Airport Wildlife Strike Summary And Risk Analysis Report: A New Addition To The Faa’S Wildlife Hazard Mitigation Website, Richard A. Dolbeer, Heather Marriot, Allen Newman
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 9th (2007)
Aircraft collisions with birds and other wildlife are an increasing concern for the aviation industry. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), through agreements with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wildlife Services and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, developed a National Wildlife Strike Database to better define the wildlife strike problem. Annual reports that summarize the data (about 72,500 strike records for civil aircraft in USA, 1990-2006) provide a foundation for FAA national policies and guidance regarding research and management efforts to reduce wildlife strikes. However, these national analyses do not provide specific information regarding strikes at individual airports or for other specific …

Www Integration Of Faa And Swa Birdstrike Reporting Systems, Stanley D. Clark
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 9th (2007)
The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) Birdstrike Reporting System has historically been a manual, “pen and paper” system since its inception. Because it has been so labor-intensive, birdstrike reporting by Southwest Airline Pilots could best be described as “sporadic” as long as the FAA system operated outside the internal airline system. By using web-based reporting systems, with imbedded checks and balances, Southwest Airlines has achieved a dramatic increase in birdstrikes reported to the FAA.

A Successful Case Study: The Bird Control Program Of Waste Management Outer Loop Recycling And Disposal Facility, Louisville, Kentucky, Usa, Russell P. Defusco
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 9th (2007)
Landfills and airports have a long history of incompatibility. Birds are attracted to landfills for various reasons including food sources, habitat, and orographic lift. Since landfills can be avian attractants, they are required to be sited at least 10,000 feet away from commercial airports in the United States. Waste Management of Kentucky (WMK) operates a municipal landfill and recycling facility -- the Outer Loop Recycling and Disposal Facility (OLRDF) located less than 1.5 miles south of the Louisville Standiford airport which, as the hub airport for United Parcel Service, is the fourth largest cargo airport in the U.S. As part …

Global Equivalent Circuit Modeling System For Substrate Mounted Circuit Components Incorporating Substrate Dependent Characteristics, Thomas Weller, John Capwell, Horace Gordon, Balaji Lakshminarayanan
USF Patents
The present invention is a substrate dependent circuit modeling system for substrate-mounted components. The height and dielectric constant of a substrate have a significant impact on the frequency response of such components, and these effects cannot be treated independently from the circuit model. The equivalent circuit parameters in the model must be made to vary in accordance with changes in the substrate. The invention includes the steps of selecting a substrate mounted electrical circuit component for which an equivalent circuit model is desired, determining equivalent circuit model input parameters, wherein some of which are dependent upon characteristics of the substrate …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Management programs aimed at reducing wildlife damage to row crops rely on information concerning the spatial nature of wildlife damage at local and landscape scales. In this study we explored spatial patterns of wildlife damage within individual corn and soybean fields by describing relationships between specific locations where wildlife damage was recorded and distances from such locations to various habitat types that presumably influenced animal abundance and movements in our study area. Using stratified random sampling, we conducted depredation surveys of 100 corn fields and 60 soybean fields from May through October both in 2003 and 2004 and recorded the …

Superconducting (Tc ∼40 K) YSr2Cu2.1Ru0.9O7.9, prepared by a high-temperature high-pressure process, has been studied by electron spin resonance (ESR), neutron diffraction and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. Neutron diffraction confirms the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru atoms at TN-Ru ∼140 K, as reported by Lynn and Takagiwa ESR data show antiferromagnetic order that persists well above the Ru ordering temperature, with an intensity that peaks close to TN-Ru. the ESR data are very similar to those observed in GdSr2Cu2RuO8 and YSr2Cu2.1Nb0.9O …
Unfolding Restricted Convex Caps, Joseph O'Rourke
Unfolding Restricted Convex Caps, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
This paper details an algorithm for unfolding a class of convex polyhedra, where each polyhedron in the class consists of a convex cap over a rectangular base, with several restrictions: the cap’s faces are quadrilaterals, with vertices over an underlying integer lattice, and such that the cap convexity is "radially monotone," a type of smoothness constraint. Extensions of Cauchy’s arm lemma are used in the proof of non-overlap.

