Anaesthesia For Interventional Neuroradiology, Aliya Ahmed Jan 2007

Anaesthesia For Interventional Neuroradiology, Aliya Ahmed

Department of Anaesthesia

There have been rapid and significant advances in diagnostic and interventional radiology, including interventional neuroradiology, in recent years. Many intracranial vascular pathologies are being successfully managed by endovascular interventional neuroradiology techniques. These techniques include procedures like embolization of vascular tumours and arterio-venous malformations, coiling of cerebral aneurysms. etc. The support of anaesthesia team is requested for these therapeutic endovascular neuroradiological procedures. The main aims of the anaesthesiologist during any interventional neuroradiology procedure are provision of a physiologically stable and immobile patient, alteration of arterial blood pressure as necessary, and appropriate and timely management of complications. Provision of anaesthesia in remote …

Characteristics Of Cooked Chickpeas And Soybeans During Combined Microwave–Convective Hot Air Drying, Aoife Gowen, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam, Jesus Maria Frias, Jorge Oliveira Jan 2007

Characteristics Of Cooked Chickpeas And Soybeans During Combined Microwave–Convective Hot Air Drying, Aoife Gowen, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam, Jesus Maria Frias, Jorge Oliveira

Articles

Moisture content, shrinkage, water activity (Aw), color and texture of cooked chickpeas and soybeans during convective, microwave and combined microwave–convective drying were studied. Combined drying was significantly (P < 0.05) faster than either convective or microwave drying, and resulted in less shrinkage of the dehydrated product. Rapid burning occurred when samples were dried below a Aw of 0.27 ± 0.07 for chickpeas (P < 0.05), and 0.13 ± 0.04 for soybeans (P < 0.05). Both chickpeas and soybeans displayed a transitional behavior in texture when dried to a Aw below 0.40 ± 0.10 (P < 0.05) for chickpeas, and below 0.63 ± 0.15 (P < 0.05) for soybeans, when samples became brittle. Shelf stable dehydrated chickpea and soybean products with low water activity (Aw = 0.35) and good visual quality could be obtained within 14 min of combination drying.

Private Ordering And Intimate Spaces: Why The Ability To Negotiate Is Non-Negotiable, Michele Goodwin Jan 2007

Private Ordering And Intimate Spaces: Why The Ability To Negotiate Is Non-Negotiable, Michele Goodwin

Michigan Law Review

This review moves beyond a critique of Cherry's study to incorporate a radical new way of thinking about organ commodification as a social justice issue. Part I provides a brief empirical overview of organ demand in the United States, offering an alternative perspective and introducing data illexamined in commodification debates. Part II challenges the notion that private ordering abandons liberal and egalitarian values in favor of individualism over communitarianism. It also acknowledges the limitations of private ordering and addresses how its more problematic features, including the abuse of power, might be avoided. Part III argues for a hybrid system that …

Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 52(A) As An Ideological Weapon?, Bryan Adamson Jan 2007

Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 52(A) As An Ideological Weapon?, Bryan Adamson

Faculty Articles

In this article, the author explores Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 52(a) and standard of review choice to determine whether appellate judges can exploit its terms to pursue ideological goals. The author examines the operative terms of Rule 52(a), viz., findings of fact, clear error, and documentary evidence, and concludes that they are so malleable as to give appellate judges wide discretion in deciding whether clear error, de novo, or some other standard of review is to be applied. The article then goes on to identify fact typologies appellate courts invoke (historical, ultimate, constitutional, legislative, sociological, scientific, political, economic, jurisdictional), …

Fishery Conservation And Management Act Reauthorization: “A” For Effort, “C” For Substance, Madeline Kass Jan 2007

Fishery Conservation And Management Act Reauthorization: “A” For Effort, “C” For Substance, Madeline Kass

Faculty Articles

In one of its last acts of 2006, the 109th Congress passed the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act of 2006 (FCMRA), reauthorizing the nation's primary fishing law through the year 2013. The president signed on in early January 2007. Those involved in the reauthorization effort deserve kudos for achieving a successful bipartisan compromise, a relatively rare phenomenon in recent years. Congress also deserves praise for taking positive action towards improving existing law and for rejecting preliminary proposals designed principally to derail conservation efforts. Yet, in the face of unrelenting, catastrophic fish stock declines, it is unclear whether the …

Optimization Of Porcine Buccal Mucosa For In Vitro Evaluation, Upendra D. Kulkarni Jan 2007

Optimization Of Porcine Buccal Mucosa For In Vitro Evaluation, Upendra D. Kulkarni

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Porcine buccal mucosa has been extensively used as in vitro model to study the permeability of drugs and assess their potential to deliver through buccal route. Porcine buccal mucosa is found to be very similar to human oral mucosa in structure and function. However, the in vitro permeation studies across porcine buccal mucosa show high variability which is mostly due to the various experimental and biological variables that are often overlooked while conducting such studies.

