Devaluing Invention: The Push For Patent Reform, Don Tiller
Devaluing Invention: The Push For Patent Reform, Don Tiller
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
Recently, it has been argued that the U.S. patent system is broken and has become a social burden, merely serving to grant unnecessary economic monopolies at the expense of consumers without creating an extra incentive to invent; or worse, that the patent system actually reduces incentive to invent. These critics contend that, in effect, the patent system functions as both a short- and long-run economic burden on society. The result has been a strong effort to reduce the extent of patent rights at both the legislative and judicial branches of government. Some of the proposed reforms, and the policies on …

V Is For Voluntary: Uptake Of Hiv Testing And Counseling In Mombasa District, Kenya, Julie Caplow
V Is For Voluntary: Uptake Of Hiv Testing And Counseling In Mombasa District, Kenya, Julie Caplow
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) is a crucial HIV intervention strategy, promoting safe behavior, providing personalized support, and serving as an entry point for care and treatment. Experts agree that knowledge of HIV status should ideally be universal; however, as VCT is a voluntary service, certain challenges arise in promoting its uptake. Though Kenya has made remarkable headway in expanding its VCT provision, setting a leading example for the world, 80% of adult citizens still have never been tested. This project investigates the factors controlling the uptake of VCT in Mombasa district and seeks ways to reach more people with …
Responsibility, Reconciliation, And Remembrance: Serbian Youth Perspectives In Dealing With The Past, Erica Getto
Responsibility, Reconciliation, And Remembrance: Serbian Youth Perspectives In Dealing With The Past, Erica Getto
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Dealing with the past is a process in which a society determines truthful facts of previous events, and with the support of civil society and its leaders, undergoes a transformation from a culture of conflict to one of peace, through reconciliation and depolarization . Youth between the ages of 18-30 are the future of Serbia. They grew up in the midst of war, under a regime that greatly affected the economical, social, and political stability of the newly independent country. Because of these factors, their perspectives and opinions become critical in determining how this country is approaching topics of the …
The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin
The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Before traveling to Ireland, I watched the film Michael Collins; aside from the single paragraph of text allocated to the 1916 Easter Rising in The Course of Irish History, the film shaped my understanding of the Irish fight for independence. As the semester progressed, this basic understanding evolved into a solid grasp of Irish history and politics. As a student of history with a specific interest in historiography, I aimed to structure my Independent Research Project (ISP) around Irish history so that I could delve deeper into my preferred field. Throughout the semester my intrigue piqued as I noticed how …
Refugees And Migrants From Eritrea To The Arab World: The Cases Of Sudan, Yemen And Saudi Arabia 1991-2007, Hélène Thiollet
Refugees And Migrants From Eritrea To The Arab World: The Cases Of Sudan, Yemen And Saudi Arabia 1991-2007, Hélène Thiollet
Faculty Journal Articles
Since the early 1960s, exiles have been fleeing from Eritrea to neighbouring Sudan, the Arab world, and more recently to the West. The independence war that saw Eritreans rise against the Ethiopian state after the annexation of the former Italian colony in 1962, raged until 1991 and caused massive population displacement. Ongoing violence and poverty created over one million refugees in the 1980s and continuous flows of emigrants until the beginning of the 1990s. Eritrean independence, established in 1993, was expected to put refugees on their way back home. With the outbreak of a new war in 1998 and the …

Usa: A Civilization Of Its Own?, Peter O'Brien

"The object [America] is wholly new in the world. It is singular...Nothing in history is parallel to it."1 -----Edmund Burke
Distinct civilizations can have common origins.2 Byzantine, Western and Islamic civilization each grew its separate way from Judaic and Hellenic roots. In similar fashion, the United States of America may well be in the process of branching off to form a civilization increasingly distinguishable from European civilization. The separation has been gradually but steadily underway since 1776. However, in civilizational time, 240 years represent a rather short period. The division has not yet fully matured. So the precise …

The Rule Of The Jungle In Pakistan: A Case Study On Corruption And Forest Management In Swat, Lorenzo Pellegrini
The Rule Of The Jungle In Pakistan: A Case Study On Corruption And Forest Management In Swat, Lorenzo Pellegrini
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Corruption in the forest sector of Swat, Pakistan is impairing the sustainable management of forest. We analyze corruption in a case study setting against the backdrop of the reform options that are most often cited as possible solutions. As we highlight in this study, the ‘crime and punishment’ approach is not feasibly implemented if the overall institutional environment is weak. Since countrywide overhaul of corruption through sweeping reform programs, the other reform approach, is a difficult and lengthy task, there is a need for an alternative kind of reform. In the case of a corruption-ridden centralised forest management regime, institutional …

Although commonly associated with infection in cattle, bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV) also replicate in many domestic and wildlife species, including cervids. Bovine viral diarrhea viruses have been isolated from a number of cervids, including mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus), but little information is available regarding clinical presentation and progression of infection in these species. In preliminary studies of experimental infection of deer with BVDV, researchers noted seroconversion but no clinical signs. In this study, we infected white-tailed deer fawns that were negative …

The Power Of Social Media: Only The Tip Of The Iceberg?, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Social media is redefining the way people and companies around the world communicate with one another by dissolving geographical and cultural boundaries. Akanksha Goel, newly appointed Editor-in-Chief of Stuff Singapore -- a gadgets and technology lifestyle publication launched in the UK five years ago -- is a final-year marketing and corporate communication student at Singapore Management University. Goel talked to Knowledge@SMU about how social media compels us to rethink culture, and why companies should take advantage of these new channels to grow their businesses.
