Probiotics In Tanzania: A Review, Ellena Andoniou, Grace A. Flesher

Empowerment and Development

The report is organized in five sections: Stakeholders, Context, Project, Outcomes, and Project Sustainability. The Stakeholders section provides background information on the Canadian and Tanzanian institutional partners and the expertise each brings to the Western Heads East project. The project participants, operating as a Community Based Organization under the name Tukwamuane, are also introduced in this section.

For any development project or research programme to be successful it must be both context-specific and context-appropriate; therefore, in Context the project setting is documented. The impact of the AIDS epidemic on Tanzania and its citizens, the nutritional status of the population, social …

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

To scope and clearly define current and future needs for aquatic animal health training and for systems for merit-based accreditation and competency assessments.

Provision of high quality aquatic animal health (AAH) services is a complex multidisciplinary activity. Hence, training programs must address all discipline areas to achieve the desired outcome of robust service delivery to meet all stakeholder group needs. The current and future needs for AAH training have been identified across many sectors through survey work and direct interviews with key stakeholders. There is a shortfall in both total capacity and more prominently, in the availability of high skill …

Gold’N Gro® 9-0-1 + 7% Zn Improves Corn Growth In Zn-Deficient Soil: A Preliminary Study, Julie K. Chard, Bruce Bugbee Mar 2007

Gold’N Gro® 9-0-1 + 7% Zn Improves Corn Growth In Zn-Deficient Soil: A Preliminary Study, Julie K. Chard, Bruce Bugbee

Nutrients

Zinc deficiency can limit growth, especially on soils with low organic matter and high pH. Chelated Zn fertilizers maximize Zn bioavailability. We sought to determine the effectiveness of soil-applied GOLD’n GRO 9-0-1 + 7% Zn, a chelated Zn source, to reverse or prevent Zn deficiency. GOLD’n GRO was applied at 0 to 30 quarts per acre in a high pH soil. Controls included columns treated with ammonium-nitrogen at the same level as the highest GOLD’n GRO treatment. Plants treated with GOLD’n GRO had twice the dry mass, were greener, and had increased zinc levels in the plant tissue compared to …

The Costs Of Inadequate Education For New York State, Clive R. Belfield

Policy Documents

This paper calculates the economic consequences for the state of New York from failing to ensure that all students graduate from high school. The analyses in this report indicate that there are substantial economic benefits from raising the rate of high school graduation for New York state. These benefits can therefore be interpreted as the maximum amount that could be spent by federal and state/local governments on educational programs to improve the graduation rate.

In Vivo And In Vitro Anaerobic Mating In Candida Albicans, Raluca Dumitru, Dhammika H.M.L.P. Navarathna, Camile P. Semighini, Christian G. Elowsky, Razvan Dumitru, Daniel Dignard, Malcom Whiteway, Audrey L. Atkin, Kenneth W. Nickerson Mar 2007

In Vivo And In Vitro Anaerobic Mating In Candida Albicans, Raluca Dumitru, Dhammika H.M.L.P. Navarathna, Camile P. Semighini, Christian G. Elowsky, Razvan Dumitru, Daniel Dignard, Malcom Whiteway, Audrey L. Atkin, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

Candida albicans cells of opposite mating types are thought to conjugate during infection in mammalian hosts, but paradoxically, the mating-competent opaque state is not stable at mammalian body temperatures. We found that anaerobic conditions stabilize the opaque state at 37°C, block production of farnesol, and permit in vitro mating at 37°C at efficiencies of up to 84%. Aerobically, farnesol prevents mating because it kills the opaque cells necessary for mating, and as a corollary, farnesol production is turned off in opaque cells. These in vitro observations suggest that naturally anaerobic sites, such as the efficiently colonized gastrointestinal (GI) tract, could …

