Practical Elimination Of Near-Duplicates From Web Video Search, Xiao Wu, Alexander G. Hauptmann, Chong-Wah Ngo Sep 2007

Practical Elimination Of Near-Duplicates From Web Video Search, Xiao Wu, Alexander G. Hauptmann, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Current web video search results rely exclusively on text keywords or user-supplied tags. A search on typical popular video often returns many duplicate and near-duplicate videos in the top results. This paper outlines ways to cluster and filter out the nearduplicate video using a hierarchical approach. Initial triage is performed using fast signatures derived from color histograms. Only when a video cannot be clearly classified as novel or nearduplicate using global signatures, we apply a more expensive local feature based near-duplicate detection which provides very accurate duplicate analysis through more costly computation. The results of 24 queries in a data …

Rushes Video Summarization By Object And Event Understanding, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo Sep 2007

Rushes Video Summarization By Object And Event Understanding, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper explores a variety of visual and audio analysis techniques in selecting the most representative video clips for rushes summarization at TRECVID 2007. These techniques include object detection, camera motion estimation, keypoint matching and tracking, audio classification and speech recognition. Our system is composed of two major steps. First, based on video structuring, we filter undesirable shots and minimize the inter-shot redundancy by repetitive shot detection. Second, a representability measure is proposed to model the presence of objects and four audio-visual events: motion activity of objects, camera motion, scene changes, and speech content, in a video clip. The video …

Context-Based Detection Of Clone-Related Bugs, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su, Edwin Chiu Sep 2007

Context-Based Detection Of Clone-Related Bugs, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su, Edwin Chiu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Studies show that programs contain much similar code, commonly known as clones. One of the main reasons for introducing clones is programmers' tendency to copy and paste code to quickly duplicate functionality. We commonly believe that clones can make programs difficult to maintain and introduce subtle bugs. Although much research has proposed techniques for detecting and removing clones to improve software maintainability, little has considered how to detect latent bugs introduced by clones. In this paper, we introduce a general notion of context-based inconsistencies among clones and develop an efficient algorithm to detect such inconsistencies for locating bugs. We have …

Column Heterogeneity As A Measure Of Data Quality, Bing Tian Dai, Nick Koudas, Beng Chin Ooi, Divesh Srivastava, Suresh Venkatasubramanian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data quality is a serious concern in every data management application, and a variety of quality measures have been proposed, including accuracy, freshness and completeness, to capture the common sources of data quality degradation. We identify and focus attention on a novel measure, column heterogeneity, that seeks to quantify the data quality problems that can arise when merging data from different sources. We identify desiderata that a column heterogeneity measure should intuitively satisfy, and discuss a promising direction of research to quantify database column heterogeneity based on using a novel combination of cluster entropy and soft clustering. Finally, we present …

Taking Stock Of The Creative Commons Experiment: Monitoring The Use Of Creative Commons Licenses And Evaluating Its Implications For The Future Of Creative Commons And For Copyright Law, Giorgos Cheliotis, Kam Wai, Warren Bartholomew Chik, Ankit Guglani, Giri Kumar Tayi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We provide an analysis of the use of Creative Commons (CC) licenses, an approach to licensing creative works which has become very popular among authors who wish to promote more liberal sharing and use of their work. We provide data demonstrating the popularity of CC, examine which specific license types within the CC framework are most popular, and then identify contributing factors for the relative popularity of some of the license types.

Robust Local Search And Its Application To Generating Robust Schedules, Hoong Chuin Lau, Fei Xiao, Thomas Ou Sep 2007

Robust Local Search And Its Application To Generating Robust Schedules, Hoong Chuin Lau, Fei Xiao, Thomas Ou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose an extended local search framework to solve combinatorial optimization problems with data uncertainty. Our approach represents a major departure from scenario-based or stochastic programming approaches often used to tackle uncertainty. Given a value 0 < ? 1, we are interested to know what the robust objective value is, i.e. the optimal value if we allow an chance of not meeting it, assuming that certain data values are defined on bounded random variables. We show how a standard local search or metaheuristic routine can be extended to efficiently construct a decision rule with such guarantee, albeit heuristically. We demonstrate its practical applicability on the Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem with minimal and maximal time lags (RCPSP/max) taking into consideration activity duration uncertainty. Experiments show that, partial order schedules can be constructed that are robust in our sense without the need for a large planned horizon (due date), which improves upon the work proposed by Policella et al. 2004.

