Do Parents' Literacy Beliefs And Home Literacy Experiences Relate To Children's Literacy Skills?, Rebecca C. Norman Dec 2007

Do Parents' Literacy Beliefs And Home Literacy Experiences Relate To Children's Literacy Skills?, Rebecca C. Norman

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship among parents' literacy beliefs, home literacy experiences, and children's literacy skills. Forty-three children, who attended a university preschool, and their parents participated in the study. Parents' literacy beliefs and the home literacy experience, namely shared book reading, were examined through a self-report questionnaire. One important section of this questionnaire provided information about parents' beliefs concerning literacy acquisition; specifically, whether they believed in a top-down or bottom-up approach. The children were tested individually for emergent literacy skills, including concepts of print, alphabetic knowledge, rhyming skills, oral language skills, word recognition, and invented spelling. The results were …

Balancing Startup Marketing &Sales: Why It's A Tough Management Call, Eugene Fram Dec 2007

Balancing Startup Marketing &Sales: Why It's A Tough Management Call, Eugene Fram

Presentations and other scholarship

All startups have to pass critical milestones to stay on the path to success. Some are obvious: attracting investors...beginning operations...becoming profitable. However, there's one milestone that doesn't command the management attention it needs. I'm talking about balancing marketing and sales, with an emphasis on the word balancing.

Radial Outflow In Teleoperation: A Possible Solution For Improving Depth Perception, Joshua Gomer Dec 2007

Radial Outflow In Teleoperation: A Possible Solution For Improving Depth Perception, Joshua Gomer

All Theses

Practical experience has shown that operators of remote robotic systems have difficulty perceiving aspects of remotely operated robots and their environments (e.g. Casper & Murphy, 2003). Operators often find it difficult, for example, to perceive accurately the distances and sizes of remote objects. Past research has demonstrated that employing a moveable camera that provides the operator optical motion allows for the perception of distance in the absence of other information about depth (Dash, 2004). In this experiment a camera was constrained to move only forward and backward, thus adding monocular radial outflow to the video stream. The ability of remote …

Optical Force Based Cancer Cell Identification, Justin Roman Dec 2007

Optical Force Based Cancer Cell Identification, Justin Roman

All Theses

We present the basis of a novel, non-invasive technique for cell diagnostics which utilizes the optical force generated by a weakly focused laser beam to distinguish cells based on their size, structure, composition, and membrane properties. Cell populations of different types, biological states or with different treatments can be studied. This research focuses on two particular instances where other methods of cell sorting, such as those that require fluorescent markers, are not ideal. What's more, this research emphasizes the ability to sort morphologically similar cells that are identical to the naked eye, but phenotypically different on the molecular level. The …

Reducing Curvature In Complex Tool Paths By Deviating From Cam-Produced Tool Paths Within A Tolerance Band, George Benjamin Naseath Dec 2007

Reducing Curvature In Complex Tool Paths By Deviating From Cam-Produced Tool Paths Within A Tolerance Band, George Benjamin Naseath

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an algorithm to decrease high-curvature sections in tool paths for complex parts to achieve shorter machining times resulting in higher production rates. In the research sample cases, the algorithm decreased machining times by 1% to 9% for design-induced sections of high curvature and by 16% to 75% for CAM induced ripples using high path tolerances. High-curvature sections in tool paths are caused by complex part geometry, noise, and discontinuities in the model. The curvature is decreased by deviating the tool path within an allowable path tolerance. The feedrate along the tool path is directly related to the …

Newcomers To The Nebraska Panhandle: How Do We Keep Them Here?, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel Dec 2007

Newcomers To The Nebraska Panhandle: How Do We Keep Them Here?, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

A lot of media attention over the years has been given to the steady decline of population in rural areas across Nebraska. However, there is another side to this story. Research using the 2000 U.S. Census shows that significant numbers of people do move in and out of rural regions within our state. Unfortunately, very little is really known about the new residents’ motivations for moving to the region, and reasons why they choose to remain or consider leaving their new community.

Perceptions Of Dyspnea, Physical Activity, And Functional Status In Obese Women, Donna Althea Jewell

Dissertations

PURPOSE: King's Theory of Goal Attainment guided this study exploring the physical sensation of dyspnea that obese women feel and how it affects their functioning. BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: Obesity prevalence has doubled since 1980. Current research is investigating how to reduce prevalence and examining obesity's impact on the respiratory system. Little research was found that investigated the impact obesity has on routine activities because of dyspena and function and whether physical activity has a mitigating effect. METHODS: A comparative descriptive research design was used. A survey of dyspnea felt during routine activities was created; IRB approval to survey community-dwelling women …

Nutrition During Gestation And Fetal Programming, K. A. Vonnahme Dec 2007

Nutrition During Gestation And Fetal Programming, K. A. Vonnahme

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Historically, considerable efforts have been made to understand how nutrition impacts health and productivity during the postnatal period. While maternal nutrition during pregnancy plays an essential role in proper fetal and placental development, less is known about how maternal nutrition impacts the health and productivity of the offspring. Indeed, the prenatal growth trajectory is sensitive to the direct and indirect effects of maternal dietary intake from the earliest stages of embryonic life when the nutrient requirements for conceptus growth are negligible (Robinson et al., 1977). Not only is neonatal health compromised, but the subsequent health may be “programmed” as offspring …

