Novel In Silico Method For Teaching Cytoarchitecture, Cellular Diversity, And Gene Expression In The Mammalian Brain, Raddy L. Ramos, Phoebe T. Smith, Joshua C. Brumberg

Publications and Research

Neuroanatomy can be a challenging topic for undergraduates, making the development of new methods of instruction an important goal of neuroscience educators. In the present report we describe the utility and versatility of the Allen Brain Atlas as a novel tool for instruction of several important anatomical principles of the mammalian central nervous system. Using this digital database, we detail how instructors of laboratory or lecture-based courses can demonstrate cytoarchitecture, cellular diversity, and gene expression profiles of the brain.

Increased Hemorrhagic Transformation And Altered Infarct Size And Localization After Experimental Stroke In A Rat Model Type 2 Diabetes, Adviye Ergul, Mostafa M. Elgebaly, Mary-Louise Risher, Weiguo Li, Hazem Elewa, Jeffrey A. Switzer, Christiana Hall, Anna Kozak, Susan C. Fagan

Biomedical Sciences

Background: Interruption of flow through of cerebral blood vessels results in acute ischemic stroke. Subsequent breakdown of the blood brain barrier increases cerebral injury by the development of vasogenic edema and secondary hemorrhage known as hemorrhagic transformation (HT). Diabetes is a risk factor for stroke as well as poor outcome of stroke. The current study tested the hypothesis that diabetes-induced changes in the cerebral vasculature increase the risk of HT and augment ischemic injury.

Methods: Diabetic Goto-Kakizaki (GK) or control rats underwent 3 hours of middle cerebral artery occlusion and 21 h reperfusion followed by evaluation of infarct size, hemorrhage …

Cracking Silent Codes: Critical Race Theory And Education Organizing, Celina Su Oct 2007

Cracking Silent Codes: Critical Race Theory And Education Organizing, Celina Su

Publications and Research

Critical race theory (CRT) has moved beyond legal scholarship to critique the ways in which “colorblind” laws and policies perpetuate existing racial inequalities in education policy. While criticisms of CRT have focused on the pessimism and lack of remedies presented, CRT scholars have begun to address issues of praxis. Specifically, communities of color must challenge the dominant narratives of mainstream institutions with alternative visions of pedagogy and school reform, and community organizing plays an important role in helping communities of color to articulate these alternative counter-narratives. Yet, many in education organizing disagree with CRT's critique of colorblindness. Drawing on five …

Making The Case For Global Engineering: Building Foreign Language Collaborations For Designing, Implementing, And Assessing Programs , Beate I. Allert, Dianne L. Atkinson, Eckhard A. Groll, E. Dan Hirleman Oct 2007

Making The Case For Global Engineering: Building Foreign Language Collaborations For Designing, Implementing, And Assessing Programs , Beate I. Allert, Dianne L. Atkinson, Eckhard A. Groll, E. Dan Hirleman

Online Journal for Global Engineering Education

Engineering programs must prepare students for a global engineering profession. In global markets, processes as well as products can be outsourced. Highly technical engineering work may be completed by large and diverse collaborations. Engineering students need to have foundational work in languages, cultural differences, and strategies for working with diverse colleagues. Historically only about 3% to 4% of engineering students pursue study abroad opportunities. Clearly, new and innovative programs must be devised to build "global competency" in undergraduate engineers. In working toward that end, the authors suggest that interdisciplinary collaborations between departments of foreign language and schools of engineering can …
