Periodically Collapsing Bubbles In The Asian Emerging Stock Markets, Ako Doffou Jan 2007

Periodically Collapsing Bubbles In The Asian Emerging Stock Markets, Ako Doffou

WCBT Faculty Publications

This paper investigates empirically the existence of periodically collapsing bubbles in the Asian emerging stock markets using the Enders-Siklos (2001) momentum threshold autoregressive model. As explained in Bohl (2003), this non-linear time series technique can be used to analyze bubble driven run-ups in stock prices followed by a crash in a non- cointegration framework with asymmetric adjustment. This technique offers a more potent insight in the stock prices behavior than can possibly be obtained using conventional non-cointegration tests. The empirical findings for ten Asian emerging stock markets from 1993 to 2005 refute the bubble hypothesis.

Classification Of Dry-Milled Maize Grit Yield Groups Using Quadratic Discriminant Analysis And Decision Tree Algorithm, Kyung-Min Lee, Timothy J. Herrman, Scott R. Bean, David S. Jackson, Jane Lingenfelser Jan 2007

Classification Of Dry-Milled Maize Grit Yield Groups Using Quadratic Discriminant Analysis And Decision Tree Algorithm, Kyung-Min Lee, Timothy J. Herrman, Scott R. Bean, David S. Jackson, Jane Lingenfelser

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

A genetically and environmentally diverse collection of maize (Zea maize L.) samples was evaluated for physical properties and grit yield to help develop a standard set of criteria to identify grain best suited for drymilling. Application of principal component analysis (PCA) reduced a set of approximately 500 samples collected from six states to 154 maize hybrids. Selected maize hybrids were placed into seven groups according to their dry-milled grit yields. Regression analysis explained only 50% of the variability in dry-milling grit yield. Patterns of differences in the physical properties for the seven grit yield groups implied that the seven …

A Theory Of Argument (Book Review), G. C. Goddu Jan 2007

A Theory Of Argument (Book Review), G. C. Goddu

Philosophy Faculty Publications

A Theory of Argument is an advanced textbook “written for upper-level undergraduate students who have completed at least one prior course in argumentation theory, critical thinking, informal logic, formal logic, or some other related discipline” (ix). This puts Vorobej’s book in a unique position since, to my knowledge, there are no other second course undergraduate textbooks with a nonsymbolic focus. (Second course symbolic logic textbooks written for undergraduates, rather than primarily for graduate students, were relatively rare until recently; the past decade has seen a proliferation in such texts.)

Walton On Argument Structure, G. C. Goddu Jan 2007

Walton On Argument Structure, G. C. Goddu

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In previous work I argued against (i) the likelihood of finding a theoretically sound foundation for the linked/convergent distinction and (ii) the utility of the distinction even if a sound theoretical basis could be found. Here I subject Douglas Walton’s comprehensive discussion of the linked/convergent distinction found in Argument Structure: A Pragmatic Theory to careful scrutiny and argue that at best Walton’s theory remains incomplete and that attempts to fill out the details will run afoul of at least one of the problems adduced above—i.e., result in either a theoretically unsound distinction or a theoretically sound, but unnecessary distinction.

Demonstration Of Magnetoelectric Scanning Probe Microscopy, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, Liyang Dai, Manfred Wuttig, Ichiro Takeuchi, Eckhard Quandt

Faculty Publications

A near-field room temperature scanning magnetic probe microscope has been developed using a laminated magnetoelectric sensor. The simple trilayer longitudinal-transverse mode sensor, fabricated using Metglas as the magnetostrictive layer and polyvinylidene fluoride as the piezoelectric layer, shows an ac field sensitivity of 467±3μV∕Oe in the measured frequency range of 200Hz–8kHz. The microscope was used to image a 2mm diameter ring carrying an ac current as low as 10−5A. ac fields as small as 3×10−10T have been detected.

Rapid Structural Mapping Of Ternary Metallic Alloy Systems Using The Combinatorial Approach And Cluster Analysis, C. J. Long, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, M. Murakami, R. C. Srivastava, I. Takeuchi, V. L. Karen, X. Li

Faculty Publications

We are developing a procedure for the quick identification of structural phases in thin film composition spread experiments which map large fractions of compositional phase diagrams of ternary metallic alloy systems. An in-house scanning x-ray microdiffractometer is used to obtain x-ray spectra from 273 different compositions on a single composition spread library. A cluster analysissoftware is then used to sort the spectra into groups in order to rapidly discover the distribution of phases on the ternary diagram. The most representative pattern of each group is then compared to a database of known structures to identify known phases. Using this method, …

Short-Time Transient Analysis Of Intercalation Of An Ion Into A Sphere, Sheba Devan, Ralph E. White Jan 2007

