Effects Of Prescribed Fire On The Diversity Of Soil-Dwelling Arthropods In The University Of South Florida Ecological Research Area, Tampa, Florida, Celina Bellanceau Feb 2007

Effects Of Prescribed Fire On The Diversity Of Soil-Dwelling Arthropods In The University Of South Florida Ecological Research Area, Tampa, Florida, Celina Bellanceau

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Leaf litter samples were used to study arthropod diversity in the University of South Florida Ecological Research Area. Arthropods were collected from different plots of different prescribed burn frequencies (1year, 2 year, 5 year, 7 year and no burn frequencies). Differential responses of arthropods to burn frequency were studied. It was expected that burn frequency would affect arthropod richness and diversity and that the pattern of diversity and richness would follow the Intermediated Disturbance Hypothesis. It was also expected that richness and diversity would be correlated with the amount of leaf litter present. Preliminary results suggest that there are short-term …

Development Of A Reliable And Construct Valid Measure Of Nutritional Literacy In Adults, James J. Diamond Feb 2007

Development Of A Reliable And Construct Valid Measure Of Nutritional Literacy In Adults, James J. Diamond

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

NOTE: The Nutritional Literacy Scale can be found here: http://jdc.jefferson.edu/nls/1/

Background: Research into the relation of literacy to health status has not included measures of nutritional literacy. This may be a critical area in the study of chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, which can both relate to obesity and nutrition. This paper details the development and psychometric characteristics of the Nutritional Literacy Scale (NLS), offered as a measure of adults' ability to comprehend nutritional information.

Methods: In order to assess the internal consistency and construct validity of the NLS, demographic data, readability statistics, NLS scores and …

Is Oak Establishment In Old‐Fields And Savanna Openings Context Dependent?, Ian A. Dickie, Stefan A. Schnitzer, P. B. Reich, S. E. Hobbie

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

  1. Multiple factors are known to influence tree seedling establishment, yet the degree to which these factors depend on each other and on spatial context is largely unknown. We examined the influence of herbaceous competition and water and nitrogen limitations on tree seedling establishment as functions of distance from trees (within‐site spatial context) and site history (between‐site spatial context; as old‐fields vs. savanna openings).
  2. We grew Quercus ellipsoidalis E.J. Hill (pin oak) and Q. macrocarpa Michx. (bur oak) seedlings for 3 years in abandoned agricultural fields and savannas in central Minnesota, USA, near and distant from adult oak trees, with and …

Timescale Dependence Of Environmental And Plant‐Mediated Controls On Ch4 Flux In A Temperate Fen, Claire C. Treat, Jill L. Bubier, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill Feb 2007

Timescale Dependence Of Environmental And Plant‐Mediated Controls On Ch4 Flux In A Temperate Fen, Claire C. Treat, Jill L. Bubier, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill

Faculty Publications

This study examined daily, seasonal, and interannual variations in CH4 emissions at a temperate peatland over a 5‐year period. We measured net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), CH4 flux, water table depth, peat temperature, and meteorological parameters weekly from the summers (1 May to 31 August) of 2000 through 2004 at Sallie's Fen in southeastern New Hampshire, United States. Significant interannual differences, driven by high variability of large individual CH4 fluxes (ranging from 8.7 to 3833.1 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) occurring in the late summer, corresponded with a decline in water table level and an increase in air and peat temperature. …
