Effects Of Environmental Conditions And Insect Life Stages On Performance Of Entomopathogenic Nematodes For Suppression Of Plum Curculio, Conotrachelus Nenuphar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), In Northern Utah, Hong Geun Kim
Biology
In a series of field and laboratory experiments, I tested two entomopathogenic nematode species, two nematode concentrations, and three life stages of the economically damaging insect pest, Contrachelus nenuphar, to support the development of a biological control program for this pest in northern Utah. Two entomopathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Steinernema feltiae, were tested for their virulence. The population of H. bacteriophora tested was collected from soil infested with plum curculio in Brigham City, UT in 2002. The S. feltiae population was obtained from a commercial source. In temperature bioassays, the two nematodes species exhibited different thermal ranges. …

Screening Candidate Fungicides For Control Of Chalkbrood Disease In Alfalfa Leafcutting Bees, Megachile Rotundata (F.) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), Craig Huntzinger
Biology
Pollination of alfalfa seed crops is done primarily by managed populations of the alfalfa leafcutting bee, Megachile rotundata (F.). One of the biggest problems associated with managing M. rotundata on a commercial scale is a fungal disease called chalkbrood, caused by Ascosphaera aggregata Skou. The disease infects larvae that have consumed pollen and nectar contaminated with fungal spores. The spores germinate in the bee's gut, spreading hyphae throughout the host and killing the bee. Mortality from chalkbrood is regularly 10% to 35% in the northwestern United States, and infection levels in excess of 50% are not uncommon. As a consequence, …

Social Work Theses
The purpose of the following exploratory study is to examine the interest levels, barriers and motivating factors influencing attendance at informational Parent Group Meetings held for parents of children who are part of the special education preschool program- both the Developmental Learning Program (DLP) and Integrated preschool classroom- in the Cranston Public School System. Existing literature expresses the importance of parent involvement in special education services, some of the barriers to participation, and the importance of periodically evaluating parents’ needs. A Needs Assessment Survey was sent out to approximately 85 families involved in the DLP/Integrated Preschool Program in the Cranston …
Residual Nutrient Removal By A Winter Cover Crop From Broiler Litter Amended Soils, Jennifer Johnson
Residual Nutrient Removal By A Winter Cover Crop From Broiler Litter Amended Soils, Jennifer Johnson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Poultry production throughout Southern Kentucky is becoming a major agricultural enterprise. Rapid spread of the industry has led to many agricultural advances as well as concerns. One primary concerns is the possible nutrient build-up in pasture and cropland as a result of broiler litter application. Studies were conducted at Western Kentucky University using sorghum sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) as a forage to possibly remove excess nutrients. This project led to a consideration of using a cover crop to further remove nutrients from broiler litter amended soils. This study's objective was to assess total nutrient removal by sorghum sudangrass followed …
Relationships Of Body Condition, Blood Glucose And Insulin Concentration Of Grazing Horses, Ashley Montfort
Relationships Of Body Condition, Blood Glucose And Insulin Concentration Of Grazing Horses, Ashley Montfort
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A recent study has reported that blood glucose levels and founder in horses consuming forage/concentrate mixed diets are positively correlated (Pass et al., 1998). Other studies have reported body fat and insulin resistance are also positively correlated in horses and humans (Hoffman et al., 2003; Boshell et al., 1968; DeFonzo et al, 1991; Kahn et al., 2000). Few studies have monitored these relationships in horses consuming forage only diets, even though the incidence of grass founder is quite high in obese horses and ponies Four thin, four moderate, and four obese horses were grouped two mares and two geldings per …

Behavioral Approaches To Weight Control: A Review Of Current Research, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Jessica Gokee-Larose, Rena R. Wing
Publications and Research
Weight management is a salient issue for women. Studies of behavioral, pharmacological and surgical interventions indicate that women comprise the majority of patients presenting for weight-loss treatment. In this review we discuss the health impact of obesity for women, review behavioral treatments for adult overweight and obesity, and address topics of particular relevance for women, including concerns that weight-loss treatment may precipitate the development of eating pathology, as well as time periods of high risk for weight gain such as pregnancy and menopause.