Principals And Library Media Specialists Working Together: A Case Study Of One Elementary School, Diane Elaine Gregg
Principals And Library Media Specialists Working Together: A Case Study Of One Elementary School, Diane Elaine Gregg
Dissertations
Elementary school principals are busy people. They are torn away from instructional duties by daily emergencies and are challenged to track student achievement and plan for improvements. Library media specialists are in a position to help principals improve teaching and learning. Gaining a better understanding of a positive and productive working relationship between a principal and a library media specialist will give the field valuable insight into how present-day schools can meet the needs of instructional and administrative leadership. This qualitative study examined the working relationship of an elementary school principal and library media specialist in a public school setting. …

Transport Schemes On A Sphere Using Radial Basis Functions, Natasha Flyer, Grady Wright
Transport Schemes On A Sphere Using Radial Basis Functions, Natasha Flyer, Grady Wright
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The aim of this work is to introduce the physics community to the high performance of radial basis functions (RBFs) compared to other spectral methods for modeling transport (pure advection) and to provide the first known application of the RBF methodology to hyperbolic partial differential equations on a sphere. First, it is shown that even when the advective operator is posed in spherical coordinates (thus having singularities at the poles), the RBF formulation of it is completely singularity-free. Then, two classical test cases are conducted: 1) linear advection, where the initial condition is simply transported around the sphere and 2) …

Description Logic Programs: Normal Forms, Pascal Hitzler, Andreas Eberhart
Description Logic Programs: Normal Forms, Pascal Hitzler, Andreas Eberhart
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
The relationship and possible interplay between different knowledge representation and reasoning paradigms is a fundamental topic in artificial intelligence. For expressive knowledge representation for the Semantic Web, two different paradigms - namely Description Logics (DLs) and Logic Programming - are the two most successful approaches. A study of their exact relationships is thus paramount. An intersection of OWL with (function-free non-disjunctive) Datalog, called DLP (for Description Logic Programs), has been described in [1,2]. We provide normal forms for DLP in Description Logic syntax and in Datalog syntax, thus providing a bridge for the researcher and user who is familiar with …
Comparing Disjunctive Well-Founded Semantics, Matthias Knorr, Pascal Hitzler
Comparing Disjunctive Well-Founded Semantics, Matthias Knorr, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
While the stable model semantics, in the form of Answer Set Programming, has become a successful semantics for disjunctive logic programs, a corresponding satisfactory extension of the well-founded semantics to disjunctive programs remains to be found. The many current proposals for such an extension are so diverse, that even a systematic comparison between them is a challenging task. In order to aid the quest for suitable disjunctive well-founded semantics, we present a systematic approach to a comparison based on level mappings, a recently introduced framework for characterizing logic programming semantics, which was quite successfully used for comparing the major semantics …

Nonmagnetic Cloak With Minimized Scattering, Wenshan Cai, Uday K. Chettiar, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev, Graeme W. Milton
Birck and NCN Publications
In an electromagnetic cloak based on a transformation approach, reduced sets of material properties are generally favored due to their easier implementation in reality, although a seemingly inevitable drawback of undesired scattering exists in such cloaks. Here, the authors suggest the use of high-order transformations to create smooth moduli at the outer boundary of the cloak, therefore completely eliminating the detrimental scattering within the limit of geometric optics. The authors apply this scheme to a nonmagnetic cylindrical cloak and demonstrate that the scattered field is reduced substantially in a cloak with optimal quadratic transformation as compared to its linear counterpart.

The Agn-Obscuring Torus: The End Of The "Doughnut" Paradigm?, Moshe Elitzur, Isaac Shlosman
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Unified schemes of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) require an obscuring dusty torus around the central engine. The compact sizes (only a few parsecs) determined in recent high-resolution observations require that the obscuring matter be clumpy and located inside the region where the black hole gravity dominates over the galactic bulge. This location is in line with the scenario depicting the torus as the region of the clumpy wind coming off the accretion disk in which the clouds are dusty and optically thick. We study here the outflow scenario within the framework of hydromagnetic disk winds, incorporating the cloud properties determined …

