Model-Based Compartmental Analysis Indicates A Reduced Mobilization Of Hepatic Vitamin A During Inflammation In Rats, Sin Gieng, Michael Green, Joanne Green, Francisco Rosales Jan 2007

Model-Based Compartmental Analysis Indicates A Reduced Mobilization Of Hepatic Vitamin A During Inflammation In Rats, Sin Gieng, Michael Green, Joanne Green, Francisco Rosales

Faculty Publications

Vitamin A (VA) kinetics was studied in rats with marginal VA stores before, during, and after inflammation. Rats received orally [11,12-3H(N)]retinol ([3H]VA; day 0), and inflammation was induced on day 21 with lipopolysacchride (LPS) for 3 days (n = 5) or recombinant human interleukin-6 (rhIL-6) for 7 days (n = 5). Both the fraction of [3H]VA and retinol concentrations in plasma were reduced significantly by LPS or rhIL-6. Compartmental analysis using the Windows version of Simulation, Analysis, and Modeling software was applied to group mean data, and non-steady-state models were developed. After absorption, VA kinetics was described by a three-compartment …

An Analysis Of The Subjective Socioeconomic Scale Among Hispanic Immigrants And Caucasians, Mathew Glen Bowden Jan 2007

An Analysis Of The Subjective Socioeconomic Scale Among Hispanic Immigrants And Caucasians, Mathew Glen Bowden

Theses and Dissertations

Subjective socioeconomic status (SES) has previously been shown to be correlated with a large number of health measures. In this study, the subjective SES measure is modified and translated to measure childhood SES. The subjective SES scale is examined in a participant's hometown, community, and nation. Both an immigrant Hispanic and a Caucasian sample were studied (31 Hispanic males; 42 Hispanic females; 38 Caucasian males, 40 Caucasians females). Childhood SES was the most significant predictor of self-reported health in both sample groups.

Sustainable Development Data Availability On Internet, Pietro Caratti, Ludovico Ferraguto , Chiara Riboldi Jan 2007

Sustainable Development Data Availability On Internet, Pietro Caratti, Ludovico Ferraguto , Chiara Riboldi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Defining what Sustainability and Sustainable Development mean is a critical task, as they are global objectives, which cover different aspects of life often difficult to quantify and describe. Talking about sustainable development means dealing with the development and implementation of SD strategies at international as well as at local level. With this regard, SD information plays a key role in monitoring SD performances at different administration levels. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of sustainable data availability on the internet at international, European, national and regional level. The paper is novel in the fact that the …

Cottonwood And Antelope Range Livestock Research Stations Unit Report, Kenneth C. Olson Jan 2007

Cottonwood And Antelope Range Livestock Research Stations Unit Report, Kenneth C. Olson

South Dakota Beef Report, 2007

Two research stations, the Cottonwood and Antelope Range Livestock Research Stations, are located in western South Dakota that allow research projects focused on needs of range livestock producers in that region. The stations are comprised primarily of native rangeland that is grazed by cattle at both stations, and also by sheep at Antelope. The philosophy of the research efforts has been focused on conducting applied research to solve problems and address rangeland and livestock management opportunities relevant to the livestock producers and land mangers of the region.

Provider Adherence To Jnc 7 Guidelines And Blood Pressure Outcomes In African Americans, Rosalind Peters, Ramona Benkert, Karyn Butler

Peer Reviewed Articles

Objective: To measure provider adherence with the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7) and assess whether adherence is associated with improved blood pressure (BP) control among low-income African-American patients.

Design: Chart review.

Setting and participants: A primary care clinic for low-income patients within an urban, university health center. Data were obtained from charts of 128 hypertensive African-American patients enrolled in a larger study.

Measures: The Hypertension Quality Chart Review Index was used to measure adherence in the areas of cardiovascular risk assessment, lifestyle modification, pharmacologic treatment, and …

Evaluation Of Mixing Characteristics Of Diets Containing Modified Distillers Grains, Erik R. Loe, Bradley D. Rops, John T. Keimig Jan 2007

Evaluation Of Mixing Characteristics Of Diets Containing Modified Distillers Grains, Erik R. Loe, Bradley D. Rops, John T. Keimig

South Dakota Beef Report, 2007

Six mixes of feed were manufactured and analyzed to determine how sequence of ingredient addition into a feed mixer influences mixing characteristics when modified distillers grains (mDG) was used as a feed ingredient. Five mixes were manufactured using a 3-bar rotor mixer and one mix was manufactured using a staggered-rotor mixer. There were three diet types evaluated: 1) high-forage receiving diet; 2) high-grain finishing diet with ground grass hay (GH) as the roughage source; and 3) high-grain finishing diet with silage as the roughage source. Five samples were collected from each mix and were analyzed for particle size and nutrient …

Forage Quality: What Is It? What Can We Do About It? And, Will It Pay?, Garry D. Lacefield Jan 2007

Forage Quality: What Is It? What Can We Do About It? And, Will It Pay?, Garry D. Lacefield

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

Profitable livestock production almost always requires a forage program that will supply large quantities of adequate quality, homegrown feed. A major percentage of the feed units for beef (83%) and dairy cattle (61%) come from forages. In addition, forages supply an estimated 91%, 72%, 15% and 99% of the nutrients consumed by sheep and goats, horses, swine, and wildlife, respectively.

How I Produce, Manage And Market Forages, Bill Payne Jan 2007

How I Produce, Manage And Market Forages, Bill Payne

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

I would like to amend the title to: “How I Produce, Manage and Market Forages, Profitably.” My experience has led me to believe that keeping things simple has allowed me to focus better and that has led to profitability. This has led me to make every effort to reduce my reliance on machinery and to allow the cows to do the work. I focus on maximizing forage utilization and minimizing the number of days of feeding stored feeds.

A Cadmium-Transporting PIb-Type Atpase In Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, David J. Adle, Devis Sinani, Heejeong Kim, Jaekwon Lee Jan 2007

A Cadmium-Transporting PIb-Type Atpase In Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, David J. Adle, Devis Sinani, Heejeong Kim, Jaekwon Lee

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Detoxification and homeostatic acquisition of metal ions are vital for all living organisms. We have identified PCA1 in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as an overexpression suppressor of copper toxicity. PCA1 possesses signatures of a PIB-type heavy metal-transporting ATPase that is widely distributed from bacteria to humans. Copper resistance conferred by PCA1 is not dependent on catalytic activity, but it appears that a cysteine-rich region located in the N terminus sequesters copper. Unexpectedly, when compared with two independent natural isolates and an industrial S. cerevisiae strain, the PCA1 allele of the common laboratory strains we have examined possesses a missense …
