Fixed Points Of Abelian Actions On S2, John Franks, Michael Handel, Kamlesh Parwani

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

We prove that if $F$ is a finitely generated abelian group of orientation preserving $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of $R^2$ which leaves invariant a compact set then there is a common fixed point for all elements of $F.$ We also show that if $F$ is any abelian subgroup of orientation preserving $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of $S^2$ then there is a common fixed point for all elements of a subgroup of $F$ with index at most two.

AFRL/RHDO has developed a configurable, laser-tissue interaction model that includes components from various areas of Biophysics. The model predicts heat transfer in biological tissue, in either one-dimension or two-dimensional cylindrical coordinates, and is coupled to an Arrhenius damage model. A simulation can be configured as a single run, or a damage-threshold search. Multiple models for describing the laser-tissue interaction are available, including linear absorption (1D, 2D), Monte Carlo scattering (2D) and Beam Propagation Methods using Finite Difference approximations or Hankel Transform methods (2D).

Setting Ubvri Photometric Zero-Points Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Ugriz Magnitudes, Taylor S. Chonis, C. Martin Gaskell Oct 2007

Setting Ubvri Photometric Zero-Points Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Ugriz Magnitudes, Taylor S. Chonis, C. Martin Gaskell

C. Martin Gaskell Publications

We discuss the use of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) ugriz point-spread function (PSF) photometry for setting the zero points of UBVRI CCD images. From a comparison with the Landolt (1992) standards and our own photometry we find that there is a fairly abrupt change in B, V, R, & I zero points around g, r, i ~ 14.5, and in the U zero point at u ~ 16. These changes correspond to where there is significant interpolation due to saturation in the SDSS PSF fluxes. There also seems to be another, much smaller systematic effect for stars with g,r …

The Accountable Attorney: A Proposal To Revamp The Aba’S 1976 Statement Of Policy Regarding Lawyers’ Responses To Auditors’ Requests For Information, James S. Johnson Oct 2007

The Accountable Attorney: A Proposal To Revamp The Aba’S 1976 Statement Of Policy Regarding Lawyers’ Responses To Auditors’ Requests For Information, James S. Johnson

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The American Bar Association's (ABA) long-standing compromise' with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) regarding the role of lawyers in audits of public companies needs an overhaul. The current process is dysfunctional: accountants attempt to opine on a company's disclosures about litigation and to assess loss exposure without any foundation in the legal issues involved. During this process, those accountants turn to their clients' attorneys for help. But lawyers, concerned about preserving confidentiality and privilege, routinely respond to the accountants' requests with verbiage honed to say nothing at all. This Comment argues that the time has come to …

Fast Algorithms For Computing Statistics Under Interval Uncertainty: An Overview, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang Oct 2007

Fast Algorithms For Computing Statistics Under Interval Uncertainty: An Overview, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many areas of science and engineering, it is desirable to estimate statistical characteristics (mean, variance, covariance, etc.) under interval uncertainty. For example, we may want to use the measured values x(t) of a pollution level in a lake at different moments of time to estimate the average pollution level; however, we do not know the exact values x(t) -- e.g., if one of the measurement results is 0, this simply means that the actual (unknown) value of x(t) can be anywhere between 0 and the detection limit DL. We must therefore modify the existing statistical algorithms to process such …

A Statistical Model To Forecast Short-Term Atlantic Hurricane Intensity, Kevin Law, Jay S. Hobgood Oct 2007

A Statistical Model To Forecast Short-Term Atlantic Hurricane Intensity, Kevin Law, Jay S. Hobgood

Geography Faculty Research

An alternative 24-h statistical hurricane intensity model is presented and verified for 13 hurricanes during the 2004–05 seasons. The model uses a new method involving a discriminant function analysis (DFA) to select from a collection of multiple regression equations. These equations were developed to predict the future 24-h wind speed increase and the 24-h pressure drop that were constructed from a dataset of 103 hurricanes from 1988 to 2003 that utilized 25 predictors of rapid intensification. The accuracy of the 24-h wind speed increase models was tested and compared with the official National Hurricane Center (NHC) 24-h intensity forecasts, which …

Technique Integration For Requirements Assessment, Alex Dekhtyar, Jane Huffman Hayes, Senthil Sundaram, Ashlee Holbrook, Olga Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In determining whether to permit a safety-critical software system to be certified and in performing independent verification and validation (IV&V) of safety- or mission-critical systems, the requirements traceability matrix (RTM) delivered by the developer must be assessed for accuracy. The current state of the practice is to perform this work manually, or with the help of general-purpose tools such as word processors and spreadsheets Such work is error-prone and person-power intensive. In this paper, we extend our prior work in application of Information Retrieval (IR) methods for candidate link generation to the problem of RTM accuracy assessment. We build voting …

Hybrid Multiscale Landmark And Deformable Image Registration, Dana C. Paquin, Doron Levy, Lei Xing Oct 2007

