Unemployment, Women, And Taxis: A Study Of The Taxi-Sister Program In Its Test Phase, Mackenzie Israel-Trummel Oct 2007

Unemployment, Women, And Taxis: A Study Of The Taxi-Sister Program In Its Test Phase, Mackenzie Israel-Trummel

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In May of 2007, the Senegalese Ministry for Family and Female Entrepreneurship in collaboration with a private car dealership, Espace-Auto, announced plans for the Taxi-Sister program, which introduced ten women into the taxi driving profession. The first ten women, who hit the streets in September 2007, are considered a test-run for the program, as the Ministry seeks to expand women’s roles in Senegalese society and presence in the economic sector. The program is considered to be both an effort to address women’s poverty and to establish a feminine presence in professions formerly reserved for men.

This study attempts to describe …

Memory, Place And Nation-Building: Remembering In The ‘New’ South Africa, Kate Ronan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this project was to look at memory and memorialization in Cape Town in order to better understand the role of sites of memory and memory initiatives in the making of the ‘new’ South Africa. This study focuses on connections between memory and place and memory and identity. It also looks at the Cape Town landscape, the ways in which it has changed over time and contestations over sites on this landscape. This project was conducted as a social analysis project over the period of one month. Visits to monuments and museums, interviews with people involved in memory …

Leprosy: A Study Of Identity Through A “Marginalized” Population, Aarti Bhatt Oct 2007

Leprosy: A Study Of Identity Through A “Marginalized” Population, Aarti Bhatt

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

People of all different cultures use identity as a way of mediating with surrounding institutional structures and personal communities. Identity however, is not a concrete idea but a multidimensional and dynamic condition. For communities of so called "marginalized people" an identity perceived or created from the outside and imposed can have drastic implications on a person's capacity to act as an agent. Stefen Ecks argues for the value of ethnographic study from the point of view of the marginal people, going on to say that "this is of critical importance since marginality puts health most under stress when it is …

Commentpress: New (Social) Structures For New (Networked) Texts, Kathleen Fitzpatrick

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

On July 25, 2007, the Institute for the Future of the Book released version 1.0 of CommentPress, a theme for WordPress that facilitates the web publication of lengthy documents in a fashion that is both internally and externally networked, and that allows for reader commenting and discussion at a level of granularity ranging from the document as a whole to the individual paragraph. The goal of CommentPress, as the project's "about" page presents, stems from the desire
to see whether a popular net-native publishing form, the blog, which, most would agree, is very good at covering the present moment in …

A Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm That Employs A Hybrid Approach For Isolating Codon Usage Bias Indicative Of Translational Efficiency, Douglas W. Raiford, Dan E. Krane, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer Oct 2007

A Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm That Employs A Hybrid Approach For Isolating Codon Usage Bias Indicative Of Translational Efficiency, Douglas W. Raiford, Dan E. Krane, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer

Kno.e.sis Publications

Isolation of translational efficiency bias can have important applications in gene expression prediction and heterologous protein production. In some genomes the presence of a high GC(AT)-content bias can confound the isolation of translational efficiency bias. In other organisms translational efficiency bias is weak making it difficult to isolate. Described here is a multi-objective genetic algorithm that improves the isolation of translational efficiency bias in Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, two organisms shown to have high GC-content and weak translational efficiency bias.

Swashup: Situational Web Applications Mashups, E. Michael Maximilien, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Stefan Tai

Kno.e.sis Publications

Distributed programming has shifted from private networks to the Internet using heterogeneous Web APIs. This enables the creation of situational applications of composed services exposing user interfaces, i.e., mashups. However, this programmable Web lacks unified models that can facilitate mashup creation, reuse, and deployments. This poster demonstrates a platform to facilitate Web 2.0 mashups.

Review Of Into The Wild, Michael A Anderson Oct 2007

Review Of Into The Wild, Michael A Anderson

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Over ten years have passed since Jon Krakauer first released Into the Wild into print. The book, a National bestseller, is based on a true story and essentially begins where it ends. In the opening paragraph, Krakauer presents the reader with the mysterious and untimely death of 24- year old Chris McCandless in 1992. The young man, who was from a financially stable family, withdrew from his family and greater society, hitchhiked to Alaska, walked alone into the wilderness, and was found dead four months later in an abandoned bus in the Alaskan "bush".