Short-Time Transient Analysis Of Intercalation Of An Ion Into A Sphere, Sheba Devan, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A short-time transient analysis is presented for a sinusoidal input potential for a spherical particle. The objective of this work was to extract accurate values of the parameters associated with an intercalation into a spherical particle. These parameters are exchange current density, double-layer capacitance, and diffusion coefficient. The effects of these parameters on the response were examined using a sensitivity analysis, which indicated that optimum frequency values of the input perturbation exist for estimation of these parameters. A procedure is presented to obtain all these parameters using the short-time response. The results show that the short-time analysis is a useful …

Analytical Expression For The Impedance Response Of An Insertion Electrode Cell, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White Jan 2007

Analytical Expression For The Impedance Response Of An Insertion Electrode Cell, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

An analytical expression for the impedance response of an insertion cathode/separator/foil anode cell sandwich is presented. The analytical expression includes the impedance contributions from interfacial kinetics, double-layer adsorption, and solution-phase and solid-phase diffusion processes. The validity of the analytical solution is ascertained by comparison with the numerical solution obtained for a LiCoO2 /polypropylene/lithium metal cell. The flexibility of the analytical solution is utilized to analyze various limiting conditions. An expression to estimate solid-phase diffusion coefficient of insertion species in a porous electrode influenced by the solution-phase diffusion process is also derived

Parameter Estimation And Model Discrimination For A Lithium-Ion Cell, Shriram Santhanagopalan, Qingzhi Guo, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

Two different models were used to obtain transport and kinetic parameters using nonlinear regression from experimental charge/discharge curves of a lithium-ion cell measured at 35°C under four rates, C/5, C/2, 1C, and 2C, where the C rate is 1.656A . The Levenberg-Marquardt method was used to estimate parameters in the models such as the diffusion of lithium ions in the positive electrode. A confidence interval for each parameter was also presented. The parameter values lie within their confidence intervals. The use of statistical weights to correct for the scatter in experimental data as well as to treat one set of …

Estimates Of Gross Transformation Rates Of Dairy Manure N Using 15N Pool Dilution, T. S. Griffin Jan 2007

Estimates Of Gross Transformation Rates Of Dairy Manure N Using 15N Pool Dilution, T. S. Griffin

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Most measurements of dairy manure nitrogen (N) availability depend on net
changes in soil inorganic N concentration over time, which overlooks the cycling of manure N in the soil. Gross transformations of manure N, including mineralization (m), immobilization (i), and nitrification (n), can be quantified using 15N pool dilution methods. This research measures gross m, n, and i resulting from application of four freeze-dried dairy manures that had distinctly different patterns of N availability. A sandy loam soil (coarse-loamy, mixed, frigid Typic Haplorthod) was amended with four different freeze-dried dairy manures and …

The Systemic Nature Of Critical Infrastructure Protection Using A Medium Sized Company As The Case Study, Jeffery Sewell Jan 2007

The Systemic Nature Of Critical Infrastructure Protection Using A Medium Sized Company As The Case Study, Jeffery Sewell

Theses : Honours

Critical infrastructure can be defined as privately and publicly run organisations such as energy systems, water systems, transportation, telecommunications, emergency services, banking and finance. The critical infrastructure (CI) on which society relies is now dependent on the interconnected communication networks the information age has spawned. With the evolution of the information age, not only has the communications landscape changed dramatically, the security landscape has changed too. With information technology being so ubiquitous, it has created new underlying concerns about the systems now reliant on them. The reliance and complexity of these interconnected systems has increased vulnerabilities confronting critical infrastructure. This …

Utilizing Uv And Visible Sensors On Micro Satellites To Demonstrate Target Acquisition And Tracking, Steven Brown, Dean Wada, Ali Ghafourian, Mark Greenman, Charles Harris, Carl Howlett, Thomas Humpherys, Vincent Nguyen

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

The Distributed Sensing Experiment (DSE) program is a technology demonstration of target acquisition, tracking, and three-dimensional track development using a constellation of three micro satellites. DSE will demonstrate how micro satellites, working singly and as a group, can observe test-missile boost and ballistic-flight events. The overarching program objective is to demonstrate a means of fusing measurements from multiple sensors into a composite track. To perform this demonstration, each DSE micro satellite will acquire and track a target, determine a two-dimensional direction and movement rate for each, communicate observations to other DSE satellites, determine a three-dimensional target position and velocity, and …

Statistical Approach To Validation Of Satellite Atmospheric Retrievals, Nikita Pougatchev, Gail Bingham, Dian Seidel, Franz Berger Jan 2007

Statistical Approach To Validation Of Satellite Atmospheric Retrievals, Nikita Pougatchev, Gail Bingham, Dian Seidel, Franz Berger

