Optimization Of Biomathematical Model Predictions For Cognitive Performance Impairment In Individuals: Accounting For Unknown Traits And Uncertain States In Homeostatic And Circadian Processes, Hans P. A. Van Dongen, Christopher G. Mott, Jen-Kuang Huang, Daniel J. Mollicone, Frederic D. Mckenzie, David F. Dinges

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Current biomathematical models of fatigue and performance do not accurately predict cognitive performance for individuals with a priori unknown degrees of trait vulnerability to sleep loss, do not predict performance reliably when initial conditions are uncertain, and do not yield statistically valid estimates of prediction accuracy, These limitations diminish their usefulness for predicting the performance of individuals in operational environments. To overcome these 3 limitations, a novel modeling approach was developed, based on the expansion of a statistical technique called Bayesian forecasting. The expanded Bayesian forecasting procedure was implemented in the two-process model of sleep regulation, which has been used …

An Evaluation Of Omg Sysml 1.0a Standard Conformance Between Modelling Tools, Andrew James Campbell Jan 2007

An Evaluation Of Omg Sysml 1.0a Standard Conformance Between Modelling Tools, Andrew James Campbell

Theses : Honours

The SysML is a recent introduction to modelling languages for the systems engineering domain. Modelling tools are offering support for its notation. Studies related to the UML have indicated that modelling tools lack compliance to the UML language. This issue may apply equally to the SysML and the aim of this research is to investigate that language compliance issue. The first phase of this research is concerned with the compliance of current modelling tools to the SysML l.0a Final Adopted Specification (PAS). It consists of a comparative evaluation of candidate tools based on an ideal framework derived from the language …

A Delphi Study: Expanding K-12 Student Knowledge And Interests In Aviation/Aerospace Recommendations From Nasa Aerospace Education Specialists, Dovie M. Brown, Mary N. Kutz, Timm Bliss

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

An aging aerospace workforce coupled with declining student interest and skills beginning at the secondary level and running through the doctoral level has prompted a potential crisis in the aviation/aerospace industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that 54 percent of U.S. aerospace workers over age 45 will leave the field by 2008 opening up some six million aerospace jobs. If the existing trends continue, there will not be enough workers to fill those positions which are vital to the U.S. economy and security. Aerospace employment is at its lowest in 50 years (Aerospace Industries Association, 2004). Data from the …

The Effects Of Pedagogical Paradigms On Aviation Students With Hazardous Attitudes, Michael Wetmore, Chien-Tsung Lu, William Caldwell Jan 2007

The Effects Of Pedagogical Paradigms On Aviation Students With Hazardous Attitudes, Michael Wetmore, Chien-Tsung Lu, William Caldwell

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Hazardous attitudes can adversely affect a pilot's judgment and thus impact the safety of a flight (FAA, 1991). These hazardous attitudes are antiauthority; impulsivity; invulnerability; macho; and, resignation. Wetmore & Lu (in-press) found hazardous attitudes to be a causal or contributing factor in 86% of the general aviation accidents involving a fatality. This study reviews certain fundamental tenets and belief systems for each of the major traditional and modern educational philosophies, ideologies and theories. A qualitative determination was made that many of the pedagogies that permeate our educational system have tenets and beliefs can actually exacerbate rather than ameliorate hazardous …

Observation Of Microslip Dynamics At High-Speed Microcontacts, Brian Borovsky, Adam M. Booth, Erin Manlove Jan 2007

Observation Of Microslip Dynamics At High-Speed Microcontacts, Brian Borovsky, Adam M. Booth, Erin Manlove

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The high-speed tribological properties of microscale contacts are studied using an indenter probe and quartz crystal microbalance. Elastic and dissipative shear forces are monitored as a function of contact radius for sapphire/gold interfaces with an adsorbed octadecanethiol monolayer. We observe shear force transitions understood as taking the interface from slipping to stuck conditions. We relate this behavior to the presence of interfacial microslip. Dynamic modeling shows that our observations are consistent with an interface that, when sliding, experiences full slip during half of each cycle. We discuss the implications for this technique as a sensitive probe of sliding friction.

Durable Consumption And The Life Cycle Permanent Income Hypothesis: Evidence From Survey Data., Chaiwuth Tangsomchai Jan 2007

Durable Consumption And The Life Cycle Permanent Income Hypothesis: Evidence From Survey Data., Chaiwuth Tangsomchai

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation uses the survey data from the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) and the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) to test the Life Cycle Permanent Income Hypothesis (LCPI) as it applies to the consumption of durable goods. To measure durable consumption services (“durable consumption,” for short) housing and vehicle consumption data are employed. We find that households mostly behave as implied by the LCPI Hypothesis, although they consume from their permanent income somewhat less than what the strict LCPI Hypothesis predicts. We also incorporate the effect of household financial constraints, which have previously been shown to have …

