Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Seminal plasma (SP) transforming growth factor β-1 (TGFβ-1) presumably is an immune modulator in mammalian female reproductive tract. Four experiments examined (1) distribution of TGFβ-1 and associated molecules in sheep uterus shortly after breeding, (2) role of SP in stimulating uterine TGFβ-1 as embryo enters the uterine horn, (3) SP TGFβ-1 on gene expression of immune tolerance related factors at embryonic attachment, and (4) relationship of SP TGFβ-1 and sperm characteristics in rams and bulls. Ewes were mounted (day 0) but not mated or were mated by intact or vasectomized rams or were inseminated with semen containing additional or less …

Visual Dysfunction : A Contributing Factor In Memory Deficits, And Therefore Learning Difficulties?, Elizabeth G. Bennett
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis is based on Educational Therapy (ET) practice which has found eye muscle imbalance is a key factor to be addressed in management of learning difficulties (LD). This level of oculo-motor (o-m) function is a 'hidden' handicap as individuals are unaware of the problem; it is not routinely tested; and is not generally included in learning difficulties research. O-m function is omitted in standard paediatric optometry tests, and in school vision screening. Eye exercises increase the range of binocular fields of vision by employing stereopsis glasses and red/green slides. Central vision loss was uncovered when students reported words, seen …

The Effect Of Different Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake By Immature Female Rats On Bone Mineralization And Strength., Embedzayi Tsanzi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has increased among adolescents. This may have health implication because sugar consumption has been suggested to lead to decreased calcium (Ca) intake and increased urinary Ca output and these effects on Ca balance may have a negative impact on bone. Also, the type of sugar added to beverages has also changed from sucrose to high fructose corn syrup resulting in higher fructose consumption. Although sugarsweetened beverage intake by adolescent has increased and the type of sugar consumed has changed; the effects of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption during the bone growth stage on skeletal acquisition and adult bone …

International Public Relations At Top 50 Global Brands: A Converged Or Diverged Approach?, Pitchpatu Waiyachote
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study was motivated by limited information about an approach that the top 50 global brand companies apply to their public relations strategies in areas considered to be smaller developing markets in Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Malaysia. Along with World Wide Web technology and a concept of globalization, the Internet brings information to targeted publics faster than ever before. Therefore, a purpose of this study was to examine which approach, convergence or divergence, the top 50 global brand companies commonly took to communicate with their target audiences in these two countries through their local web sites. An answer to …
Enhancing Food Safety And Quality: Part 1. Determining Effectiveness Of Electron Beam On Inactivation Of Salmonella Enterica Subsp. Enterica Serovar Montevideo. Part 2. Examining Growth Parameters Of Crypthecodinium Cohnii., Deborah Linnell James
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Through science, we can meet increasing consumer demand to make foods safer and healthier, both by increasing the safety by decreasing possible microbial contamination and by increasing the nutritive value of food by supplementation. This thesis focuses on two facets of food science: safety and value-added foods. The effectiveness of electron beam (e-beam) irradiation on the reduction of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Montevideo in pureed tomatoes was tested, and growth parameters of the microalga Crypthecodinium cohnii for production of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were evaluated. E-beam is a technology that uses ionizing radiation to destroy bacteria …
Multidimensional Approach To Nurse Client Communication In Two Malaysian Intensive Care Units, Faridah Hashim
Multidimensional Approach To Nurse Client Communication In Two Malaysian Intensive Care Units, Faridah Hashim
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Communication among patients and nurses m the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has received extensive attention in the nursing research literature. These studies have identified numerous factors both enhancing and impeding effective nurse client communication. Despite the extensive research attention paid to nurse client communication in an ICU setting, no studies can be located that take a multidimensional approach to exploring the factors serving to enhance or impede such nurse "client communications. The literature review searched from 1980 when the landmark study by Ashworth ( 1980) reported on nurse-patient communication in the ICU. Many studies followed on nursing communication