Update On The Children And Nature Movement, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The National Forum on Children and Nature, sponsored by The Conservation Fund, Louv and others, also continues to progress towards its goal of sponsoring national projects which will serve to reconnect kids with nature. Calls for project proposals went out last fall and Forum Advisory Panels are now considering some 500 applications anticipating awarding funding to thirty or so finalists later in 2008. Reviewing those applications is, in itself, cause to celebrate somewhat. It is very encouraging to see the diversity of environmental, outdoor, and recreation education programs that already exist in the USA The Children and Nature movement is …

How Fat Layers Affect The Clinical Diagnosis From Doppler Data, Deirdre King, Carmel Moran, Matt Hussey, Jacinta Browne Oct 2007

How Fat Layers Affect The Clinical Diagnosis From Doppler Data, Deirdre King, Carmel Moran, Matt Hussey, Jacinta Browne

Conference Papers

Ultrasound Doppler data are routinely used in the clinical diagnosis of degree of stenosis in the renal artery. In this study the effect of fat layers on maximum velocity estimations was determined using both a Doppler string and flow phantom. Using an ATL HDI 3000 with two broadband transducers (C4-2 and L12-5), the maximum velocity was estimated for a range of velocities with and without the presence of a fat layer. The results indicate that the introduction of a fat layer has a significant effect on the overestimation of the maximum velocity when the string phantom is used. However, in …

A Functional Analysis Of Televised U.S. Senate And Gubernatorial Campaign Debates, William L. Benoit, Leann Brazeal, David Airne Oct 2007

A Functional Analysis Of Televised U.S. Senate And Gubernatorial Campaign Debates, William L. Benoit, Leann Brazeal, David Airne

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study extended previous research on the Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse to investigate the nature of 21 U.S. Senate campaign debates and 15 gubernatorial debates from 1994 to 2006. Acclaims were more common than attacks or defenses in Senate (56%, 30%, 14%) and gubernatorial (68%, 30%, 2%) debates. Challengers attacked more and acclaimed less than incumbents in both groups of debates. Senate and gubernatorial incumbents used past deeds much more to acclaim than attack; challengers were prone to use past deeds to attack more than acclaim. There was no consistent effect of political party on functions of debates. …

A Longitudinal Study On The Number Of Graduates From U.S. Colleges And University It Programs, Rick Weible Oct 2007

A Longitudinal Study On The Number Of Graduates From U.S. Colleges And University It Programs, Rick Weible

Management Information Systems Faculty Research

This paper examines the graduation rates for all types of degrees earned by students majoring in information technologies at U.S. colleges and universities. The numbers used in this report are based on graduation numbers reported to the U.S. Department of Education. These numbers show a growth in the total number of graduates between 1995 and 2005 from 103,039 to 187,237 with a peak in 2003 of 240,862. There is a sharp decline between 2003 and 2005. This decline can be linked to major events: the burst of the IT bubble and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. And there …

Patterns Of Life: Integrating Mathematics With Science, Culture, And Art, Dian Calkins, James B. Cunningham, Foad Satterfield, Mietek Kolipinski, Sibdas Ghosh

Collected Faculty Scholarship

We offered undergraduate students an interdisciplinary course Patterns of Life that develops mathematical reasoning strategies to solve complex problems. In its most essential form, mathematics is the study of patterns; and mathematical (patterned) reasoning is the ability to think with a plan and a purpose. Students personally experience and use patterns of reasoning in diverse disciplines, and then work in groups to form a valid strategy for solving a selected problem. Patterns of Life is designed as guided, on-site, active-learning experiences, in cooperation with local scientific, cultural and fine arts communities. Course goals for students include: (1) to increase mathematical …

A Proposed Statistical Protocol For The Analysis Of Metabolic Toxicological Data Derived From Nmr Spectroscopy, Benjamin J. Kelly, Paul E. Anderson, Nicholas V. Reo, Nicholas J. Delraso, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer Oct 2007

A Proposed Statistical Protocol For The Analysis Of Metabolic Toxicological Data Derived From Nmr Spectroscopy, Benjamin J. Kelly, Paul E. Anderson, Nicholas V. Reo, Nicholas J. Delraso, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer

Kno.e.sis Publications

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a non-invasive method of acquiring a metabolic profile from biofluids. This metabolic information may provide keys to the early detection of exposure to a toxin. A typical NMR toxicology data set has low sample size and high dimensionality. Thus, traditional pattern recognition techniques are not always feasible. In this paper, we evaluate several common alternatives for isolating these biomarkers. The fold test, unpaired t-test, and paired t-test were performed on an NMR-derived toxicological data set and results were compared. The paired t-test method was preferred, due to its ability to attribute statistical significance, to …

Does Mutual Knowledge Affect Virtual Team Performance? Theoretical Analysis And Anecdotal Evidence, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi Oct 2007

Does Mutual Knowledge Affect Virtual Team Performance? Theoretical Analysis And Anecdotal Evidence, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

This paper describes the concept of mutual knowledge and its potential impact on virtual team performance. Based on an analysis of extant literature, we argue that there is a gap in our understanding of what is known about mutual knowledge as it impacts team dynamics and virtual team performance. Supporting literature, anecdotes, and case studies are used to discuss the importance of mutual knowledge for virtual team performance and the research issues that need to be addressed in the future.