Perception Of Students With Disabilities: An Assessment Of Attitudes Held By Pre-Service Teachers., Suzanne Gosden Kitchen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explored the attitudes pre-service teachers held toward people with disabilities. The researcher conducted a survey methodology study via questionnaire of repeated measures design, using the respondents as their own controls. The goal of this study was to find out if pre-service teachers attitudes toward people with disabilities were affected by descriptive labels such as physicaldisability or mental disability. In other words, did the type of disability affect the pre-service teachers attitudes toward that person? Findings revealed that pre-service teachers had a more negative attitude toward people labeled with mental disabilities, and a more positive attitude toward people labeled …

Coating Uniformity On A Pharmaceutical Tablet: An Experimental Study And Finite Volume Modeling Of Droplet Impact Behavior., Ku Zilati Ku Shaari Jan 2007

Coating Uniformity On A Pharmaceutical Tablet: An Experimental Study And Finite Volume Modeling Of Droplet Impact Behavior., Ku Zilati Ku Shaari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The behavior of a single liquid droplet impacting a solid surface is a complex phenomenon and is a basic component of various industrial processes. One such process is the film coating process in the pharmaceutical industry, where coating uniformity is important especially if the coating is for functional purposes. Coating variability on a tablet could be affected by several factors, one of which is the impingement of droplets on its surface. The spreading behavior of a droplet on a solid surface was reported to be affected by the surface properties, particularly the surface roughness. To understand these phenomena completely, a …

Participatory Gis Approaches To Environmental Impact Assessment: A Case Study Of The Appalachian Corridor H Transportation Project., Ram Alagan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation explores the strengths and weaknesses of Participatory Geographic Information System (PGIS) approaches to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) with a specific focus on the potential contribution of Geo-visualization (GVIS) in this process. The approach draws heavily on concepts developed under the broad umbrella of GIS and Society and Critical GIS. PGIS recognizes the political economy of GIS in terms of data access, data representation, structural knowledge distortion, and community empowerment as being legitimate and significant issues in the application of GIS in community projects. EIA has been adopted as one of several important environmental practices that seek to engage …

An Investigation Of Student Characteristics' Influence On Retention At A Two-Year Proprietary Career College., Lisa Boice Jan 2007

An Investigation Of Student Characteristics' Influence On Retention At A Two-Year Proprietary Career College., Lisa Boice

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many students who enroll in higher education fail to complete their credential. This is especially true for students enrolled in two-year proprietary colleges where almost half leave without meeting their educational goals. Students at these institutions are largely underprepared and mostly nontraditional; their attrition has dire consequences for not only their own success, but that of society as well. Because most two-year students who drop out of college do so in their first year, early identification and intervention strategies are critical for student accomplishment and graduation. The purpose of the study was to uncover key retention issues that students face …

Such integration enables law enforcement agencies to track crime from occurrences to conviction. It is anticipated that data mining methods will assist …

A Hybrid Approach To Expert And Model Based Effort Estimation., Daniel Ryan Baker Jan 2007

A Hybrid Approach To Expert And Model Based Effort Estimation., Daniel Ryan Baker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is important to have a good cost estimate in order to budget a new project. Unfortunately, software effort estimation methods are often inaccurate. Molokken and Jorgensen report that 60-80% of the time a software project will overrun its estimate by an average of 30% [98]. Furthermore, most estimates do not describe the uncertainty of the estimate [52,54,118]. In addition, each source of uncertainty, as described by Kitchenham and Linkman [68], has yet to be represented. In this thesis, the design principles of an effort estimation tool called 2CEE are discussed. This tool is currently being deployed at NASA’s Jet …

Correlation Of Electrical And Optical Properties Of Cadmium Germanium Arsenide., Chunchuan Xu Jan 2007

Correlation Of Electrical And Optical Properties Of Cadmium Germanium Arsenide., Chunchuan Xu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As a nonlinear optical material, CdGeAs2 can be used in frequency conversion applications in the infrared. This work is going to explain the details of optical properties by using Hall effect measurements. The temperature dependent Hall effect measurements were conducted on about 100 CdGeAs 2 bulk samples which were grown by the horizontal gradient freeze technique. The Hall data were fitted to extract the electrical parameters acceptor concentration, donor concentration, activation energy and mobility ratio. Correlations between Hall data and both absorption and photoluminescence data were determined. These data consistently support the defect model that has one shallow donor, one …

Essay 2: Does Institutional Quality Matter For Investment And Capital Mobility? Evidence From Sub -Saharan Africa. Essay 3: Do Donors Care About Declining Trade Revenue From Liberalization? An Analysis Of Aid Allocation. (With Subhayu Bandyopadhyay)., Javed Younas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Essay 1: Motivation for bilateral aid allocation: Altruism or trade benefits. This paper argues that bilateral aid from developed OECD countries is disproportionately allocated to recipient nations who have a greater tendency to import goods in which donor nations have a comparative advantage in production. The estimates indicate that a substantially larger amount of aid per capita is provided to recipients who import capital goods, while imports by other category groups have no significant effects. Given that developed donor nations are major producers and exporters of capital goods, this result at least partially supports their trade benefits motive. On the …

Response And Time Allocation On Concurrent Variable -Interval Schedules Of Signaled And Unsignaled Reinforcement, Jeffrey Everly Jan 2007