Globally Distributed Software Development Project Performance: An Empirical Analysis, Narayanasamy Ramasubbu, Rajesh Krishna Balan Sep 2007

Globally Distributed Software Development Project Performance: An Empirical Analysis, Narayanasamy Ramasubbu, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software firms are increasingly distributing their software development effort across multiple locations. In this paper we present the results of a two year field study that investigated the effects of dispersion on the productivity and quality of distributed software development. We first develop a model of distributed software development. We then use the model, along with our empirically observed data, to understand the consequences of dispersion on software project performance. Our analysis reveals that, even in high process maturity environments, a) dispersion significantly reduces development productivity and has effects on conformance quality, and b) these negative effects of dispersion can …

Who’S Creating?, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We don’t read to retain information or knowledge any more. We search, scan, locate keywords, browse and bookmark. The Internet is doing to our reading habits what the calculator did to our arithmetic abilities. Knowledge is not cheap, although our easy access to it through the Internet may indicate otherwise. When we all become users of information, our knowledge will stop at its current level because nobody will be creating it any more.

Overview Of The Imageclef 2007 Object Retrieval Task, Thomas Deselaers, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We describe the object retrieval task of ImageCLEF 2007, give an overview of the methods of the participating groups, and present and discuss the results. The task was based on the widely used PASCAL object recognition data to train object recognition methods and on the IAPR TC-12 benchmark dataset from which images of objects of the ten different classes bicycles, buses, cars, motorbikes, cats, cows, dogs, horses, sheep, and persons had to be retrieved. Seven international groups participated using a wide variety of methods. The results of the evaluation show that the task was very challenging and that different methods …

Ntu: Solution For The Object Retrieval Task Of The Imageclef2007, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Object retrieval is an interdisciplinary research problem between object recognition and content-based image retrieval (CBIR). It is commonly expected that object retrieval can be solved more effectively with the joint maximization of CBIR and object recognition techniques. We study a typical CBIR solution with application to the object retrieval tasks [26,27]. We expect that the empirical study in this work will serve as a baseline for future research when using CBIR techniques for object recognition.

Chaos Theory And Literature From An Existentialist Perspective, Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman Sep 2007

Chaos Theory And Literature From An Existentialist Perspective, Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Yasser Khamees Ragab Aman proposes in his article "Chaos Theory and Literature from an Existentialist Perspective" that in literature the relation, principles, and processes of chaos and order can be analyzed from an existentialist perspective. Chaos lies at the heart of nothingness and order is the appearance of the achievement it tries to realize, temporary it may seem. Aman argues that with the application of chaos theory to works of literature may yield new insight and applies in his paper aspects of chaos theory reading three literary works which represent three different literatures and cultures, namely Arabic, English, and French. …

Role Of Mitochondrial Electron Transport Complex I In Coenzyme Q1 Reduction By Intact Pulmonary Arterial Endothelial Cells And The Effect Of Hyperoxia, Marilyn P. Merker, Said H. Audi, Brian J. Lindemer, Gary S. Krenz, Robert D. Bongard Sep 2007

Bongard

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The objective was to determine the impact of intact normoxic and hyperoxia-exposed (95% O(2) for 48 h) bovine pulmonary arterial endothelial cells in culture on the redox status of the coenzyme Q(10) homolog coenzyme Q(1) (CoQ(1)). When CoQ(1) (50 microM) was incubated with the cells for 30 min, its concentration in the medium decreased over time, reaching a lower level for normoxic than hyperoxia-exposed cells. The decreases in CoQ(1) concentration were associated with generation of CoQ(1) hydroquinone (CoQ(1)H(2)), wherein 3.4 times more CoQ(1)H(2) was produced in the normoxic than hyperoxia-exposed cell medium (8.2 +/- 0.3 and 2.4 +/- 0.4 microM, …

Stellar Population Models And Individual Element Abundances. I. Sensitivity Of Stellar Evolution Models, Aaron Dotter, Brian Chaboyer, Jason W. Ferguson, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, Darko Jevremović, E. Baron Sep 2007

Stellar Population Models And Individual Element Abundances. I. Sensitivity Of Stellar Evolution Models, Aaron Dotter, Brian Chaboyer, Jason W. Ferguson, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, Darko Jevremović, E. Baron

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Integrated light from distant galaxies is often compared to stellar population models via the equivalent widths of spectral features-spectral indices-whose strengths rely on the abundances of one or more elements. Such comparisons hinge not only on the overall metal abundance, but also on relative abundances. Studies have examined the influence of individual elements on synthetic spectra but little has been done to address similar issues in the stellar evolution models that underlie most stellar population models. Stellar evolution models will primarily be influenced by changes in opacities. In order to explore this issue in detail, 12 sets of stellar evolution …