Ncssfl’S Linguafolio Project, Jacque Bott Van Houten

Dimensions

On a Goethe-Institut-sponsored trip to Germany in 2001, world language consultants (a term that has now replaced that of supervisor) of several state departments of education were so inspired by the potential for improving and recording student learning they saw in using the European Language Portfolio that they immediately set about to create a similar tool for American students. This effort resulted in the self-assessment, reflective-learning tool, LinguaFolio. Five states—Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia— are now collaborating to orient teachers to LinguaFolio and guide them in its use. The first part of this article describes the five-state …

Partial Characterization Of Two Moderately Halophilic Bacteria From A Kansas Salt Marsh, Aileen M. Johnson, Lance R. Thurlow, Sam R. Zwenger, Eric T. Gillock

The Prairie Naturalist

Two bacterial species were isolated from a salt marsh located on privately owned land in Russell County, Kansas. Water samples from the saIt marsh were streaked for isolation on tryptic soy agar supplemented with 12 % NaCI. Visual scanning of the plates revealed two prominent colony types. The two colony types were subcultured repeatedly until axenic cultures were obtained. 80th of these organisms were shown to be moderately halophilic. The organisms were characterized partially by fatty acid methyl ester analysis, 16S rRNA sequencing, and scanning electron microscopy. These studies revealed that the bacteria previously were unreported members of genera Marinococcus …

International Recovery Plan For The Whooping Crane (Grus Americana), Third Revision

Endangered Species Bulletin

The Whooping Crane Recovery Plan was prepared under the authorities of the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, the Canada Wildlife Act of 1974, and the Canadian Species at Risk Act of 2003. Decision-makers are provided with an orderly set of events that, if carried to successful completion, will change the status of this species from the Endangered to the Threatened level. The Plan describes management and research actions that are underway and proposes additional actions needed to ensure the recovery of the whooping crane. Funding levels and time schedules are estimated, and priorities have been set for …

Family Income And Attitudes Toward Older People In China: Comparison Of Two Age Cohorts, Xiaolin Xie, Yan Ruth Xia, Xiaofan Liu Mar 2007

Family Income And Attitudes Toward Older People In China: Comparison Of Two Age Cohorts, Xiaolin Xie, Yan Ruth Xia, Xiaofan Liu

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Three hundred and five traditional college students and 159 baby boomers (40–55 years old) in China participated in the study with Kogan’s Attitude toward Old People [Kogan (1961) Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology, 62(1), 44–54] being used. Results from ANOVA showed overall, baby boomers held more positive attitudes toward older people than college students. There was a significant interaction effect between cohorts and family income; that is, the lower family income group in both samples did not differ significantly from each other, it was in the higher family income group that difference was revealed. Baby Boomers in the …

Landscape Context Outweighs Local Habitat Quality In Its Effects On Herbivore Dispersal And Distribution, Kyle J. Haynes, Forrest P. Dillemuth, Bryan J. Anderson, Alyssa S. Hakes, Heather B. Jackson, S. Elizabeth Jackson, James T. Cronin Mar 2007

Landscape Context Outweighs Local Habitat Quality In Its Effects On Herbivore Dispersal And Distribution, Kyle J. Haynes, Forrest P. Dillemuth, Bryan J. Anderson, Alyssa S. Hakes, Heather B. Jackson, S. Elizabeth Jackson, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

Past studies with spatially structured herbivore populations have emphasized the primacy of intrinsic factors (e.g., patch quality), patch geometry (e.g., patch size and isolation), and more recently landscape context (e.g., matrix composition) in affecting local population abundance and dispersal rate. However, few studies have examined the relative importance of each factor, or how they might interact to affect herbivore abundance or dispersal. Here, we performed a factorial field experiment to examine the independent and interactive effects of patch quality (plant biomass, leaf protein, leaf phenolics) and matrix composition [mudflat or non-host grass (Bromus inermis)] on planthopper (Prokelisia crocea) emigration from …