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A mathematical model for statistical estimate of the bias and noise in satellite retrievals of atmospheric profiles and a case study are presented. The model allows accurate validation of actual performance of the remote sensing system while in orbit by comparing its measurements to correlative data sets, e. g. radiosonde network. The model accounts for the following factors: (i) The satellite and validating systems sample volumes of the atmosphere at times and locations that are not exactly co-located. (ii) The validated and validating systems have different characteristics, e. g. different vertical resolution and noise level. All the above factors cause …

St. Peter Canisius And The Youth: Jesuit Educators In Counterreformation Germany, Kendra Anne Willey

Honors Program Theses

On the 31st of July, 1555, the noted Protestant reformer, Philipp Melanchthon, wrote this short note to his colleague, Adam Wasser: "[Melanchthon] betet um Rettung vor Gefahren, der Seuche in [Wittenberg], [Petrus Canisius] in Prag und den Turken." The man in Prague whom Melanchthon referred to was a priest of the Society of Jesus. This Peter Canisius (1521-1597) must surely have been either a terror or great nuisance to Melanchthon in order to put this man on the same level as the dangers of plague and the Turks. In fact, this man was a formidable opponent, a forerunner of the …

On-Chip Digital Decoupling Capacitance Methodology, Eric Scott Bohannon Jan 2007

On-Chip Digital Decoupling Capacitance Methodology, Eric Scott Bohannon

Theses

Signal integrity has become a major problem in digital IC design. One cause of this problem is device scaling which results in a sharp reduction of supply voltage, creating stringent noise margin requirements to ensure functionality. Reductions in feature size also result in increased clock speeds leading to many different high frequency noise producing components. As on-chip area increases to allow for more computational capability, so does the amount of digital logic to be placed, magnifying the effects of noisy interconnect structures.

Supply noise, modeled as AV = Ldi/dt , is caused by rapid current spikes during a rise or …

Pov-It: The Pov-Ray Interactive Tutorial, Eleanor O'Rourke

Honors Theses

The Persistence of Vision Ray Tracer, commonly known as POV-Ray, is a computer graphics package that can be used to produce highly sophisticated and photorealistic images and animations. POV-Ray is widely used in the computer graphics community for a diverse variety of applications, including teaching college courses, creating visual music animations, and generating computer art. Although the popularity of POV-Ray is apparent, the teaching materials available for the package are confusing, disorganized, and inaccessible. In this project, I have designed an online system that provides a series of interactive tutorials that teach users how to create images using the POV-Ray …

Stochastic Models For Enhancing Agility Of Supply Chains, Alok K. Verma Jan 2007

Stochastic Models For Enhancing Agility Of Supply Chains, Alok K. Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

This paper deals with the application of stochastic inventory model to the three-tier supply chain and verifying the values obtained by mathematical model with discrete event simulation. We investigate three-stage serial supply chain with stochastic demand and fixed replenishment lead-time. Inventory holding costs are charged at each stage, and each stage may incur a consumer backorder penalty cost charged by primary supplier to secondary supplier. The customer-demand follows Poisson distribution. We implement Base Stock model for inventory control at both suppliers. Computer simulation is then designed in such a way that it satisfied all the assumptions for mathematical model. Simulation …

Multi-Phase Flow Analysis In Oil And Gas Engineering Systems And Its Modelling, Orlando F. Ayala, Luis F. Ayala, Orlando M. Ayala

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

[Introduction] Two-phase flow is very common in industrial processes and its applications were already in use in ages as remote as the era of Archimedes. At the present time, many industrial processes rely on multi-phase phenomena for the transport of energy and mass or for material processing. During the last century, the nuclear, chemical and petroleum industries propelled intense research activity in the area. Their efforts have been aimed at the demystification of the mechanisms taking place during this complex flow situation.

Katrina, Rita, Challenger And Columbia: Operationalizing A Knowledge Analytic In Nasa And Dhs Crises, Terence Garrett

Political Science Faculty Publications

The knowledge analytic is based on the reality of organizations that are clearly defined by the people who inhabit them: executives, managers, and workers. Each level of the organization possesses people who have a way of knowing how to do their work. Problems in organizations arise when there is conflict, or incompatibility, of knowledges (plural). Hummel (2006) submits that those at the higher echelons of the organization, the executives, use numbers as power over subordinates. Problems are accentuated with the problem of “forced commensurability” where numbers become more real to the organization than the actual work experienced by the employees …

Integrating Semantic Templates With Decision Tree For Image Semantic Learning, Ying Liu, Dengsheng Zhang, Guojun Lu, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Decision tree (DT) has great potential in image semantic learning due to its simplicity in implementation and its robustness to incomplete and noisy data. Decision tree learning naturally requires the input attributes to be nominal (discrete). However, proper discretization of continuous-valued image features is a difficult task. In this paper, we present a decision tree based image semantic learning method, which avoids the difficult image feature discretization problem by making use of semantic template (ST) defined for each concept in our database. A ST is the representative feature of a concept, generated from the low-level features of a collection of …