Search For Gravitational Wave Radiation Associated With The Pulsating Tail Of The Sgr 1806−20 Hyperflare Of 27 December 2004 Using Ligo, B. P. Abbott, R. Abbott, Mario C. Diaz, R. Grosso, Soumya Mohanty, Soma Mukherjee, Cristina V. Torres

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have searched for gravitational waves (GWs) associated with the SGR 1806−20 hyperflare of 27 December 2004. This event, originating from a Galactic neutron star, displayed exceptional energetics. Recent investigations of the x-ray light curve’s pulsating tail revealed the presence of quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) in the 30–2000 Hz frequency range, most of which coincides with the bandwidth of the LIGO detectors. These QPOs, with well-characterized frequencies, can plausibly be attributed to seismic modes of the neutron star which could emit GWs. Our search targeted potential quasimonochromatic GWs lasting for tens of seconds and emitted at the QPO frequencies. We have …

Stellar Populations Across The Ngc 4244 Truncated Galactic Disk., Roelof De Jong, A. C. Seth, D. Radburn-Smith, E. F. Bell, T. M. Brown, J. S. Bullock, S. Courteau, J. J. Dalcanton, H. C. Ferguson, P. Goudfrooij, S. Holfeltz, Benne W. Holwerda, C. Purcell, J. Sick, D. B. Zucker

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

We use the Hubble Space Telescope ACS to study the resolved stellar populations of the nearby, nearly edgeon galaxy NGC 4244 across its outer disk surface density break. The stellar photometry allows us to study the distribution of different stellar populations and reach very low equivalent surface brightnesses. We find that the break occurs at the same radius for young, intermediate-age, and old stars. The stellar density beyond the break drops sharply by a factor of at least 600 in 5 kpc. The break occurs at the same radius independent of height above the disk, but is sharpest in the …

Birds, George M. Linz, Jim Hanzel Sep 2007

Birds, George M. Linz, Jim Hanzel

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Sunflower, due to the easy accessibility and high nutritional value of its seed, is particularly vulnerable to damage by birds (Figure 101). Seeds are exposed and the large head serves as a perch during feeding. Sunflower seed is a preferred bird food because the seed contains many proteins and fats essential to their growth, molt, fat storage and weight maintenance processes. Although many species of birds feed in maturing sunflower fields, the greatest losses are caused by migrating flocks of red-winged blackbirds, yellow- headed blackbirds and common grackles (Figure 102). Significant losses can occur in fields near cattail marshes.

Foraging Preferences Of Captive Canada Geese Related To Turfgrass Mixtures, Brian E. Washburn, Scott C. Barras, Thomas W. Seamans Sep 2007

Foraging Preferences Of Captive Canada Geese Related To Turfgrass Mixtures, Brian E. Washburn, Scott C. Barras, Thomas W. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Overabundant populations of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) cause economic and safety concerns associated with collisions with civil and military aircraft. Habitat management techniques that reduce the use of airfield habitats by geese might reduce these concerns. The objective of this study was to determine if captive Canada geese exhibited a foraging preference between a vegetation mixture consisting mostly of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens) versus an endophyte-infected tall fescue- (Festuca arundinacea) based vegetation mixture. We established 6 paired plots of perennial ryegrass-dominated and tall fescue-dominated mixtures at NASA …

A Classroom Outsourcing Experience For Software Engineering Learning, William L. Honig, Tejasvini Prasad Sep 2007

A Classroom Outsourcing Experience For Software Engineering Learning, William L. Honig, Tejasvini Prasad

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Outsourcing of software development is a key part of globalization, oft misunderstood by computer science students, and possibly a cause of declining enrollments in the field. The authors developed and implemented an outsourcing experience for students in an advanced software engineering course. Student teams at two universities developed game playing programs and outsourced key parts of their systems to the other university. Results show students improved their understanding of outsourcing, developed better appreciation for the importance of software engineering techniques, and created ad hoc communication protocols between teams. The paper concludes with recommendations for expanding the approach used to other …

Mobile Information Communication Technology For Crisis Management : Understanding User Behavior, Response And Training, Elizabeth Avery Gomez

Dissertations

SMS text-messaging is an interoperable communication vehicle known to be dependable for mass media alert notifications in crisis management. SMS text-messaging also offers potential as one viable two-way communication alternative for field responders in crisis response. Both continuously changing mobile information communication technologies and the importance of precise information exchange constitute a need for communication protocol training and practice. This study introduces a technology-mediated training technique based on speech act and communicative action theories. These theories are used to inform the design of a baseline measure for task performance improvement and to suggest a model to predict communication readiness. Because …