Production Of F1 Interspecies Hybrid Offspring With Cryopreserved Sperm From A Live-Bearing Fish, The Swordtail Xiphophorus Helleri, Huiping Yang, Leona Hazlewood, Sheila J. Heater, Paula A. Guerrero, Ronald B. Walter, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Despite study of sperm cryopreservation in more than 200 fish species, production of broods from cryopreserved sperm in live-bearing fish has not been demonstrated. This has not been due to a lack of effort, but instead is a result of the unique morphology, biology, and biochemistry of reproduction in viviparous fishes. For example, sperm of Xiphophorus helleri have a cylindrical nucleus, can swim for days after being activated, have glycolytic capabilities, and can reside in the female reproduction tract for months before fertilization. These traits are not found in fishes with external fertilization. The long-standing research use of the genus …

A Distributed Model Of Carbohydrate Transport And Metabolism In The Liver During Rest And High-Intensity Exercise, E Chalhoub, L. Xie, V. Balasubramanian, Joanne M. Belovich Mar 2007

A Distributed Model Of Carbohydrate Transport And Metabolism In The Liver During Rest And High-Intensity Exercise, E Chalhoub, L. Xie, V. Balasubramanian, Joanne M. Belovich

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A model of reaction and transport in the liver was developed that describes the metabolite concentration and reaction flux dynamics separately within the tissue and blood domains. The blood domain contains equations for convection, axial dispersion, and transport to the surrounding tissue; and the tissue domain consists of reactions representing key carbohydrate metabolic pathways. The model includes the metabolic heterogeneity of the liver by incorporating spatial variation of key enzymatic maximal activities. Simulation results of the overnight fasted, resting state agree closely with experimental values of overall glucose uptake and lactate output by the liver. The incorporation of zonation …

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study characterized the safety and pharmacological properties of AVI-005, a novel glycosylated recombinant human interferon-alpha2b produced from the egg whites of chickens transfected with human cDNA.

METHODS: 18 healthy volunteers received single subcutaneous rising doses (0.5, 1.66 or 5 million international units, MIU) of AVI-005. A randomized parallel comparator group of 10 subjects received 5 MIU of unglycosylated IFN-alpha2b (Intron A). The pharmacokinetic parameters t1/2, tmax, Cmax, AUC0-24h, Vd, and clearance were compared between AVI-005 and unglycosylated IFN-alpa2b.

RESULTS: At equipotent doses, AVI-005 had a larger AUC0-24h than the control interferon. Pharmacodynamic markers ofneopterin and beta2-microglobulin for the …

Body Weight Formulation In Asian Elephant, Sumolya Kanchanapangka, Sunisa Supawong, Klinsukon Koedlab, Jirasak Kaewpannarai, Puttipong Khawnual, Padet Tummaruk, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Accurate estimation of body weight is useful for feeding program evaluation, assessing nutritional status and general health, and for accurate dose calculation in medical treatment. However, it is impractical to weigh elephants due to their enormous size and tremendous weight, and also due to the lack of a suitable weighing machine. The objective of the present study was to correlate various body measurements and actual body weight of the elephant in order to formulate a regression model to approximate the body weight of the elephant from body measurements. Seventy-eight Asian elephants (Elephas maximus indicus) comprising 18 males and 60 females, …

Latino Participation In Food Assistance Programs: A Study Conducted For Project Bread, Anny Rivera-Ottenberger, Elaine Werby

Center for Social Policy Publications

Concern with low participation rates of households eligible for the Food Stamp program is shared among many groups focusing on the social and health needs of the low income population. While strides have been made in improving these rates, still both nationally and here in Massachusetts too many families are still food insecure, or worse, still hungry. Project Bread, the leading statewide anti-hunger organization, allocates resources for research, programs, and activities to promote greater utilization of the food stamp and other food assistance programs.

Project Bread through its direct service program provides telephone and Internet information and assistance to potential …

International Enclosure, The Regime Complex, And Intellectual Property Schizophrenia, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

The year 2005 marked the tenth anniversary of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. Since it entered into effect on January 1, 1995, the Agreement has impacted a wide variety of areas, including agriculture, health, the environment, education, culture, competition, free speech, democracy, and the rule of law. Today, intellectual property protection has been considered a major issue in both the domestic and international policy debates, and policymakers have actively explored intellectual property issues in many different international regimes. These regimes range from public health to human rights and from biological diversity to information and communications.
