotrienol (a form of vitamin E not very prevalent from most dietary sources). We found that both gamma- and delta-tocotrienols induced time and concentration dependent growth inhibition and programmed cell dead (apoptosis) in LNCaP cells. Secondly, we used two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) to characterize changes in protein expression levels associated with this treatment. Our results show that a specific set of proteins are regulated at both …

The Effect Of Caffeine And Ethanol On Flatworm Regeneration., Erica Leighanne Collins Aug 2007

The Effect Of Caffeine And Ethanol On Flatworm Regeneration., Erica Leighanne Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Flatworms, or planarian, have a high potential for regeneration and have been used as a model to investigate regeneration and stem cell biology for over a century. Chemicals, temperature, and seasonal factors can influence planarian regeneration. Caffeine and ethanol are two widely used drugs and their effect on flatworm regeneration was evaluated in this experiment. Non-toxic levels of caffeine, a stimulant, and ethanol, a depressant, were determined. The tails of the flatworms were removed and the regeneration stage was analyzed every 3 days for 15 days to see the effect of these drugs alone and in combination on regeneration. For …
