Effects Of Pre- And Postharvest Calcium Supplementation On Longevity Of Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus Cv. Superior Sunset), Sergio J. Sosa Nan Jan 2007

Effects Of Pre- And Postharvest Calcium Supplementation On Longevity Of Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus Cv. Superior Sunset), Sergio J. Sosa Nan

LSU Master's Theses

The sunflower is one of the most important specialty cut flowers produced. Sunflowers have a short and variable postharvest longevity that is dependent upon cultivar. Research in postharvest physiology of cut flowers indicates that calcium (Ca) may be involved in delaying flower senescence by postponing cell membrane degradation. Cut flowers with intact cell membrane structure and function maintain their water balance and last longer. This study was developed to determine the effects of Ca supplementation on longevity of fresh cut sunflowers. The cultivar ‘Superior Sunset’ was used in this study; the sources of Ca were Ca(NO3)2, CaCl2 or a chelated …

Deficits In Social Skills And Feeding Behaviors Associated With Adults Diagnosed With Autistic Disorder Living In An Institutionalized Setting, Cindy Terlonge Graham

LSU Master's Theses

Autistic disorder, a syndrome beginning in infancy and persisting into adulthood, has captured the attention of researchers and clinicians alike. Although this disorder has been studied since the mid-1940s, there is a lack of literature addressing certain adaptive skills in adults with autism. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in social and feeding skills between individuals with and without autistic disorder. Given the importance of acquiring these skills to facilitate proper adjustment and decrease potential health risks, better understanding of these behaviors in persons with autism is warranted. Participants comprised three separate groups: an autism group, …

Reproductive And Metabolic Effects Of Recombinant Equine Leptin On Seasonally Anovulatory Mares, Pamela Boliew Mitcham Jan 2007

Reproductive And Metabolic Effects Of Recombinant Equine Leptin On Seasonally Anovulatory Mares, Pamela Boliew Mitcham

LSU Master's Theses

Mares of poor body condition have low plasma leptin concentrations, while obese mares have the highest concentrations. Leptin is a primary signal of body condition to the brain in other species; therefore, low leptin concentrations in thin mares could contribute to their extended anovulatory period in winter compared to obese mares. The current experiment was designed to determine whether recombinant equine leptin, administered to seasonally anovulatory mares, would induce ovarian activity and ovulation in the winter. Leptin effects on metabolism were also studied. Beginning January 7, leptin-treated mares (n = 9) received daily i.m. injections of 10 mg recombinant equine …

Hiv/Aids Programming And Sexuality Of Young People Perinatally Infected With Hiv, Harriet Birungi Jan 2007

Hiv/Aids Programming And Sexuality Of Young People Perinatally Infected With Hiv, Harriet Birungi

Reproductive Health

These conference proceedings draw on preliminary data from an ongoing project implemented by TASO Uganda and the Population Council that contributes to the promotion of sexual and reproductive health rights of young people aged 10–19 years perinatally infected with HIV. The key argument is that HIV/AIDS programming in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa will need to acknowledge that the population of young people perinatally infected with HIV is growing and to specifically target that population. HIV/AIDS programming will also address the sexual desires of young people perinatally infected with HIV by providing them with information and practical support to understand …

Constitutive Expression Of Jagged-1 In 3t3-L1 Preadipocytes Suppresses Adipogenesis And Adipose Tissue Development, Jennifer Allen

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Notch signaling pathway regulates adipogenesis. To determine specific effects the Notch ligand Jagged-1 has on the regulation of adipogenesis, we transfected 3T3-L1 preadipocytes with either a constitutively expressed full-length human Jagged-1 construct or an empty vector control. These cells were grown in conditions promoting differentiation and then evaluated for lipid accumulation and gene expression. To test the role of Jagged-1 in adipose tissue development in vivo, transfected cells were examined for their ability to form fat pads after injection into nude mice. In vitro, cells constitutively expressing Jagged-1 accumulated less lipid and exhibited a delay in adipocyte protein expression. …