Hybrid Multiscale Landmark And Deformable Image Registration, Dana C. Paquin, Doron Levy, Lei Xing

Mathematics

An image registration technique is presented for the registration of medical images using a hybrid combination of coarse-scale landmark and B-splines deformable registration techniques. The technique is particularly effective for registration problems in which the images to be registered contain large localized deformations. A brief overview of landmark and deformable registration techniques is presented. The hierarchical multiscale image decomposition of E. Tadmor, S. Nezzar, and L. Vese, A multiscale image representation using hierarchical (BV,L2) decompositions, Multiscale Modeling and Simulations, vol. 2, no. 4, pp. 554-579, 2004, is reviewed, and an image registration algorithm is developed based on …

Toward A More Accurate View Of When And How People Seek Help With Computer Applications, David Novick, Edith Elizalde, Nathaniel Bean Oct 2007

Toward A More Accurate View Of When And How People Seek Help With Computer Applications, David Novick, Edith Elizalde, Nathaniel Bean

Selected Works Temporary Series

Based on 40 interviews and 11 on-site workplace observations of people using computer applications at work, we confirm that use of printed and on-line help is very low and find that providing greater detail of categories solution methods can present a more realistic picture of users’ behaviors. Observed study participants encountered a usability problem on average about once every 75 minutes and typically spent about a minute looking for a solution. Participants consumed much more time when they were unaware of a direct way of doing something and instead used less effective methods. Comparison of results from different data-collection methods …

Usability Inspection Methods After 15 Years Of Research And Practice, Tasha Hollingsed, David Novick Oct 2007

Usability Inspection Methods After 15 Years Of Research And Practice, Tasha Hollingsed, David Novick

Selected Works Temporary Series

Usability inspection methods, such as heuristic evaluation, the cognitive walkthrough, formal usability inspections, and the pluralistic usability walkthrough, were introduced fifteen years ago. Since then, these methods, analyses of their comparative effectiveness, and their use have evolved in different ways. In this paper, we track the fortunes of the methods and analyses, looking at which led to use and to further research, and which led to relative methodological dead ends. Heuristic evaluation and the cognitive walkthrough appear to be the most actively used and researched techniques. The pluralistic walkthrough remains a recognized technique, although not the subject of significant further …

Why Logging? A Value Assessment Of Forestry Uses In The Huon Forest District, Ryan Bailey Oct 2007

Why Logging? A Value Assessment Of Forestry Uses In The Huon Forest District, Ryan Bailey

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Huon Forest District comprises 762,800 hectares of forests in southwest Tasmania, with 128,900 hectares of that total designated as state forest managed by Forestry Tasmania. These forests are used primarily for wood production, although tourism, carbon storage, leatherwood honey and the specialty timbers industry are competing for access to these forests. This study examines the socio-economic values of these uses and determines whether the Huon Forest District is being utilized efficiently.

To accomplish this, an extensive literature review of past research was conducted. This information supplemented 7 semi-structured interviews that were conducted with experts from the forestry industry, tourism …

Accounting For Ecosystem Flows: Setting A Standard For Australian Industries To Make Sustainable Decisions, Emily Gilbert Oct 2007

Accounting For Ecosystem Flows: Setting A Standard For Australian Industries To Make Sustainable Decisions, Emily Gilbert

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper explains the System of Environmental and Economic Accounting’s (SEEA) approach to environmental accounting flow systems and how this system is now being utilized in the creation of new Australian standards of accounting. The first part of the paper discusses in depth different accounting systems, primarily physical and hybrid accounting systems, as they relate to the measures set forth by the SEEA. The second part analyzes the differences between the SEEA’s gross accounting system in comparison to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) net accounting system. This includes a type of “pro-con” way of looking at which is …

Ontogenetic Changes In Feeding Ecology And Habitat Of The Damselfish Neoglyphidodon Melas At Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Sai-Wing Chan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examines ontogenetic shift in habitat and feeding ecology of the black damselfish, Neoglyphidodon melas in three patch reef sites at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. This rarely studied species is unique in its coprophagous relationship with the faeces of the giant clam Tridacna gigas. Distribution and habitat composition between three sites and two reef zones was estimated with 48 Visual Belt and Point Intercept Transects. 80 Focal Animal Studies revealed specific foraging strategies and aggressive behaviours. The timing of this study permitted the inclusion of juvenile recruits resulting in a more complete and comprehensive study across developmental stages. …

Computing Mechanisms, Gualtiero Piccinini Oct 2007

Computing Mechanisms, Gualtiero Piccinini

Philosophy Faculty Works

This paper offers an account of what it is for a physical system to be a computing mechanism—a system that performs computations. A computing mechanism is a mechanism whose function is to generate output strings from input strings and (possibly) internal states, in accordance with a general rule that applies to all relevant strings and depends on the input strings and (possibly) internal states for its application. This account is motivated by reasons endogenous to the philosophy of computing, namely, doing justice to the practices of computer scientists and computability theorists. It is also an application of recent literature on …
