Maternal Serum Polychlorinated Biphenyl Concentrations Across Critical Windows Of Human Development, Michael S. Bloom, Germaine M. Buck-Louis, Aiyi Liu

Environmental Health Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Background

Few data are available on polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations over critical windows of human reproduction and development inclusive of the periconception window.

Objectives

Our goal was to measure changes in PCB concentrations from preconception to pregnancy, through pregnancy, or after a year without becoming pregnant.

Methods

Seventy-nine women planning pregnancies were prospectively enrolled and followed for up to 12 menstrual cycles of attempting pregnancy. Blood specimens were obtained from participating women preconceptionally (n = 79), after a positive pregnancy test leading to a live birth (n = 54) or pregnancy loss (n= 10), at approximately …

Asymptotic Behavior Of The Global Attractors To The Boussinesq System For Rayleigh-Bénard Convection At Large Prandtl Number, Xiaoming Wang Sep 2007

Asymptotic Behavior Of The Global Attractors To The Boussinesq System For Rayleigh-Bénard Convection At Large Prandtl Number, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study asymptotic behavior of the global attractors to the Boussinesq system for Rayleigh-Bénard convection at large Prandtl number. in particular, we show that the global attractors to the Boussinesq system for Rayleigh-Bénard convection converge to that of the infinite-Prandtl- number model for convection as the Prandtl number approaches infinity. This offers partial justification of the infinite-Prandtl-number model for convection as a valid simplified model for convection at large Prandtl number even in the long-time regime. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Increased availability of mobile computing, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), creates the potential for constant and intelligent access to up-to-date, integrated and detailed information from the Web, regardless of one's actual geographical position. Intelligent question-answering requires the representation of knowledge from various domains, such as the navigational and discourse context of the user, potential user questions, the information provided by Web services and so on, for example in the form of ontologies. Within the context of the SmartWeb project, we have developed a number of domain-specific ontologies that are relevant for mobile and intelligent user interfaces to open-domain question-answering …

Irish Emigration And Immigration To North America, David S. Ouimette, David E. Rencher Sep 2007

Irish Emigration And Immigration To North America, David S. Ouimette, David E. Rencher

BYU Family Historian

Irish immigration to the United States and Canada has been marked by peak periods of mass migration in history. Major historical events have triggered the influx of large numbers of Irish immigrants seeking better wages, more comfortable lifestyles, and political or religious freedom. Careless stereotypes have been attached to the immigrants and their methods of travel and lifestyles, but there were numerous ways to immigrate to North America and each course had the potential to create the records needed to identify a home county or parish. Irish emigration across the Atlantic began in the early 1600s. Emigration patterns mirrored the …

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the sixteenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. The Fact Book provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Saari’S Conjecture Is True For Generic Vector Fields, Tanya Schmah, Cristina Stoica Sep 2007

Saari’S Conjecture Is True For Generic Vector Fields, Tanya Schmah, Cristina Stoica

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The simplest non-collision solutions of the N-body problem are the “relative equilibria”, in which each body follows a circular orbit around the centre of mass and the shape formed by the N bodies is constant. It is easy to see that the moment of inertia of such a solution is constant. In 1970, D. Saari conjectured that the converse is also true for the planar Newtonian N-body problem: relative equilibria are the only constant-inertia solutions. A computer-assisted proof for the 3-body case was recently given by R. Moeckel, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. (2005). We present a different kind …

Measuring The Trade-Offs Between Economic Growth And Unequal Distribution Of The Benefits, Knowledge@Smu Sep 2007

Measuring The Trade-Offs Between Economic Growth And Unequal Distribution Of The Benefits, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

In an unequal world, how should countries evaluate the trade-offs between pursuing economic growth and the risks of unequal distribution of the benefits amongst individuals? London School of Economics professor and department head Danny Quah recently delivered an address on "Life in Unequal Growing Economies”, as part of the Singapore Management University School of Economics Distinguished Lecture Series. His paper proposes an empirical model to measure the trade-offs between economic growth and income inequality, and to assess the implications of such trade-offs for poverty alleviation and individual welfare.

Random Fuzzy Sets, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang Sep 2007

Random Fuzzy Sets, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is well known that in decision making under uncertainty, while we are guided by a general (and abstract) theory of probability and of statistical inference, each specific type of observed data requires its own analysis. Thus, while textbook techniques treat precisely observed data in multivariate analysis, there are many open research problems when data are censored (e.g., in medical or bio-statistics), missing, or partially observed (e.g., in bioinformatics). Data can be imprecise due to various reasons, e.g., due to fuzziness of linguistic data. Imprecise observed data are usually called {\it coarse data}. In this chapter, we consider coarse data …

In Some Curved Spaces, One Can Solve Np-Hard Problems In Polynomial Time, Vladik Kreinovich, Maurice Margenstern

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the late 1970s and the early 1980s, Yuri Matiyasevich actively used his knowledge of engineering and physical phenomena to come up with parallelized schemes for solving NP-hard problems in polynomial time. In this paper, we describe one such scheme in which we use parallel computation in curved spaces.

Ufuzzy Prediction Models In Measurement, Leon Reznik, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2007

Ufuzzy Prediction Models In Measurement, Leon Reznik, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The paper investigates a feasibility of fuzzy models application in measurement procedures. It considers the problem of measurement information fusion from different sources, when one of the sources provides predictions regarding approximate values of the measured variables or their combinations. Typically this information is given by an expert but may be mined from available data also. This information is formalized as fuzzy prediction models and is used in combination with the measurement results to improve the measurement accuracy. The properties of the modified estimates are studied in comparison with the conventional ones. The conditions when fuzzy models application can achieve …

Marine Ship Automatic Identification System (Ais) For Enhanced Coastal Security Capabilities: An Oil Spill Tracking Application, Kurt Schwehr, Philip A. Mcgillivary Sep 2007

Marine Ship Automatic Identification System (Ais) For Enhanced Coastal Security Capabilities: An Oil Spill Tracking Application, Kurt Schwehr, Philip A. Mcgillivary

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

National and international trade via shipping is already significant, and expected to continue increasing rapidly over the next decade. Both more ships and larger ships will contribute to this trade, includingships from countries with less rigorous shipping maintenance and inspection standards than the United States, and less strict pollution monitoring regulations. Changes in ship traffic management protocols have been implemented in recent years in the U.S. to minimize damage to coastlines, particularly near sensitive or protected marine environments. For example, to reduce risk to coastal resources off central California, shipping lanes for larger vessels were moved further offshore to allow …

Problems With Precision: A Response To “Comments On ‘Data Mining Static Code Attributes To Learn Defect Predictors’”, Tim Menzies, Alex Dekhtyar, Justin Distefano, Jeremy Greenwald

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Zhang and Zhang argue that predictors are useless unless they have high precison & recall. We have a different view, for two reasons. First, for SE data sets with large neg/pos ratios, it is often required to lower precision to achieve higher recall. Second, there are many domains where low precision detectors are useful.

Any-World Access To Owl From Prolog, Tobias Matzner, Pascal Hitzler Sep 2007

Any-World Access To Owl From Prolog, Tobias Matzner, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The W3C standard OWL provides a decidable language for representing ontologies. While its use is rapidly spreading, efforts are being made by researchers worldwide to augment OWL with additional expressive features or by interlacing it with other forms of knowledge representation, in order to make it applicable for even further purposes. In this paper, we integrate OWL with one of the most successful and most widely used forms of knowledge representation, namely Prolog, and present a hybrid approach which layers Prolog on top of OWL in such a way that the open-world semantics of OWL becomes directly accessible within the …