Response And Time Allocation On Concurrent Variable -Interval Schedules Of Signaled And Unsignaled Reinforcement, Jeffrey Everly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present experiments were designed to evaluate accounts of how behavior is allocated on concurrent variable-interval (VI) VI schedules. The generalized matching law assumes that the proportion of behavior allocated to the two schedules will match the proportion of reinforcers obtained on the two schedules (Baum, 1974). An alternate view holds that under ideal conditions, behavior should "fix" almost exclusively at the richer schedule. The leaner schedule is only visited, or "sampled", when a reinforcer becomes available on that schedule (Houston & McNamara, 1981). Attempts were made to create optimal conditions for producing an ideal fix-and-sample response pattern. Pigeons were …

Distributed Resource Participation In Local Balancing Energy Markets, Judith Cardell Jan 2007

Distributed Resource Participation In Local Balancing Energy Markets, Judith Cardell

Engineering: Faculty Publications

In response to the new and potentially conflicting economic and technical demands of independent, distributed resources, the power system requires a new means for coordinating system and market operations. Price signals are one mechanism available to coordinate the operation of a power system in the emerging competitive markets. This paper discusses the integration of distributed resources into the operations of the power system by means of organizing the resources into microgrids and allowing them to participate in local electricity markets through responding to price signals. The simulations of price signals proposed in this paper successively expand upon the current open …

Differential cross sections for the reaction 𝛾p→ K*0Σ+ are presented in the photon energy range of 1.7 to 3.0 GeV. The K*0 was detected by its decay products, K+π−, in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility's large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These data are the first K*0 photoproduction cross sections ever published over a broad range of angles. Comparison with a theoretical model based on the vector and tensor K∗-quark couplings shows good agreement with the data, except at forward angles, suggesting that …

The cross section and decay angular distributions for the coherent ɸ-meson photoproduction on the deuteron have been measured for the first time up to a squared four-momentum transfer t = (pᵧ - pɸ)2 =-2 GeV2/c2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The cross sections are compared with predictions from a rescattering model. In a framework of vector meson dominance, the data are consistent with the total ɸ-N cross section σɸN at about 10 mb. If vector meson dominance is violated, a larger σɸN is possible by introducing a …

Quark Contribution To The Small-𝔁 Evolution Of Color Dipole, Ian Balitsky Jan 2007

Quark Contribution To The Small-𝔁 Evolution Of Color Dipole, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

The small-𝔁 deep inelastic scattering in the saturation region is governed by the nonlinear evolution of Wilson-lines operators. In the leading logarithmic approximation it is given by the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation for the evolution of color dipoles. In the next-to-leading order (NLO) the nonlinear equation gets contributions from quark and gluon loops. In this paper I calculate the quark-loop contribution to small-𝔁 evolution of Wilson lines in the NLO. It turns out that there are no new operators at the one-loop level—just as at the tree level, the high-energy scattering can be described in terms of Wilson lines. In addition, …

Elementary Reactions Involved In Pollutant-Forming Mechanisms, Cheri Ann Mcferrin Jan 2007

Elementary Reactions Involved In Pollutant-Forming Mechanisms, Cheri Ann Mcferrin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The reactions of the hydroxyl radical (OH) with molecular chlorine (Reaction 1), methane (Reaction 2), and propane (Reaction 3) have been studied experimentally using a pulsed laser photolysis/pulsed-laser-induced fluorescence technique over wide ranges of temperatures (297-826, 298-1009, and 296-908 K, respectively) and at pressures between 6.68 and 24.15 kPascals. The rate coefficients for these reactions exhibit no dependence on pressure and exhibit positive temperature dependences that can be represented with modified three-parameter Arrhenius expressions within their corresponding temperature ranges: k1 = 3.59 x 10-16T1.35exp(-745K/T)cm3molecule-1sec-1, k2 = 3.82 x 10-19T2.38 exp(-1136K/T)cm3molecule-1sec-1, and k3 = 6.64 x 10-16T1.46 exp(-271K/T)cm3molecule-1sec-1. For the OH …

The Application Of Controlled Radical Polymerization Processes On The Graft Copolymerization Of Hydrophobic Substituents Onto Guar Gum And Guar Gum Derivatives, Veronica Holmes Jan 2007

The Application Of Controlled Radical Polymerization Processes On The Graft Copolymerization Of Hydrophobic Substituents Onto Guar Gum And Guar Gum Derivatives, Veronica Holmes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Guar gum is a naturally occurring polysaccharide; guar gum and its derivatives, such as carboxymethyl guar gum (CMG) are widely used in the oil and gas industry. A hydraulic fracturing fluid for rock formations to enhance oil recovery (EOR) is comprised of viscosifier, gelled CMG, and sand particles (proppants). The gel is mixed with proppant (sand) and pumped at high rate and high pressure into an oil/gas well to the hydrocarbon-producing zone. The applied pressure will force the rock formation to fracture allowing entry of the guar gel/sand mixture. The mixture then fills the resultant fracture. The viscosity of the …
