A Prisoners' Charter? Reflections On Prisoner Litigation Under The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

This paper examines over twenty years of prisoner litigation under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, beginning with a brief consideration of the social and political context for prisoners into which the Charter was entrenched in 1982, before moving on to consider a variety of successful and unsuccessful prisoners' Charter claims. The author notes some ways in which the impact of the Charter has been diminished at the prison walls, including through a lack of full and meaningful access by prisoners to courts or other means of independent review of prison decisions and conditions, as well as by the …

The Effect Of Steam Conditioning Practices On Pellet Quality And Growing Broiler Nutritional Value., Sarah Elizabeth Cutlip Jan 2007

The Effect Of Steam Conditioning Practices On Pellet Quality And Growing Broiler Nutritional Value., Sarah Elizabeth Cutlip

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Feed currently incurs 60-65% of the total cost of broiler production. Pellets are the primary feed form for commercially-reared broilers. Understanding how to optimize pellet quality through precision thermo-mechanical processing may impact broiler performance and nutrient availability, thus cost of production. Steam conditioning represents a manipulable thermo-mechanical processing variable. Corn-soybean meal based diets were conditioned with one of four steam pressure x temperature combinations: 138 kPa at 82.2ºC, 138 kPa at 93.3ºC, 552 kPa at 82.2ºC or 552 kPa at 93.3ºC. High steam pressure and temperature conditioning were shown to increase pellet quality. Three additional diets were prepared: unprocessed mash, …

Identification Of A Novel Importin α Predominantly Expressed In Bovine Oocytes And Early Embryos., Jyothsna Tejomurtula

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Early embryonic development is a complex process that involves timely and quantitative control of gene transcription. Nuclear proteins, including transcription factors and chromatin remodeling proteins, are required for initiation of transcription in early embryos prior to embryonic genome activation. The nuclear transport of these proteins is mediated by transport factors such as importins. Through analysis of EST sequences from a bovine oocyte cDNA library and the database, we identified a novel transcript which shows sequence similarity to the importin α gene. The novel transcript (contig) is represented by multiple ESTs that are only present in the oocyte library and a …

Using The Social Cognitive Theory To Investigate Physical Activity In Middle-Aged And Older Married Couples: A Dyadic Perspective., Brian J. Ayotte

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research suggests that physical activity is positively associated with mental and physical health outcomes for adults of all ages. However, despite concerted effort to increase the activity levels of adults, the rates of adults who engage in regular physical activity remain low. The present study had two primary objectives: (a) to examine dyadically the role of self-efficacy and spousal self-efficacy in the amount of physical activity in which middle-aged and older adults engage, and (b) to test the full social cognitive theory in terms of how well it explains the variance in physical activity in a sample of middle-aged and …

Determining Consumer Perceptions Of And Willingness To Pay For Appalachian Grass -Fed Beef: An Experimental Economics Approach., Jason R. Evans Jan 2007

Determining Consumer Perceptions Of And Willingness To Pay For Appalachian Grass -Fed Beef: An Experimental Economics Approach., Jason R. Evans

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The U.S. market for commoditized beef is a dynamic one that has, over the last 30 years, seen decreases in per capita consumption and an increased reliance on large, integrated feedlot facilities that focus on efficient weight gain and producing carcasses deemed desirable according the USDA quality grading system. Because of the problems inherent in the conventional production system and the existence of farm-to-retail price spreads that do not favor primary cow-calf producers, analyses of alternative beef production and marketing strategies that facilitate enhanced profitability and simultaneously address surging consumer demand for specialty food products are necessary. To that end, …

First-Time Mothers' Parenting Knowledge During Their Infant's First Year: Relations With Information Sources, Social Support Networks, Maternal Self-Efficacy, And Infant Development., Nichole L. Elliott Jan 2007

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A mother's knowledge about parenting and child development is an important facilitator of effective parenting behavior. Research suggests that an infant's healthy development is influenced by his or her mother's parenting behaviors (Kenny, Bowen, & Starte, 2004). Although past research has established the relations between parenting knowledge and many maternal and infant characteristics, the importance of this topic necessitates further research. The current study was conducted to assess relations among mothers’ parenting and milestone knowledge, mothers' sources of information about parenting and child development, mothers' social support network density and satisfaction with the availability of their support networks, mother's parenting …

Declines of Steller sea lion ( Eumetopias jubatus) populations in the Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska could be a consequence of physical oceanographic changes associated with the 1976–77 climate regime shift. Changes in ocean climate are hypothesized to have affected the quantity, quality, and accessibility of prey, which in turn may have affected the rates of birth and death of sea lions. Recent studies of the spatial and temporal variations in the ocean climate system of the North Pacific support this hypothesis. Ocean climate changes appear to have created adaptive opportunities for various species that are preyed upon …

Termite Resource Partitioning Related To Log Diameter, Deborah A. Waller

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The termites Reticuliterines virginicus and R. flavipes are sympatric in forests along the eastern United States from Florida to Maryland. These congeners construct subterranean nests, forage on surface and buried wood, and appear to have very similar ecological requirements. In the present study, I examined host-wood selection by these species in a coastal forest over two years. Logs inhabited by R. virginicus had significantly greater diameters than those used by R. flavipes. It is not known whether this pattern resulted from species-specific differences in preference for host size or competition for preferred logs. Host-wood temperature did not differ for …