The effects of two herbivorous insects, Galerucella calmariensis Duftschmid and Myzus lythri L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), feeding on purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria L. (Myrtiflorae: Lythraceae), were measured in the presence of two insect predators, Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). A greenhouse cage experiment examined the direct effects of these predators on these herbivores, and indirect effects of predation on aboveground biomass, defoliation, number of leaves, and internode length. Eight treatment combinations with G. calmariensis, M. lythri, H. axyridis and C. carnea were applied to caged L. salicaria. The experiment ended …

Health Systems And Maternal Mortality, Neonatal Mortality And Child Health: Review Of Selected Service Delivery Models, Md. Noorunnabi Talukder, Ubaidur Rob
Reproductive Health
Effective maternal and child health services at the community level in developing countries are rarely available. In many developing countries the health systems cannot provide quality maternal and child health care services due to lack of adequate human resources; shortages of equipment, drugs, and supplies; and absence of proper referral mechanisms. Strengthening health systems is central to improving maternal and child health. A variety of targeted interventions have been implemented in the health systems of developing countries. This study was conducted to identify the health service delivery models that have contributed to the reduction of maternal, infant, and child mortality …

Age And Diet Strongly Affect Total Fat Body Protein In Lubber Grasshoppers, Leigh Erin Fuller
Age And Diet Strongly Affect Total Fat Body Protein In Lubber Grasshoppers, Leigh Erin Fuller
All Volumes (2001-2008)
Diet is the only environmental variable that has been shown to slow aging. Late-onset caloric restriction results in increased longevity in female grasshoppers. To better
understand the physiological processes involved, and how rapid the responses can occur, we studied the effect of diet on total fat body protein. We tested the effects of short-term treatments on the amount of fat body protein for day 20 and day 50 of adulthood: ad libitum feeding (free access to food), starvation (only water), caloric restriction (1.5g of lettuce) and heat shocking (60 min at 48°C). Grasshoppers were initially fed ad libitum and then …
Male Ae. Aegypti In Virus Amplification, Lauren Overstreet
Male Ae. Aegypti In Virus Amplification, Lauren Overstreet
All Volumes (2001-2008)
Male mosquitoes lack the ability to transfer arboviruses to vertebrates by bite, but they may be able to amplify such virus by alternative mechanisms. One possible scheme for male-involved amplification is male infection with virus by feeding on infected Florida nectars followed by inoculation of female mosquitoes via venereal transmission. In order to determine the ability of orallyinfected male mosquitoes to transmit Sindbis virus, virus viability was measured in various nectar solutions. Virus survived under insectary conditions in nectar solutions that varied from pH 5.2 - 7.4 and osmolarity that ranged from 285 - 647 mmol/kg. Virus survived in these …

Tests Of Diet And Insulin-Like Peptides On The Duration Of The 5th Instar Of Male Lubber Grasshoppers, E M. Wright, L J. Gordy
All Volumes (2001-2008)
Consuming fewer calories while maintaining adequate nutrition (i.e. calorie restriction), even if that diet is started late in life, rapidly increases longevity by slowing the aging process (Mair et al. 2003). The mechanisms underlying rapidly reduced mortality rate in response to late-onset calorie restriction are largely unknown. Calorie restriction is associated with lower insulin-like peptides (ILP) levels in many organisms (Tater et al. 2003). We have shown that calorie restriction throughout adulthood, and late-onset calorie restriction, increases longevity in female grasshoppers (Wells et al. 2005; Hatle et al. 2006). The exact role of ILP in the enhanced longevity due to …

