On The Variability Of Mesospheric Oh Emission Profiles, Romina Nikoukar, Gary R. Swenson, Alan Z. Liu, Farzad Kamalabadi Oct 2007

On The Variability Of Mesospheric Oh Emission Profiles, Romina Nikoukar, Gary R. Swenson, Alan Z. Liu, Farzad Kamalabadi

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

Mesospheric OH radiance limb profiles measured by the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument aboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) spacecraft were inverted to yield altitude profiles of OH volume emission rates. The Abel inversion results of two months of data (from 1 June to 31 July 2004) were analyzed for the layer mean and standard deviation as a function of latitude and local time. Statistical analysis of SABER data shows that the global difference between the mean and standard deviation profiles for the OH(vu = 7, 8, 9; ∆v …

Optimization Of Non-Natural Nucleotides For Selective Incorporation Opposite Damaged Dna, Diana Vineyard, Xuemei Zhang, Alison Donnelley, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis Oct 2007

Optimization Of Non-Natural Nucleotides For Selective Incorporation Opposite Damaged Dna, Diana Vineyard, Xuemei Zhang, Alison Donnelley, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The promutagenic process known as translesion DNA synthesis reflects the ability of a DNA polymerase to misinsert a nucleotide opposite a damaged DNA template. To study the underlying mechanism of nucleotide selection during this process, we quantified the incorporation of various non-natural nucleotide analogs opposite an abasic site, a non-templating DNA lesion. Our kinetic studies using the bacteriophage T4 DNA polymerase reveal that the π-electron surface area of the incoming nucleotide substantially contributes to the efficiency of incorporation opposite an abasic site. A remaining question is whether the selective insertion of these non-hydrogen-bonding analogs can be achieved through optimization of …

Time Dependent Discrete Ordinates Neutron Transport Using Distribution Iteration In Xyz Geometry, James R. Dishaw Oct 2007

Time Dependent Discrete Ordinates Neutron Transport Using Distribution Iteration In Xyz Geometry, James R. Dishaw

Theses and Dissertations

The DI algorithm is an alternative to source iteration that, in our testing, does not require an accelerator. I developed a formal verification plan and executed it to verify the results produced by my code that implemented DI with the above features. A new, matrix albedo, boundary condition treatment was developed and implemented so that infinite-medium benchmarks could be included in the verification test suite. The DI algorithm was modified for parallel efficiency and the prior instability of the refinement sweep was corrected. The testing revealed that DI performed as well or faster than source iteration with DSA and that …

Evaluation Of Irrigation Strategies With The Dssat Cropping System Model, Derek M. Heeren, Hal D. Warner, Todd P. Trooien Oct 2007

Evaluation Of Irrigation Strategies With The Dssat Cropping System Model, Derek M. Heeren, Hal D. Warner, Todd P. Trooien

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Water is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity with shortages and water rationing more commonplace. Since irrigation is the largest consumptive use of water in South Dakota, accounting for over 70% of the water withdrawals, irrigation water management is critical to make the best use of the water available. This project uses the CERES-Maize cropping system model (available in DSSAT v4) to study the impact of various irrigation management strategies on corn production. SDSU management software developed by Oswald (2006) is used to simulate a center pivot for specific locations and years. Weather data from several sites in the Great Plains …

Second-Order Quasinormal Mode Of The Schwarzschild Black Hole, Hiroyuki Nakano, Kunihito Ioka Oct 2007

Second-Order Quasinormal Mode Of The Schwarzschild Black Hole, Hiroyuki Nakano, Kunihito Ioka

Articles

We formulate and calculate the second order quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of a Schwarzschild black hole (BH). Gravitational wave (GW) from a distorted BH, so called ringdown, is well understood as QNMs in general relativity. Since QNMs from binary BH mergers will be detected with high signal-to-noise ratio by GW detectors, it is also possible to detect the second perturbative order of QNMs, generated by nonlinear gravitational interaction near the BH. In the BH perturbation approach, we derive the master Zerilli equation for the metric perturbation to second order and explicitly regularize it at the horizon and spatial infinity. We numerically …

A Smoothing Approach To Data Masking, Yijie Zhous, Francesca Dominici, Thomas A. Louis Oct 2007

A Smoothing Approach To Data Masking, Yijie Zhous, Francesca Dominici, Thomas A. Louis