Ion Assisted Magnetron Sputtering Of Tantalum Thin Film Deposition And Characterization, Hua Ren

Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of ion bombardment on the crystallographic phases of tantalum films during their deposition by magnetron sputtering process, and to gain understanding of the mechanism of the ion-solid interactions during the thin film growth. Tantalum (Ta) exists in two distinct crystallographic phases: a stable α-phase with a body centered cubic (bcc) lattice structure and a metastable β-phase with a tetragonal lattice structure. The tough and ductile α-phase Ta is desired in most industrial applications, such as diffusion barrier layers in integrated circuits, metallic corrosion protective layers, and in biomedical devices. The …

Novel Model Of Cerebrospinal Fluid Dynamics Based On Hemodynamically Driven Cyclic Brain Compliance Variation, Bruno A. Mantilla Aug 2007

Novel Model Of Cerebrospinal Fluid Dynamics Based On Hemodynamically Driven Cyclic Brain Compliance Variation, Bruno A. Mantilla

Dissertations

This study provides a novel explanation for the CerebrQ-Spinal Fluid (CSF) flow pattern observed in phase contrast cine-MRJ studies. CSF dynamics has been traditionally explained as a bulk flow from the site of production to the site of absorption. Studies done with phase contrast cine-MRI show a more complex CSF movement, that is not explainable by the bulk flow paradigm. This study describes a mechanism explaining how the energy delivered by the heart in each cycle is responsible not only for the blood flow, but also for the CSF circulation. This mechanism is based on a cyclic variation of brain …

Designing Multimodal Interaction For The Visually Impaired, Xiaoyu Chen Aug 2007

Designing Multimodal Interaction For The Visually Impaired, Xiaoyu Chen

Dissertations

Although multimodal computer input is believed to have advantages over unimodal input, little has been done to understand how to design a multimodal input mechanism to facilitate visually impaired users' information access.

This research investigates sighted and visually impaired users' multimodal interaction choices when given an interaction grammar that supports speech and touch input modalities. It investigates whether task type, working memory load, or prevalence of errors in a given modality impact a user's choice. Theories in human memory and attention are used to explain the users' speech and touch input coordination.

Among the abundant findings from this research, the …

Interaction Of Methoxyethyl Methyl Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids With Uranium And Its Effect On Bioreduction Of Uranium, Hao Wang

Dissertations

Ionic liquids (ILs) are new materials with unique properties such as non-measurable vapor pressure, low melting point below 100°C and tunable physical-chemical properties. These liquids demonstrate tremendous potential applications in many fields, including nuclear waste treatment.

In this study, new MOEMIM (methoxyethyl methyl imidazolium)-based ionic liquids were synthesized. Their properties were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ETIR), mass spectroscopy (MS) and NMR (Nuclear magnetic resonance). The interaction between ILs and uranium has been explored by various analysis techniques, including pH, potentiometric titration, UV-vis, MS and EXAFS (extended x-ray absorption fine structure). Among all the ILs studied …

Design And Implementation Of Split Tcp In The Linux Kernel, Rahul Jain Aug 2007

Design And Implementation Of Split Tcp In The Linux Kernel, Rahul Jain

Dissertations

The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) was designed for reliable communication between computers over networks of unpredictable quality. It has admirably succeeded in satisfying the needs of the growing internet. Yet, there are combinations of network problems too bad even for TCP. In particular, in the situation of simultaneously very high delay (e.g. a satellite link) and high loss or even fading (a low quality earthlink or wireless link) on the same connection TCP can break down.

A known solution is “Split TCP” where one or more proxies (called Helper Boxes) are introduced to break the end-to-end connection into few (almost) …

Design, Fabrication And Testing Of A Fiber Optic Stress/Strain Sensor For Soft Stretchable Materials Using Polarization Imaging Technique, Jianjun Zheng

Dissertations

The polarization imaging technique has been used to obtain high quality surface images of turbid media. This technique can be slightly modified and used for noninvasive sensing of strain and stress in soft stretchable materials, such as latex and human tissues. Previously this sensing method was developed with free space bulk optics. In this study, a fiber optic based system is developed to investigate the potential application of this technology on the strain/stress as well as surface roughness measurements of stretchable materials. In this system, polarizers are simply attached to the fiber ends to form a polarizing three-fiber probe. Furthermore, …