I. Basic Principles Used In The “Sandhills Calving System” And How They Apply To Other Production Environments, David R. Smith Dec 2007

I. Basic Principles Used In The “Sandhills Calving System” And How They Apply To Other Production Environments, David R. Smith

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Diarrhea is one of the most likely reasons young beef calves become sick or die.(45) Besides its detriment to calf health and well-being, calf scours is costly to cattle producers due to poor calf performance, death, and the expense of medications and labor to treat sick calves. (3, 41) In addition, catching and treating young calves puts herd owners and their employees at risk of injury, and many producers become disheartened after investing long hours to treat scouring calves during an already exhausting calving season.

Calf scours is a complex disease, with many interrelated causes.(1, 2, 37) Agent, host, and …

The Experience Of Technology Integration By Teacher Educators In Higher Education, Patricia Ann Suess Dec 2007

The Experience Of Technology Integration By Teacher Educators In Higher Education, Patricia Ann Suess

Dissertations

With the advancing use of technology globally, it is becoming essential for K-12 educators to have knowledge of educational technology and its appropriate classroom use. Thus, it is important for higher education faculty involved in the preparation of those K-12 teachers to achieve technology integration in their teacher education programs. It is not sufficient to simply provide computers and peripheral devices to future teachers. The critical issue is the way in which those tools are used to promote student learning. Therefore, it is necessary for faculty in higher education to model the use of technology as a teaching and learning …

Liminal Butlers: Discussing A Comic Stereotype And The Progression Of Class Distinctions In America, Katie Smith Dec 2007

Liminal Butlers: Discussing A Comic Stereotype And The Progression Of Class Distinctions In America, Katie Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will prove how the male domestic servant shows a conservative evolution of class freedom through early American films. As an individual thrust into a liminal sphere, these characters paradoxically become a character type for both keeping class-consciousness as well as breaking up notions of class, albeit in a slow process. In comedy, domestic male servants have always been on duty to help their masters while also becoming sources of mischief as tricksters. In early American films, these characters embody the anxiety of a classless body of men who become scapegoats, trickster-figures, and mask-wearing sages in order to survive—attracting …

A Middle-Ware Level Client Cache For A High Performance Computing I/O Simulator, Michael Bassily Dec 2007

A Middle-Ware Level Client Cache For A High Performance Computing I/O Simulator, Michael Bassily

This thesis describes the design and run time analysis of the system level middle-ware cache for Hecios. Hecios is a high performance cluster I/O simulator. With Hecios, we provide a simulation environment that accurately captures the performance characteristics of all the components in a clusterwide parallel file system. Hecios was specifically modeled after PVFS2. It was designed to be extensible and to easily allow for various component modules to be easily replaced by those that model other system types. Built around the OMNeT++ simulation package, Hecios' inner-cluster communication module is easily adaptable to any TCP/IP based protocol and all standard …

Wafer Probe And Package Test Failure Analysis, Deepa Kalva Dec 2007

Wafer Probe And Package Test Failure Analysis, Deepa Kalva

All Theses

In recent years, NAND flash memory has gained a lot of momentum in the semiconductor industry and has become an ideal choice for many consumer and communication products. One of the key elements in the successful production of NAND flash memory is to incorporate elaborate testing methods to ensure functionality and reliability before the part reaches the customer. This in turn necessitates the evaluation and understanding of different failure mechanisms, and the development of methodologies to correct problems.
In this thesis, failure analysis was performed on NAND flash memory at wafer and package level. This involved massive data collection and …

Importance And Availability Of Content And Communication Skills Among Entry-Level Interpretive Naturalists, Jonathan Ivey Dec 2007

Importance And Availability Of Content And Communication Skills Among Entry-Level Interpretive Naturalists, Jonathan Ivey

All Theses

Interpretation seeks to help visitors to make intellectual and emotional connections between themselves and park resources through a communication process. To accomplish this goal, interpreters must be intimately knowledgeable of park resources as well as excellent communicators. The details of what types of knowledge and communication skills are most important to interpretive naturalists have not been formally documented. Likewise, little is formally known about the availability of each skill in pools of entry-level applicants for interpretive positions. This study documented the varying importance and availability of content and communication skills for entry-level interpretive naturalists, based on the perceptions of experienced …

Interferometric Sensor For Characterizing Material, Aristide Dogariu Dec 2007

Interferometric Sensor For Characterizing Material, Aristide Dogariu

UCF Patents

An integrated optical sensor, using low coherence interferometry, is capable of determining analyte concentration in a material sample based on absorption, scattering and polarization. The sensor includes one or more light collectors, with each collector having a separation distance from the region where the sample is illuminated by the source. The light backscattered from the sample is combined with reference arm light at the same optical path length for each light collector. The intensity of interference may be correlated with the concentration of an analyte in the material, for example the glucose concentration in a turbid medium like skin. The …
