Development And Optimization Of A Reconfigurable Telemetry System For Sounding Rocket Payloads, Niladri Si Dec 2007

Development And Optimization Of A Reconfigurable Telemetry System For Sounding Rocket Payloads, Niladri Si

Engineering

This thesis addresses the development of a flight-ready telemetry encoder for the Alaska Student Rocket Project (ASRP) sounding rocket payload. The Frame Oriented eXpandable Integrated circuit Encoder-2007 (FOXIE-07) was developed to resolve crosstalk, timing, and thermal issues in the original FOXIE-03 encoder prototype. A pre-modulation low-pass filter was implemented between the encoder and the FM transmitter to minimize undesired sidebands from the transmitted signal. Complete testing of the FOXIE-07 encoder and pre-modulation filter was performed to certify them as flight-ready components for the SRP5 payload launch from Poker Flat Research Range in 2009.

Chemical And Microbial Characterization Of North Slope Viscous Oils For Meor Application, Ashish L. Ghotekar Dec 2007

Chemical And Microbial Characterization Of North Slope Viscous Oils For Meor Application, Ashish L. Ghotekar

Engineering

Viscous oil reservoirs tend to be low-energy, low-gas/oil-ratio systems with high viscosities and are difficult to produce, transport and refine by conventional methods. Some of the commonly considered viscous oil recovery methods include processes such as steam flooding, in-situ combustion and miscible gas injection. The large viscous oil deposits in the ANS cannot be produced entirely by conventional methods like pressure displacement or waterflooding. Other methods such as miscible (gas injection and water alternating gas (WAG) also have limited success. Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is one of the techniques for improving the oil recovery for viscous deposits. This method …

Experimental Investigation Of Low Salinity Enhanced Oil Recovery Potential And Wettability Characterization Of Alaska North Slope Cores, Shivkumar B. Patil Dec 2007

Experimental Investigation Of Low Salinity Enhanced Oil Recovery Potential And Wettability Characterization Of Alaska North Slope Cores, Shivkumar B. Patil

Engineering

Rock wettability and the chemical properties of the injection water influence fluid distribution and multiphase fluid flow behavior in petroleum reservoirs and hence it consequently affects the final residual oil saturation. Many researchers have proven that oil recovery is increased by decreasing the salinity of water used for waterflooding process. Three sets of experiments were conducted on representative Alaska North Slope (ANS) core samples to experimentally ascertain the influence of injected brine/fluid composition on wettability and hence on oil recovery in secondary oil recovery mode. All the sets of experiments examined the effect of brine salinity variation on wettability and …

Direct Inhibition Of Cdk9 Blocks Hiv-1 Replication Without Preventing T Cell Activation In Primary Human Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes, Dominic Salerno, Muneer G Hasham, Renee Marshall Demarest, Judit Garriga, Alexander Y Tsygankov, Xavier Graña Dec 2007

Direct Inhibition Of Cdk9 Blocks Hiv-1 Replication Without Preventing T Cell Activation In Primary Human Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes, Dominic Salerno, Muneer G Hasham, Renee Marshall Demarest, Judit Garriga, Alexander Y Tsygankov, Xavier Graña

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

HIV-1 transcription is essential for the virus replication cycle. HIV-1 Tat is a viral transactivator that strongly stimulates the processivity of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) via recruitment of the cyclin T1/CDK9 positive transcription elongation factor, which phosphorylates the C-terminal domain (CTD) of RNAPII. Consistently, HIV-1 replication in transformed cells is very sensitive to direct CDK9 inhibition. Thus, CDK9 could be a potential target for anti-HIV-1 therapy. A clearer understanding of the requirements for CDK9 activity in primary human T cells is needed to assess whether the CDK9-dependent step in HIV-1 transcription can be targeted clinically. We have investigated the effects …

Increasing The Efficiency Of Network Interface Card, Amit Uppal Dec 2007

Increasing The Efficiency Of Network Interface Card, Amit Uppal

Theses and Dissertations

A Network Interface Card (NIC) is used for receiving the packets, processing the packets, passing the packets to the host processor, and sending the packets to other computers in a network. NIC uses the buffer management algorithm to distribute the buffer space among different applications. An application may use User Datagram Protocol (UDP) or Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), depending upon the type of application. Buffer Management Algorithm for UDP-based applications may be completely different from the one for TCP applications, since in UDP- based applications receiver do not send acknowledgement back to the sender. This thesis proposes two buffer management …

Development Of Bio-Photonic Sensor Based On Laser-Induced Fluorescence, Chan Kyu Kim Dec 2007

Development Of Bio-Photonic Sensor Based On Laser-Induced Fluorescence, Chan Kyu Kim

Theses and Dissertations

Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) has been shown to be potentially useful for identifying microorganisms in real time. It is a selective and sensitive technique because the excitation is performed at one wavelength while the emission is monitored at longer wavelengths so that background from the excitation source can be eliminated. This specialized optical property of LIF can be applied to development of an optical sensor capable of quickly, non-invasively, and quantitatively probing complex biochemical transformations in microorganisms. Various bio-photonic optical fiber sensors based on laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy were developed as diagnostic tools for microorganisms. In the first phase, the enhancement …

A Periodic Technique For Measuring Thermal Properties Of Thin Samples, Garrett May Dec 2007

A Periodic Technique For Measuring Thermal Properties Of Thin Samples, Garrett May

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We present a periodic technique for measuring the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of thin samples simultaneously. In samples of this type, temperature measurements must be made across the sample faces and are therefore subject to large error due to the interface resistance between the temperature sensor and the sample. The technique uses measurements of the amplitude and phase of the periodic temperature across both a reference sample and the unknown material at several different frequencies. Modeling of the heat flow in the sample allows the simultaneous determination of the thermal parameters of the sample as well as the interface resistance. …