The precise nature of the permeability barrier offered by the various tissue layers of buccal mucosa was investigated in this study. It was observed that …

Do Sagebrush Density And Vegetation Condition Affect Demography Of Brewer's Sparrows Nesting In The Blackfoot Valley?, Masanori Abe Jan 2007

Do Sagebrush Density And Vegetation Condition Affect Demography Of Brewer's Sparrows Nesting In The Blackfoot Valley?, Masanori Abe

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Vegetation condition can influence habitat quality by altering food abundance, predator abundance and species composition, and microclimate. In some habitats, livestock grazing alters vegetation condition in ways that affect the breeding success of passerines. Most sagebrush-dominated habitats have been heavily grazed by livestock, and the total area of sagebrush has declined substantially. Owing to this habitat loss and change, numbers of various sagebrush-obligate birds have declined, the Brewer's Sparrow among them. I examined the effects of cattle grazing on Brewer's Sparrow reproduction. Grazed plots, at the study-site scale, were characterized by higher potential nest-sagebrush density, and canopy cover, a higher …

Gardening Programs In Schools: A Proposed Solution To Reverse The Consequences Of The Current American Food Culture, Charlotte Grace Blessey Jan 2007

Gardening Programs In Schools: A Proposed Solution To Reverse The Consequences Of The Current American Food Culture, Charlotte Grace Blessey

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the problems with current food consumption and production practices, and proposes the implementation of school gardening programs as a possible remedy to these problems. Methods and procedures consisted of research on current publications, periodicals, internet sources and scholarly articles concerning these topics. It was found that current diet is a significant factor in widespread health problems facing populations today. This diet is intertwined with an environmentally destructive and vulnerable system of intensive industrial agriculture based on centralization, mass distribution, and standardization. School garden programs target children beginning at a young age and help to counter the culture …

Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) infections can in rare cases persist and cause lesions that may progress to cervical cancer. Cells in the lesions are not permissive for virus production, nor are cervical cancer cells. The intracellular environment is such that it prevents production of the highly immunogenic, viral structural proteins L1 and L2. One may speculate that inhibition of L1 and L2 expression is a prerequisite for persistence and cancer progression. We have therefore investigated how expression of HPV-16 L1 is regulated. We found that the only splice site in the HPV-16 late region, which is used to produce L1 mRNAs, …

The Effect Of Gm Label Variation On Perceptions Of Genetically Modified Foods, Alexandra Jane Costello Jan 2007

The Effect Of Gm Label Variation On Perceptions Of Genetically Modified Foods, Alexandra Jane Costello

School of Psychology Theses

This thesis investigates the factors which are suggested to affect perceptions of genetically modified (GM) foods. It first tests the extent to which the components of the Theory of Planned Behaviour and perceived `outrage' are able to predict intentions towards buying GM foods using linear regression. It then focuses on how GM label design characteristics and linguistic variations influence perceptions of GM foods including measures of hazard perception and purchase intention using ANOVA repeated measures. Modelling is then used to identify whether label variations affect the components of the Theory of Planned Behaviour, namely attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural …

Taxing Consumption And Other Sins, James R. Hines Jr. Jan 2007

Taxing Consumption And Other Sins, James R. Hines Jr.

Articles

Federal and state governments in the United States use income and payroll taxes as their primary tools to collect revenue. In the rest of the world, governments also use income and payroll taxes, but rely much more heavily than does the United States on taxing consumption. Consumption taxes take many forms, including general sales taxes, value-added taxes, and excise taxes on the consumption of specific items including gasoline, alcohol, tobacco products, firearms, air travel, telephone communication, and others. The U.S. government does not use a value-added tax, making the United States unique among high-income countries and a rarity in the …

Women's Empowerment And Health: The Role Of Institutions Of Power In Pakistan, N Qureshi, B T. Shaikh Jan 2007

Women's Empowerment And Health: The Role Of Institutions Of Power In Pakistan, N Qureshi, B T. Shaikh

Community Health Sciences

Women's right to health has been reiterated many times. However, there are social and cultural barriers in developing countries that hinder their empowerment. Women's low status, deprivation of education and lack of control over their own lives and bodies have a negative impact on their health status and that of their families. This paper discusses women's empowerment and health within the framework of the 4 institutions of power in a society-family, community, health care systems and the state--with special reference to the situation in Pakistan. It concludes that to improve women's health status, concerted efforts are needed by all these …

A Default-Logic Paradigm For Legal Fact-Finding, Vern R. Walker Jan 2007

A Default-Logic Paradigm For Legal Fact-Finding, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This paper presents a visual framework for modelling complex legal reasoning — reasoning that integrates legal rules and policies with expert and non-expert evidence. The framework is based on a many-valued, predicate, default logic. The paper first visualizes the two sides of the rule-evidence interface: rule-based deductions and evidence evaluation. It then explores ways to visualize several dynamics around that interface, including dynamics concerning evidentiary relevance, findings of fact, process decision making about motions, policy-based reasoning about rules and relevant-factor reasoning. The paper then concludes with visualizing dynamics across multiple cases and briefly discusses one pathway by which new legal …

Characterization, Community Structure And Ecological Importance Of Sponge-Associated Bacteria, Patrick M. Erwin Jan 2007

Characterization, Community Structure And Ecological Importance Of Sponge-Associated Bacteria, Patrick M. Erwin

All ETDs from UAB

The study of sponge-bacteria symbioses is emerging as a prominent field in marine biology and biotechnology, with implications ranging from a fundamental understanding of sponge ecology and insight into the evolution of prokaryote-eukaryote symbiotic interactions to natural products prospecting and bioactive metabolite synthesis. The research conducted herein integrates molecular genetic techniques with ecological methodologies to address fundamental issues of sponge-microbe associations. Bacterial communities associated with the marine sponges Hymeniacidon heliophila and Xestospongia sp. were compared to microbial assemblages from ambient seawater and the sympatric tunicate, Didemnum sp, using replicated clone libraries of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes and terminal restriction …
