Finite Element Modeling Of Soft Tissue Deformation., Hongjian Shi Dec 2007

Finite Element Modeling Of Soft Tissue Deformation., Hongjian Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computer-aided minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has progressed significantly in the last decade and it has great potential in surgical planning and operations. To limit the damage to nearby healthy tissue, accurate modeling is required of the mechanical behavior of a target soft tissue subject to surgical manipulations. Therefore, the study of soft tissue deformations is important for computer-aided (MIS) in surgical planning and operation, or in developing surgical simulation tools or systems. The image acquisition facilities are also important for prediction accuracy. This dissertation addresses partial differential and integral equations (PDIE) based biomechanical modeling of soft tissue deformations incorporating the …

This study addressed the job satisfaction of new teachers in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The JCPS district is the 29th largest in the United Sates and serves over 98,000 students. Understanding what contributes to the satisfaction and retention of new teachers in a large urban school district has implications for cost effective human resource management and student achievement. The researcher mailed a district-wide survey questionnaire about new teacher job satisfaction using procedures developed by Dillman (2000). The survey mailing yielded a sample of 630 participants. The researcher computed: (a) descriptive statistics, (b) principal components factor …

Optimal Allocation Of Trucking Workload At Ge Consumer And Industrial., Xu Yang 1983- Dec 2007

Optimal Allocation Of Trucking Workload At Ge Consumer And Industrial., Xu Yang 1983-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Consumer and Industrial group of the General Electric Company (GE) allocates its shipping truckload to seventeen different trucking companies over 701 different routes from each of its nine terminals to 48 contiguous states. One of the seventeen trucking companies is its wholly owned subsidiary, which is PDCO. All of the others are contract-based trucking companies. GE Consumer and Industrial managers realized that they were not allocating the entire trucking capacity in an optimal fashion to the seventeen trucking companies, and the spreadsheet-based analytical tool used on a daily basis could not generate an optimal or near optimal solution. They …

Eigenvector-Based Multidimensional Frequency Estimation : Identifiability, Performance, And Applications., Jun Liu Dec 2007

Eigenvector-Based Multidimensional Frequency Estimation : Identifiability, Performance, And Applications., Jun Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multidimensional frequency estimation is a classic signal processing problem that has versatile applications in sensor array processing and wireless communications. Eigenvalue-based two-dimensional (2-D) and N -dimensional ( N -D) frequency estimation algorithms have been well documented, however, these algorithms suffer from limited identifiability and demanding computations. This dissertation develops a framework on eigenvector-based N -D frequency estimation, which contains several novel algorithms that estimate a structural matrix from eigenvectors and then resolve the N -D frequencies by dividing the elements of the structural matrix. Compared to the existing eigenvalue-based algorithms, these eigenvector-based algorithms can achieve automatic pairing without an extra …

The Effects Of Transition Intervention On Students With Mild Disabilities., Yvonne Anton Kelley Niemann 1939- Dec 2007

The Effects Of Transition Intervention On Students With Mild Disabilities., Yvonne Anton Kelley Niemann 1939-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of transition from high school to adult life is particularly important for students with mild disabilities because these students show a pattern of overwhelmingly low expectations and progress. Transition services, self-determination, and focus on outcomes are essential to improve success. Curriculum designed around the interests and abilities of the student, with assistance to meet goals through a coordinated set of activities, academics, work experiences, and personal insight is essential. The STEP Grant supported students with mild disabilities in collaboration with the University of Louisville and a metropolitan school district in Kentucky. Helping students obtain their high school diplomas …

Optimization Modeling For The Operation Of Closed-Loop Supply Chains., Aman Gupta 1978- Dec 2007

Optimization Modeling For The Operation Of Closed-Loop Supply Chains., Aman Gupta 1978-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Environmentally conscious manufacturing and remanufacturing/recycling of endof- life products are steadily growing in importance. The problem of managing the waste generated due to the disposal of many types of products has many aspects. The main driving forces for solving this growing problem are the rapid diminishment of raw material resources, decreasing space in landfills and increasing levels of pollution. The drivers associated with these forces are governmental regulations which require that the manufacturers take back the end-of-life products and customer perspectives on environmental issues. This research considers the problem of increasing levels of electronic and electrical equipments waste. The implementation …

Dismantling The Master's House : Deconstructing The Roots Of Antiblack Racism And The Construction Of The "Other" In Judaism, Christianity And Islam., John Chenault Dec 2007

Dismantling The Master's House : Deconstructing The Roots Of Antiblack Racism And The Construction Of The "Other" In Judaism, Christianity And Islam., John Chenault

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This critical inquiry into the social constructions of "black" and "white" identities analyzes the roles of the three "western" monotheisms (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) in the cognitive and sociohistorical developments of racial slavery and antiblack racism. Specifically, it investigates the sociohistorical consequences of the inherent dualisms of the "western" monotheisms and how those dualisms are expressed in the production of social theories and systems that rely on believer/non-believer oppositions and binaries defined by a Manichaean view of the universe and a teleological conception of history that fosters and sustains an eternal holy war against infidels. What emerges from this analysis …