On The Determination Of Building Footprints From Lidar Data, Henry C. George Dec 2007

On The Determination Of Building Footprints From Lidar Data, Henry C. George

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A new approach to improve the determination of building boundaries through automatic processing of light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data is presented. The LIDAR data is processed and interpolated into a grayscale image of intensity values corresponding to height measurements. Ground measurements are separated from non-ground measurements by using a progressive morphological filter. With these measurements now distinct, further separation of non-ground measurements into building and non-building measurements is performed by growing regions with similar characteristics. These building areas are then refined, resulting in a ground plan representation of building boundaries, known as building footprints. Several algorithms are then implemented …

Long-term omni-directional ambient noise was collected at several sites in the Gulf of Mexico during 2004 and 2005. The Naval Oceanographic Office deployed bottom moored Environmental Acoustic Recording System (EARS) buoys approximately 159 nautical miles south of Panama City, Florida, in water depths of 3200 meters. The hydrophone of each buoy was 265 meters above the bottom. The data duration ranged from 10-14 months. The buoys were located near a major shipping lane, with an estimated 1.5 to 4.5 ships per day passing nearby. The data were sampled at 2500 Hz and have a bandwidth of 10-1000 Hz. Data are …

Short And Long-Term Changes In The Fish Assemblages Of Bayou Lacombe, Louisiana, Jeffrey M. Van Vrancken Dec 2007

Short And Long-Term Changes In The Fish Assemblages Of Bayou Lacombe, Louisiana, Jeffrey M. Van Vrancken

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Over the past thirty-five years, anthropogenic disturbances around Bayou Lacombe have altered its fish assemblage. In 2005, the impact of Hurricane Katrina on southeast Louisiana presented me with a unique opportunity to explore the effects of a catastrophic storm on the Bayou. I explored the effects of natural and human disturbances on the Bayou's fish assemblage by electrofishing six historically sampled stations. My research goals were to determine: 1) which Bayou Lacombe fish assemblages were most resilient to the multiple effects of Hurricane Katrina, 2) if there were significant differences in the Bayou's fish assemblages over the past 35 years …

Feasibility Of The Use Of Two Spent Blast Materials As Aggregate In Hot Mix Asphalt In Louisiana Post-Katrina, Amer Kholoqui Khanfar Dec 2007

Feasibility Of The Use Of Two Spent Blast Materials As Aggregate In Hot Mix Asphalt In Louisiana Post-Katrina, Amer Kholoqui Khanfar

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Using spent abrasive blast material (ABM) in hot mix asphalt to replace part of the fine aggregates used in the production of conventional hot mix asphalt has several environmental benefits. First, onsite storage of spent ABMs negatively impact neighboring properties because the fine materials are a source of airborne debris and dust. Use of tarps as curtains only reduces this hazard. Secondly, storage piles of this waste are situated near canals, waterways and the Mississippi River. Future storms may carry these waste products into the neighboring waterways. Most importantly, these wastes are ultimately disposed of in non-hazardous landfills. Reuse of …

Sugar Hill: Architectural, Cultural And Historic Significance Of An Early Twentieth Century African American Neighborhood In New Orleans, Louisiana, Niala Lynn Howard Dec 2007

Sugar Hill: Architectural, Cultural And Historic Significance Of An Early Twentieth Century African American Neighborhood In New Orleans, Louisiana, Niala Lynn Howard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Across the United States, efforts are being made to document African American history and its contribution to the development of this country. At all levels of government and through individual research, attempts are being made to recognize and pay tribute to the role of the Black American. These efforts involve documenting the architectural, cultural, historical, scientific, and social contributions. In New Orleans, the Black American played a major role in the development of the city. For most of the 20th century, African Americans have been the majority of the population. However, little has been done to document their rich architectural …

Microstructural Investigations Of The Layered Cathode Materials Licoo2 And Lini1/3mn1/3co1/3o2, Tanghong Yi Dec 2007

Microstructural Investigations Of The Layered Cathode Materials Licoo2 And Lini1/3mn1/3co1/3o2, Tanghong Yi

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Both LiCoO2 and LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 layered cathode materials are investigated in our studies. P3 phase of CoO2, the end member of the LixCoO2, is found in both chemically and electrochemically delithiated materials. Delithiated LixCoO2 specimens decompose into fine Co3O4 and LiCoO2 particles starting at around 200 °C. This decomposing reaction is proved by in-situ X-ray diffraction and in-situ transmission electron microscopy investigations. The structures of pristine and cycled LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 are investigated by electron diffraction. Single and polycrystalline crystals are found in this material. The partial substitution of Co by Ni and Mn in LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 opens up the possibility of different cation …

An Investigation Of Factors Identified By Novice Teachers That Influence Performance On Standardized Assessments And Teacher Performance, Donna Odom Lacaze Dec 2007

An Investigation Of Factors Identified By Novice Teachers That Influence Performance On Standardized Assessments And Teacher Performance, Donna Odom Lacaze

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Entry in the teaching profession is often dependent on a number of steps or phases involving standardized assessments and performance assessments. The relationships between and among the variables incorporated in such instruments are typically assumed, but not necessarily substantiated. Furthermore, the relationships between the variables assessed and factors involved in teacher preparation have not been investigated. This study was designed to investigate the nature of such relationships in one particular case. In the spring of 1997, the Louisiana legislature changed the Louisiana Teacher Assessment Program to create the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program (LaTAAP). LaTAAP is a uniform statewide …