Mathematical Analysis Of Pde Systems Which Govern °Uid Structure Interactive Phenomena, George Avalos, Roberto Triggiani
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we review and comment upon recently derived results for time dependent partial differential equation (PDE) models, which have been used to describe the various fluid-structure interactions which occur in nature. For these fluid-structure PDEs, this survey is particularly focused on the authors' results of (i) semigroup wellposedness, (ii) stability, and (iii) backward uniqueness.
Design And Implementation Of Test-Bed For Path Planning And Formation Control Of Cooperative Robotic Agents, Mike Majedi
Design And Implementation Of Test-Bed For Path Planning And Formation Control Of Cooperative Robotic Agents, Mike Majedi
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Robots are primary candidates to perform dangerous but controlled missions. They carry cameras, surveillance instruments, and sensors to collect information and relay their findings to their human operators. Man is continuously challenged to seek uncharted territories such as outer space and the oceans depths. Robot data collection allows for an operator to collect data in environments where it may be unsafe for humans to do so. It also allows for humans to perform inconvenient and tedious tasks such as waiting, and collecting information over long periods of time. In this thesis, we propose to design and implement a test-bed platform, …
Cooperative Strategies For Pairwise Secure Communication Channels In Sensor Networks, Peter Oelschlaeger
Cooperative Strategies For Pairwise Secure Communication Channels In Sensor Networks, Peter Oelschlaeger
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Establishing secure communication channels in sensor networks is made especially difficult because of low power resources, hostile environments, and wireless communication. The power requirements of traditional cryptographic methods create the need for alternative strategies for secure communication in sensor networks. This thesis explores key distribution techniques in sensor networks. Specifically, we study in depth one method that enables sensors to establish pairwise secure communication channels. This strategy relies on a cooperative set of peer sensors to construct a unique key between two sensors. We built a unique network simulator to test secure communication parameters in a typical deployment scenario. This …
Optimal Digital Filter Design For Dispersed Signal Equalization, Andrew Mihalik
Optimal Digital Filter Design For Dispersed Signal Equalization, Andrew Mihalik
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Any signal a satellite receives from Earth has traveled through the ionosphere. Transmission through the ionosphere results in a frequency dependent time-delay of the signal frequency components. This effect of the medium on the signal is termed dispersion, and it increases the difficulty of pulse detection. A system capable of compensating for the dispersion would be desirable, as pulsed signals would be more readily detected after compression. In this thesis, we investigate the derivation of a digital filter to compensate for the dispersion caused by the ionosphere. A transfer function model for the analysis of the ionosphere as a system …

John Thomas' Art Rediscovered: An Introduction, Harvey Hess
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Jerré Tanner's splendid (but by no means exhaustive) monograph, On the Origins and Applications of the Grid in the Art of John Paul Thomas presents the first internet presence, in the twenty-first century, of one of the most significant artists of the twentieth. That a chasm of close to two decades could gape between the most recent examples of Thomas studies, when the internet had not yet begun its astonishing career, seems no less astonishing than that a species of "dark ages" could descend upon the work and fame of an artist of "light," and-as Tanner reveals-a re-creation of pictorial …
Compact Modeling Of Neutron Damage Effects In A Bipolar Junction Transistor, Teresa Gutierrez
Compact Modeling Of Neutron Damage Effects In A Bipolar Junction Transistor, Teresa Gutierrez
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The performance of microelectronics in a radiation environment is an important concern for defense and space applications. Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), in particular, are susceptible to neutron radiation. Neutron radiation affects BJT performance primarily by creating lattice defects, which can dramatically increase carrier recombination rate. In turn, the increase in recombination rate degrades the current gain. Two approaches were taken in the development of a compact BJT model that include the effects of static neutron damage. One approach is based on the Gummel-Poon term for recombination current. The other approach is based on the Shockley-Read-Hall theory of recombination. Simulation results …
Cramer-Rao Bound Analysis Of Multi-Frame Blind Deconvolution, Alim Haji
Cramer-Rao Bound Analysis Of Multi-Frame Blind Deconvolution, Alim Haji
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
This thesis explores how support constraints and multiple frames affect multi-frame blind deconvolution. Previous research in non-blind deconvolution, which seeks to estimate an object from a blurred and noisy image, characterized how the use of support constraints exploited spatial noise correlations to reduce noise in the estimate of the object. In multi-frame blind deconvolution, the blurring function is unknown and must be estimated along with the object. Applying a support constraint to both the object and the blurring functions, when using blind deconvolution, is one way to ensure a unique solution. The effects on the estimate of the object as …

Interactive Web Portal Application For Ambalta School For Children With Autism, Cathy Talbot
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Abalta is a school, based in Galway, designed to educate children who suffer from autism. The school was borne out of the identified need for children with autism to get a specific focused education. In July, 2001, four sets of parents came together, using their own personal funds, to establish the school and had it up and running by September, 2001. It took months of hard work, political negotiating, and lobbying, culminating with a high court case to attain funding from the state. In today's Internet-oriented world, a web application is essential for businesses, organiiations and individuals to optimiie their …