André Jeunet : Expanded Educational Opportunities For A Photographic Exhibition., Brian J. Davis 1958- Dec 2007

André Jeunet : Expanded Educational Opportunities For A Photographic Exhibition., Brian J. Davis 1958-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In spring 2006, the Frazier International History Museum, in conjunction with the Ekstrom Library Photographic Archives at the University of Louisville, mounted an exhibit of 47 photographs taken by a young French foot soldier during World War I. The exhibit, titled "André Jeunet: Images of WWI by a Pacifist Soldier," ran from May 19 through September 4, 2006. The main concept behind the exhibit was to show images of World War I that focused less on the horrific aspects of combat and more of the everyday life the of common soldier, and to highlight that although many soldiers fought out …

Spiral Disk Opacity From Occulting Galaxy Pairs In The Sloan Digital Sky Survey., Benne W. Holwerda, W. C. Keel, A. Bolton Dec 2007

Spiral Disk Opacity From Occulting Galaxy Pairs In The Sloan Digital Sky Survey., Benne W. Holwerda, W. C. Keel, A. Bolton

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

A spiral galaxy partially overlapping a more distant elliptical offers a unique opportunity to measure the dust extinction in the foreground spiral. From the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR4 spectroscopic sample, we selected 83 occulting galaxy pairs and measured disk opacity over the redshift range z ¼ 0:0Y0:2 with the goal of determining the recent evolution of disk dust opacity. The enrichment of the ISM changes over the lifetime of a disk, and it is reasonable to expect the dust extinction properties of spiral disks as a whole to change over their lifetime. When they do, the change will …

Histopathological Assessment And Comparison Sedimentation And Phosphate Stress On The Staghorn Coral, Acropora Cervicornis, Erin Christine Hodel Dec 2007

Histopathological Assessment And Comparison Sedimentation And Phosphate Stress On The Staghorn Coral, Acropora Cervicornis, Erin Christine Hodel

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Traditional coral reef monitoring efforts lack assessment of coral health at tissue and cellular levels. This thesis investigated tissue, cellular, and gross morphological responses of the Caribbean staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, to elevated sedimentation and phosphate using state-of-the-art histological techniques. Branch fragments of A. cervicornis were collected offshore Broward County, FL, acclimated for 12 weeks, subjected to a 4-week experimental period, and given a 1-week recovery period in laboratory aquaria. Treatments consisted of high doses (200 mg cm-2 day-1) of sedimentation (S), phosphate (4 μM) (P), and a combination of these two (S + P), in …

Generalized Multiagent Learning With Performance Bound, Bikramjit Banerjee, Jing Peng Dec 2007

Generalized Multiagent Learning With Performance Bound, Bikramjit Banerjee, Jing Peng

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present new Multiagent learning (MAL) algorithms with the general philosophy of policy convergence against some classes of opponents but otherwise ensuring high payoffs. We consider a 3-class breakdown of opponent types: (eventually) stationary, self-play and "other" (see Definition 4) agents. We start with ReDVaLeR that can satisfy policy convergence against the first two types and no-regret against the third, but it needs to know the type of the opponents. This serves as a baseline to delineate the difficulty of achieving these goals. We show that a simple modification on ReDVaLeR yields a new algorithm, RV σ(t), that achieves no-regret …

Weighted Additive Criterion For Linear Dimension Reduction, Jing Peng, Stefan Robila Dec 2007

Weighted Additive Criterion For Linear Dimension Reduction, Jing Peng, Stefan Robila

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for dimension reduction has been applied to a wide variety of face recognition tasks. However, it has two major problems. First, it suffers from the small sample size problem when dimensionality is greater than the sample size. Second, it creates subspaces that favor well separated classes over those that are not. In this paper, we propose a simple weighted criterion for linear dimension reduction that addresses the above two problems associated with LDA. In addition, there are well established numerical procedures such as semi-definite programming for efficiently computing the proposed criterion. We demonstrate the efficacy of …

Sybil Attack Detection In A Hierarchical Sensor Network, Jian Yin, Sanjay Kumar Madria Dec 2007

Sybil Attack Detection In A Hierarchical Sensor Network, Jian Yin, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Sybil attack is a particularly harmful threat to sensor networks where a single sensor node illegitimately claims multiple identities. a malicious node may generate an arbitrary number of additional node identities using only one physical device. the Sybil attack can disrupt normal functioning of the sensor network, such as the multipath routing, used to explore the multiple disjoint paths between source-destination pairs. But the Sybil attack can disrupt it when a single adversary presents multiple identities, which appear on the multiple paths. Digital certificates are a way to prove identities, but they are not suitable for the sensor network …

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr. Dec 2007

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

When I first started teaching, creating an exam for my upper division courses was a genuinely exciting process. The material felt fresh and relatively unexplored (at least by me), and I remember often feeling pleasantly overwhelmed with what seemed like a vast supply of intriguing and engrossing exam-ready problems. Crafting the perfect exam, one that was noticeably inviting, exceedingly fair, and unavoidably illuminating, was a real joy.