The Art Of War : Deconstructing The Monolith Of The World War Ii Poster, Sean Williams
The Art Of War : Deconstructing The Monolith Of The World War Ii Poster, Sean Williams
Honors Theses
For most Americans, the introduction to World War II posters, or even the entire field of posters during wartime in general, comes in the form of an elderly, yet bold looking man wearing red, white and blue. He wears a striped hat, and stands with his finger pointed outwards. The message he gives is clear --"I want YOU!" This image has been faithfully reproduced in social studies and history textbooks for years. (Indeed, both generations of my family saw such an image in their school books).
Uncle Sam, though, dapper as he may be, is merely one example of hundreds …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
The objective of this research was to assess the impact of a nutrition education intervention on intake of total ω-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA) in heart patients. The intervention design was a randomized trial comparing 2 interventions: decisional balance (DB) and no decisional balance (NDB). The outcome measures were total dietary n-3 FA intake and food sources. Intakes were measured using an n-3 FA food frequency questionnaire at baseline, at 1 month (midpoint), and at 2 months (end). Participants were a convenience sample of 36 adults (15 males, 21 females) recruited from a local heart clinic. Data were processed using …
Aromatic Compounds In Three Varieties Of Turnip Greens Harvested At Three Maturity Levels, Georgia Jones, Ola Goode Sanders, Casey Grimm
Aromatic Compounds In Three Varieties Of Turnip Greens Harvested At Three Maturity Levels, Georgia Jones, Ola Goode Sanders, Casey Grimm
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Turnip greens (Brassica rapa) are commonly consumed in the southern U.S.A. Typically, they have a bitter taste, which increases with maturity, probably because of increased levels of glucosinolates. While glucosinolate degradation products have been isolated from various members of the Brassica family, the effect of variety and maturity on these products has not been determined. This study focused on the glucosinolate degradation products of three varieties of turnip greens: Purple Top, Seven Top and Tokyo Cross, harvested 45, 60 and 75 days after planting. Four volatile components (benzene acetonitrile, benzene propane nitrile, 1H-indole-3-acetonitrile and benzene ethyl isothiocyanate) were isolated, identified …

Are Sunflower Fields For The Birds?, Heath M. Hagy, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The northern Great Plains are home to a variety of birds throughout the year, particularly during migration. Migratory species use native and restored grasslands, shelterbelts, and agricultural fields for food and shelter in North Dakota. Blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) have been documented to cause economically important damage to some crops and thus, are sometimes the target of concerted harassment efforts. Few studies have assembled an inventory of nonblackbirds using small grain fields during the fall and spring in North Dakota that may be inadvertently affected by blackbird management. At least 94 nonblackbird species use crop fields in the spring …

As summer faded to fall in 2005, a hurricane hit New Orleans, a city so unique in its history that it has more history than many American cities. It was nonetheless an American city in these telling parameters: a city of luxury alongside squalor, two-thirds Black, one-fourth poor, with the gap between its rich and poor growing at a gallop as the waters of lake and river lapped gently along aging, grass-covered levees.
Freeze the frame before the waters rise, and what do you see? A devastated public school system, where Black children are labeled “failing,” along with their schools. …

It Depends On What The Meaning Of "False" Is: Falsity And Misleadingness In Commercial Speech Doctrine, Rebecca Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
While scholarship regarding the Supreme Court's noncommercial speech doctrine has often focused on the level of protection for truthful, non-misleading commercial speech, scholars have paid little attention to the exclusion of false or misleading commercial speech from all First Amendment protection. Examining the underpinnings of the false and misleading speech exclusion illuminates the practical difficulties that abolishing the commercial speech doctrine would pose. Through a series of fact patterns in trademark and false advertising cases, this piece demonstrates that defining what is false or misleading is often debatable. If commercial speech were given First Amendment protection, consumer protection and First …

Maternal Characteristics In Relation To Income In A Semi-Rural Community In Pakistan, A R. Siddiqui
Community Health Sciences
Women's health and socioeconomic status is fundamental to development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of monthly household income with demographic, nutritional and social characteristics in women living in a semi-rural location near Karachi. Thus 1111 mothers with at least 1 child under 5 years of age were interviewed. Self-reported monthly income was positively associated with gravidity, mid upper-arm circumference, cooking frequency per day and self and spousal literacy; it was negatively associated with number of occupants per room, wood used as cooking fuel, and spouse in a skilled occupation. Income is dependent on non-income factors …