The Relevance Of Offsetting Policy Effects: Covert Distributive Politics In The Conservation Reserve Program , Robert Carey
The Relevance Of Offsetting Policy Effects: Covert Distributive Politics In The Conservation Reserve Program , Robert Carey
All Dissertations
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), as initially authorized by the Food Security Act of 1985, operated by removing land from agricultural production in order to generate environmental benefits, primarily erosion reduction. Policy, however, often generates unintended consequences. One potential unintended consequence in the CRP is slippage; if the upward pressure that the idling of cropland exerts on commodity prices results in the activation of new land, behavior that may partly offset the program's environmental benefits, then price-feedback slippage is said to have occurred. Examination of county-level wheat production data for the United States during the years 1980 to 1993 utilizes …

Characterizing Ntrc-Like Activators Affecting Myxococcus Xanthus Development, Jessica Eisenstatt
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Myxococcus xanthus is a soil bacterium that is a member of a group of organisms known as the myxobacteria. M. xanthus cells live in biofilms and feed on other bacteria to obtain nutrients. During times of inadequate nourishment, M. xanthus cells aggregate, build fruiting bodies, and fruiting body cells differentiate into spores that are highly resistant. In order to form the fruiting bodies, M. xanthus cells must be able to move across solid surfaces. There are two motility systems, the adventurous system (A-motility) and the social system (S-motility), used by M. xanthus cells to navigate across surfaces. The adventurous system …

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Maternal And Cord Blood Plasma., Paula G. Radmacher 1951-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are chemicals generated from the incomplete combustion of organic materials, including tobacco smoke. Some PAH are known to be mutagenic and carcinogenic in humans, and of concern for the fetus when women smoke during pregnancy. Known consequences of smoking during pregnancy include low birth weight and preterm delivery. It is unknown if PAH are related to these outcomes. This pilot study was designed to measure concentrations of 3 PAH (anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene and 1-hydroxypyrene) in paired maternal and cord blood samples as well as any correlations between the two matrices. Plasma cotinine was used as a biomarker …

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Measure Health-Related Socioeconomic Well-Being In Persons With A Cancer Diagnosis., Barbara Anderson Head
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The impact of socioeconomic status on the diagnosis, treatment, survival, and overall quality of life in persons with cancer has been well documented. Yet, many studies overlook the relevance of socioeconomic factors when measuring the impact of cancer care. A multitude of tools exist for the measuring of health-related quality of life (QOL) in oncology, but the majority do not recognize socioeconomic well-being as a relevant domain. The FACT-G, perhaps the most often used measure of QOL in oncology, measures the domains of physical, functional, social/family, and emotional well-being as core measures with optional instruments available to address spiritual well-being …

[Re]Considering The Refugee Camp, Matthew C. Stoub
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Abstract:
Conflict and disaster occurs throughout the world every day. The aftershock of these situations gives rise to millions of stateless persons: refugees. Today, the Camp is virtually synonymous with refugee situations. These institutional establishments are intended as a transitory center for sustaining life until the inhabitants can safely Return home. The tangible reality of these situations is that they become permanent fixtures in the landscape. The current system of warehousing refugees in overpopulated wastelands creates a strong dependence for the victim upon humanitarian aid. The camp is seen as unwanted, parasitic, and as a necessary evil.

The Impact Of A Physical Activity Intervention On The Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Of Preadolescent Females, Katherine Hommel
The Impact Of A Physical Activity Intervention On The Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Of Preadolescent Females, Katherine Hommel
All Theses
Females often do not participate in the recommended level of physical activity on a regular basis possibly leading to both physical and psychological consequences. Reasons for lack of participation include a lack of self-efficacy. Self-efficacy theory proposes that self-efficacy is a key determinant in maintenance, adoption, and perseverance in difficult tasks. Recent literature has supported a relationship between an individual's physical activity self-efficacy and actual behaviors relating to physical activity.
The Finding Your Voice program was aimed at increasing pre-adolescent female's self-efficacy for physical activity through education and practical experience. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the …