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Individual-level data are often not publicly available due to confidentiality. Instead, masked data are released for public use. However, analyses performed using masked data may produce invalid statistical results such as biased parameter estimates or incorrect standard errors. In this paper, we propose a data masking method using spatial smoothing, and we investigate the bias of parameter estimates resulting from analyses using the masked data for Generalized Linear Models (GLM). The method allows for varying both the form and the degree of masking by utilizing a smoothing weight function and a smoothness parameter. We show that data masking by using …

Analysis, Selection, And Implementation Of A Case Management System For Local City Government Attorney's Office, Patricia D. Hughes Oct 2007

Analysis, Selection, And Implementation Of A Case Management System For Local City Government Attorney's Office, Patricia D. Hughes

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper focuses on the business analysis, selection, and implementation of a case management system for a local government City Attorney's Office which is a document management system in addition to calendaring, notes, tasks, and billing. Their current system relies on paper document organization and as well as some electronic documentation in a simple file folder structure on a windows network file server. A business analysis review demonstrated the need for a cost effective automated business system to support and manage daily business processes, automate document creation and filing, track deadlines and tasks, and comply with new document retention and …

Time Resolution Of Collapse Events During The Progation Of Ultraviolet Filaaments, Teresa J. Fondren Oct 2007

Time Resolution Of Collapse Events During The Progation Of Ultraviolet Filaaments, Teresa J. Fondren

Theses and Dissertations

Long distance propagation, or filamentation, of short, intense laser pulses is suggested to be possible through the balance of two effects: self-focusing, when a nonlinear index of refraction of air is induced by high intensities, and de-focusing, due to the plasma created by the pulse. Applications for filamentation include areas such as remote sensing and directed energy. A split-step spectral propagation simulation is used to model the behavior of a high intensity ultraviolet laser pulse propagating through air. Convergence of femtosecond duration collapses that form on the leading edge of the pulse in the time domain is achieved with an …

Quasi-Local Linear Momentum In Black-Hole Binaries, Badri Krishnan, Carlos O. Lousto, Yosef Zlochower Oct 2007

Quasi-Local Linear Momentum In Black-Hole Binaries, Badri Krishnan, Carlos O. Lousto, Yosef Zlochower

Articles

We propose a quasi-local formula for the linear momentum of black-hole horizons inspired by the formalism of quasi-local horizons. We test this formula using two complementary configurations: (i) by calculating the large orbital linear momentum of the two black holes in an unequal-mass, zero-spin, quasi-circular binary and (ii) by calculating the very small recoil momentum imparted to the remnant of the head-on collision of an equal-mass, anti-aligned-spin binary. We obtain results consistent with the horizon trajectory in the orbiting case, and consistent with the net radiated linear momentum for the much smaller head-on recoil velocity.

Module 9: The Learning Cycle Oct 2007

Module 9: The Learning Cycle

Module 9: The Learning Cycle

It is quite clear in the research related to the work of Piaget that persons need many years of practice in meaningful understanding and manipulating relationships with the aid of concrete-empirical props. Gradually they develop greater facility in performing these operations and they are able to perform the same operations without relying upon props. In other words, "hands-on", "eyes-on" experiences are essential prerequisites for the development of advanced reasoning abilities.

On the basis of this developmental theory, classroom activities may play a central role in the improvement of student reasoning. Given the possible importance of classroom experiences , does it …

Module 10: Teaching Goals And Strategies

Module 10: Teaching Goals and Strategies

At this time in the workshop you may be wondering how you can begin to use the ideas of stages of reasoning and self-regulation immediately, without writing your own textbook or developing all new laboratory activities. Even though the teaching materials have a strong influence on your course, your own personal actions and approaches to the students can be very important as well. In this module we shall describe procedures that will enable you to make your teaching more effective in stimulating your students to use their existing reasoning patterns and to develop new ones by self-regulation. We shall also …

Module 7: Analysis Of Textbooks

Module 7: Analysis of Textbooks

Probably you have had many students at the end of the semester tell you they could not read the text or else they read it and got nothing out of it. One cause of this could be a mismatch between the reasoning skills the student normally uses and the skills the textbook requires. As you read the text excerpts selected for your review, keep in mind the characteristics of concrete and formal reasoning as explained in Module 2. Also, remember that even students using formal reasoning find it easier and probably understand in a more broadly-based way if they can …
