Student Perceptions Of The Shift From Soft Drink Vending Machines To Milk Vending Machines In Schools, Jillian B. Trapini

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Soft drink vending machines are available in many schools across the nation. Some schools have recently removed soft drink vending machines and replaced them with milk vending machines. The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students’ (n = 84) perceptions of the shift from soft drink vending machines to milk vending machines in schools.

Students in this survey had an understanding of the importance of drinking milk, and students generally felt that purchasing milk from the lunch line was more convenient than from the vending machine. Students felt that the vending machine might contain warm, out of …

Annotated Bibliography On Women Business Owners: A Diversity Lens, Bonita L. Betters-Reed, Lynda L. Moore

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

When we take the lens of race, ethnicity, gender, and class to the collected academic work on women business owners, what does it reveal? What do we really know? Are there differing definitions of success across segments of the women businessowner demographics? Do the challenges faced by African American women entrepreneurs differ from those confronting white female entrepreneurs? Do immigrant female women businessowners face more significant institutional barriers than their counterparts who have been U.S. citizens for at least two generations? Are there similar reasons for starting their businesses?

Animal Rights Without Controversy, Jeff Leslie, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

Animal Rights Without Controversy, Jeff Leslie, Cass R. Sunstein

Law and Contemporary Problems

Many consumers would be willing to pay something to reduce the suffering of animals used as food. Unfortunately, they do not and cannot, because existing markets do not disclose the relevant treatment of animals, even though that treatment would trouble many consumers. Steps should be taken to promote disclosure so as to fortify market processes and to promote democratic discussion of the treatment of animals.

Situation Analysis Of The Sexual And Reproductive Health And Hiv Risks And Prevention Needs Of Older Orphaned And Vulnerable Children In Nyanza Province, Kenya, Milka Juma, Ian Askew, Alan Ferguson

Reproductive Health

The increasing number of children in Kenya who are orphaned or made vulnerable (OVC) from HIV/AIDS and other factors calls for a holistic understanding of their situation so that effective programs to address their needs can be designed. This is especially important for those areas hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, such as Nyanza Province. Little is known about the vulnerabilities of older orphans to risky sexual behavior, and whether they are more vulnerable than nonorphans. The Department of Children’s Services has initiated a cash transfer program to households taking care of OVC. The main objective is to provide a …

A field study was conducted in a high-elevation spruce–fir (Picea rubens Sarg. – Abies fraseri (Pursh.) Poir) forest in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to assess the effect of temperature on soil C storage and dynamics. In eight plots along an elevation gradient (1500–1900 m), we measured soil temperature, forest floor and mineral soil C, litter decomposition, soil respiration, and forest floor mean residence time. Mean annual soil temperature and annual degree-days above 5 °C were inversely correlated with elevation. Total soil C (166–241 Mg·ha–1) showed no trend with elevation, while forest floor C accumulation (16.3–35.9 Mg·ha–1) decreased significantly …

Utilization Of Corn Co-Products In The Beef Industry: Feeding Of Corn Milling Co-Products To Beef Cattle, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Leslie Aaron Stalker, Richard J. Rasby Jan 2007

Utilization Of Corn Co-Products In The Beef Industry: Feeding Of Corn Milling Co-Products To Beef Cattle, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Leslie Aaron Stalker, Richard J. Rasby

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Corn milling co-products are expected to increase dramatically in supply as the ethanol industry expands. Distillers grains, corn gluten feed, or a combination of both co-products offer many feeding options when included in pasture and feedlot diets. These co-product feeds may effectively improve cattle performance and operation profitability. When these co-products are fed in feedlot diets, adjustments to grain processing method and roughage level may improve cattle performance. Innovative storage methods for wet co-products and the use of dried co-products offer small operations flexibility when utilizing co-products. As new co-products are developed by ethanol plants, they should be evaluated with …

The ability of grazing animals to enhance quality of diet by selection is important in production. The study determined the effects of selection on dietary quality of cattle grazing monocultures of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss; SB), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.; SG), and big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman; BB) as influenced by plant maturity. Three ruminally-fistulated steers (295 kg) strip-grazed SB, SG, and BB at vegetative, elongation, early reproductive, and a regrowth stage of development. Selection was maximized by providing cattle access to 40 kg of DM/d per head. Clipped samples were compared with dietary samples accumulated during 45 min …

Production And Economic Comparisons Of Two Calving Dates For Beef Cows In The Nebraska Sandhills, M. C. Stockton, D. C. Adams, R. K. Wilson, T. J. Klopfenstein, R. T. Clark, G. L. Carriker Jan 2007

Production And Economic Comparisons Of Two Calving Dates For Beef Cows In The Nebraska Sandhills, M. C. Stockton, D. C. Adams, R. K. Wilson, T. J. Klopfenstein, R. T. Clark, G. L. Carriker

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Calving date for 120 cows in the Nebraska Sandhills was changed from the traditional calving season beginning March 15 (d 75) to one beginning June 15 (d 167) to match increased nutrient needs for lactating cows to immature grazed forages that are high in protein and energy. The hypotheses being tested were that 1) less hay and purchased feeds would be required, 2) production costs would be reduced, and 3) net returns would be greater for June-calving cows compared with their March-calving counterparts. All steer calves from 75 March-calving cows were moved to a feedlot within 60 d of weaning …

Ict Infrastructures In The Aging Society, J. E.M.H. Bronswijk, William D. Kearns, L. R. Normie

Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications

As Information and Communication Technology (ICT) penetrates dwellings worldwide, also the increasing number of older persons will become more dependent on information technology infrastructures. While ICT continues to advance quickly, the ergonomic refinement for use by older adults has lagged behind. In addition, technical problems exist, partly resulting from designers’ frequent use of proprietary products having little or no interoperability with products of other vendors. Fortunately, standards are emerging to address this problem; the cellular phone appears to be evolving into the general user interface for all, including older adults, and the addition of networking to ICT will significantly enhance …

The Commissions For Protection Of Child Rights Act, 2005 - A Critique Current Developments, Mani Gupta Jan 2007

The Commissions For Protection Of Child Rights Act, 2005 - A Critique Current Developments, Mani Gupta

National Law School of India Review

In this note, the writer comprehensively and critically analyses the various provisions of the Commissions for the Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005. The note takes a close look at the mandate, the composition, the powers and the functions of the two tier Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The note also vehemently argues for providing more financial autonomy to the Commission. The note then critically examines the innovative idea of a 'Children's Court.' Finally, it questions the efficacy of having the Commission, given the surfeit of commissions which have been entrusted the task of protecting human rights.

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: Rule violations among elite-level sports competitors and tragedies among adolescents have largely defined the issue of non-medical anabolic-androgenic steroid (NMAAS) use for the public and policy makers. However, the predominant and oft-ignored segment of the NMAAS community exists in the general population that is neither participating in competitive sports nor adolescent. A clearer profile of NMAAS users within the general population is an initial step in developing a full understanding of NMAAS use and devising appropriate policy and interventions. This survey sought to provide a more comprehensive profile of NMAAS users by accessing a large sample of user respondents …
