Four Greco-Roman Era Temples Of Near Eastern Fertility Goddesses: An Analysis Of Architectural Tradition, K. Michelle Wimber Nov 2007

Four Greco-Roman Era Temples Of Near Eastern Fertility Goddesses: An Analysis Of Architectural Tradition, K. Michelle Wimber

Theses and Dissertations

Lucian, writing in the mid-second century AD, recorded his observations of an "exotic" local cult in the city of Hierapolis in what is today Northern Syria. The local goddess was known as Dea Syria to the Romans and Atargatis to the Greeks. Lucian's so-named De Dea Syria is an important record of life and religion in Roman Syria. De Dea Syria presents to us an Oriental cult of a fertility goddess as seen through the eyes of a Hellenized Syrian devotee and religious ethnographer. How accurate Lucian's portrayal of the cult is questionable, though his account provides for us some …

Attenuation Of Ruminal Methanogenesis, Eric J. Behlke Nov 2007

Attenuation Of Ruminal Methanogenesis, Eric J. Behlke

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Ruminal methanogens reduce carbon dioxide to methane (CH4), thereby preventing hydrogen use by bacteria for VFA synthesis resulting in a 2 to 12% loss in feed gross energy. Methane is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. The objectives of this work were to determine: 1) the extent to which ruminal cultures acquire resistance to a nitrofuranyl derivative of para-aminobenzoate (NFP) and an extract from the plant Yucca shidigera (Yucca); 2) the effect of distillers dried grains plus solubles (DDGS) on ruminal CH4 production; 3) the effect of brome hay-based diets, corn-based diets, and in vivo …

Baicalein Inhibits Il-1Β- And Tnf-Α-Induced Inflammatory Cytokine Production From Human Mast Cells Via Regulation Of The Nf-Κb Pathway, Chia Jung Hsieh, Kenton Hall, Tuanzhu Ha, Chuanfu Li, Guha Krishnaswamy, David S. Chi

ETSU Faculty Works

Background: Human mast cells are multifunctional cells capable of a wide variety of inflammatory responses. Baicalein (BAI), isolated from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi), has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. We examined its effects and mechanisms on the expression of inflammatory cytokines in an IL-1β- and TNF-α-activated human mast cell line, HMC-1. Methods: HMC-1 cells were stimulated either with IL-1β (10 ng/ml) or TNF-α (100 U/ml) in the presence or absence of BAI. We assessed the expression of IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 by ELISA and RT-PCR, NF-κB activation by electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA), and …

The Gratification Niches Of Internet Social Networking, E-Mail, And Face-To-Face Communication, Robert Scott Nyland Nov 2007

The Gratification Niches Of Internet Social Networking, E-Mail, And Face-To-Face Communication, Robert Scott Nyland

Theses and Dissertations

Internet social networking sites have been the source of much speculation and controversy in the few years that they have been in existence. These sites (the most popular being MySpace and Facebook) allow their users to create online profiles, with which they can post pictures of themselves and interact with other users via text-based messaging. These sites are especially popular among teens and young adults, many of whom find their lives controlled by these sites. Utilizing the Uses and Gratificatioons approach in combination with the theory of the niche, the aim of this study is to understand the gratifications that …

Low Loss Hybrid Waveguide Electric Field Sensor Based On Optical D-Fiber, Eric K. Johnson Nov 2007

Low Loss Hybrid Waveguide Electric Field Sensor Based On Optical D-Fiber, Eric K. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the fabrication of a low loss hybrid waveguide electric field(E-field) sensor based on optical D-fiber. This novel E-field sensor is formed as part of a contiguous fiber resulting in a flexible and small cross-section device that can be embedded into electronic circuitry. The in-fiber nature of this sensor also eliminates the need for alignment and packaging that conventional sensors need. An optical fiber can detect electric fields when the core of the fiber is partially removed and replaced with an electro-optic polymer. This polymer causes a change in the index of refraction in the waveguide of the …

Space-Time Coding With Offset Modulations, N. Thomas Nelson Nov 2007

Space-Time Coding With Offset Modulations, N. Thomas Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation it is shown that the telemetry versions of Feher-patented QPSK (FQPSK-JR) and shaped offset QPSK (SOQPSK-TG) can be interpreted as both cross-correlated, trellis-coded quadrature modulation (XTCQM) and continuous phase modulation (CPM). Based on these representations, both modulations can be detected with near optimal bit error rate performance using a common detector that is formulated as either an XTCQM detector, a traditional CPM detector, or a pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) detector (due to the PAM decomposition of the CPM representations of these modulations). In addition it is shown that the complexity of the XTCQM detector for SOQPSK-TG can …

Seleksi Dan Pengujian Aktivitas Enzim L-Histidine Decarboxylase Dari Bakteri Pembentuk Histamin, Wibowo Mangunwardoyo, Romauli Aya Sophia, Endang Sri Heruwati Nov 2007

Seleksi Dan Pengujian Aktivitas Enzim L-Histidine Decarboxylase Dari Bakteri Pembentuk Histamin, Wibowo Mangunwardoyo, Romauli Aya Sophia, Endang Sri Heruwati

Makara Journal of Science

Selection and test of L-histidine decarboxylase enzyme activity of six isolates of histamine forming bacteria. Six isolates of histamine forming bacteria were screened to see the degree of ability in producing histamine on modified Niven’s medium. The result showed that the six bacteria were able to produce histamine by giving a pinkish color on the medium, which could be used as a preliminary identification of histamine-forming bacteria (HFB). The isolates were grown in liquid modified Niven medium to measure the production of histamine. The histamine produced were determined by Hardy and Smith method. The result showed that all of the …

Hydrocarbon Degrading Bacteria: Isolation And Identification, Lies Indah Indah Nov 2007

Hydrocarbon Degrading Bacteria: Isolation And Identification, Lies Indah Indah

Makara Journal of Science

There is little information how to identify hydrocarbon degrading bacteria for bioremediation of marine oil spills. We have used gravel which contaminated oil mousse from Beach Simulator Tank, in Marine Biotechnology Institute, Kamaishi, Japan, and grown on enrichment culture. Biostimulation with nutrients (N and P) was done to analyze biodegradation of hydrocarbon compounds: Naphthalene, Phenanthrene, Trichlorodibenzofuran and Benzo[a]pyrene. Community of bacteria from enrichment culture was determined by DGGE. Isolating and screening the bacteria on inorganic medium contain hydrocarbon compounds and determination of bacteria by DAPI (number of cells) and CFU. DNA was extracted from colonies of bacteria and sequence determination …

Pengaruh Penambahan Urasil Dalam Media Fermentasi Terhadap Hasil Β-Glukan Dari Dua Galur Agrobacterium, Kusmiati Kusmiati, Swasono R. Tamat, Sukma Nuswantara, Salmah Muhamad Nov 2007

Pengaruh Penambahan Urasil Dalam Media Fermentasi Terhadap Hasil Β-Glukan Dari Dua Galur Agrobacterium, Kusmiati Kusmiati, Swasono R. Tamat, Sukma Nuswantara, Salmah Muhamad

Makara Journal of Science

Influence of Uracil in Fermentation Media on β-Glucan Production by Agrobacterium Radiobacter A 1.5 and Agrobacterium sp. Bro 1.2.1. Optimum β-glucan production can be achieved by an optimum condition in the fermentation media. Uracil, as a precursor of UDP-glucose, may act as a glucose donor in the formation of polysaccharides such as β-glucan. It is expected that addition of certain quantity of uracil into the fermentation media in a suitable growth phase of Agrobacterium radiobacter A 1.5 and Agrobacterium sp. Bro 1.2.1, will significantly increase the β-glucan production. In this investigation, 0.025%; 0.05% or 0.1% of uracil were added into …
