George Frederick Wright And The Harmony Of Science And Revelation, Peter Sachs Collopy Jan 2007

George Frederick Wright And The Harmony Of Science And Revelation, Peter Sachs Collopy

Honors Papers

George Frederick Wright was an Oberlin-educated theologian and self-taught geologist who lived from 1838 to 1921. He was among the most influential Christian interpreters of Darwinism as Americans began to debate the theory in the 1870s and 1880s. In his writings, Wright illustrated a method for reconciling evolutionary theory with Christianity. Wright himself was a Calvinist, and he argued that his own conservative theological tradition shared important characteristics with Darwinism. At the turn of the century, however, Wright began to criticize both Darwinism in particular and evolutionary thought generally. A decade later, he was among the authors of a series …

Income Inequality And The Probability Of Violent Revolt, Noah Cecil Jan 2007

Income Inequality And The Probability Of Violent Revolt, Noah Cecil

Honors Papers

This paper examines the effect of income inequality on the impetus of an organized dissident group to initiate a "revolt" in an attempt to wrest power from the government regionally or countrywide. After suggesting alterations and extensions of a mathematical framework developed by Blomberg, Hess, and Weerapana (2004) income inequality, economic growth, urbanization, and political rights data from 102 countries from 1972-1999 are used to determine their respective influences on the likelihood of a revolt being initiated in a given year. Income inequality as measured by the Gini coefficient is found to be statistically significant in determining the likelihood of …

The Physics Of Fourth Amendment Privacy Rights, Omar Saleem Jan 2007

The Physics Of Fourth Amendment Privacy Rights, Omar Saleem

Journal Publications

Einstein's esteem for theoretical physics and Dostoyevsky serve as a conduit for this article's discussion about the similarities between the evolution of theoretical physics and the criminal process related to Fourth Amendment privacy rights. Part I of this Article demonstrates that law and science share traits of rationality, a quest for universality, and theoretical evolution. Part II traces the parallel paths of Fourth Amendment privacy rights and theoretical physics. Part III illustrates the radical alterations in theoretical physics created by Einstein's relativity discoveries and the radical alterations in Fourth Amendment privacy rights created by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in …

Stereotype Threat: An Intervention With A Focus On Attribution Theory And Group Composition, Megan Frost Jan 2007

Stereotype Threat: An Intervention With A Focus On Attribution Theory And Group Composition, Megan Frost

Open Access Master's Theses

When females are in a situation which is high in stereotype threat, they underperform on math tasks in comparison to males. Stereotype threat intervention research has found several methods for improving performance, such as allowing the female participants to attribute potential failure to an external source. This study aimed to replicate the results of a teaching intervention study which consisted of informing participants about stereotype threat, and asking that they attribute any stereotype threat-related anxiety to stereotype threat, and to deter it from interfering with their performance on a math task. Based on the research by Inzlicht and Ben-Zeev (2000), …

Improvement Of Current Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Systems Utilizing Practices From Outside Industries, Cyrus D. Agarabi

Open Access Master's Theses

Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP' s) were developed to keep the public safe and ensure quality products. Technological evolution of the industry resulted in cGMP requirements which could not keep pace, and ultimately had a restrictive effect on daily operations and process improvements for pharmaceutical manufacturers. In response, the FDA has recently released new Guidances for Industry, PAT-A Framework for Innovative Pharmaceutical Development, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance and Pharmaceutical cGMP's for the 21st Century-A Risk-Based Approach, to encourage innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. The current focus is to understand the product, the manufacturing process and operations rather than the previous …

Parameterized Total Cross Sections For Pion Production In Nuclear Collisions, John W. Norbury, Lawrence W. Townsend Jan 2007

Parameterized Total Cross Sections For Pion Production In Nuclear Collisions, John W. Norbury, Lawrence W. Townsend

Faculty Publications

Total inclusive cross sections for neutral and charged pion production in proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus reactions have been calculated and compared to experiment. Nucleon–nucleon theoretical cross sections have been scaled up to nuclear collisions using a scaling factor similar to (APAT)2/3, where AP and AT are the nucleon numbers of the projectile and target nuclei. Variations in the power of this scaling factor have been studied and a good fit to experiment is obtained with a small modification of the power. Theoretical cross sections are written in a form that is very …

Reactivity And Sintering Kinetics Of Au/Tio2(110) Model Catalysts: Particle Size Effects, Stephen C. Parker, Charles T. Campbell Jan 2007

Reactivity And Sintering Kinetics Of Au/Tio2(110) Model Catalysts: Particle Size Effects, Stephen C. Parker, Charles T. Campbell

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

We review here our studies of the reactivity and sintering kinetics of model catalysts consisting of gold nanoparticles dispersed on TiO2(110). First, the nucleation and growth of vapor-deposited gold on this surface was experimentally examined using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and low energy ion scattering. Gold initially grows as two-dimensional islands up to a critical coverage, hcr, after which 3D gold nanoparticles grow. The results at different temperatures are fitted well with a kinetic model, which includes various energetic parameters for Au adatom migration. Oxygen was dosed onto the resulting gold nanoparticles using a hot filament technique. The desorption energy of …

Coherent Bayesian Inference On Compact Binary Inspirals Using A Network Of Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors, Christian R¨Over, Renate Meyer, Nelson Christensen Jan 2007

Coherent Bayesian Inference On Compact Binary Inspirals Using A Network Of Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors, Christian R¨Over, Renate Meyer, Nelson Christensen

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

Presented in this paper is the description of a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) routine for conducting coherent parameter estimation for interferometric gravitational wave observations of an inspiral of binary compact objects using multiple detectors. Data from several interferometers are processed, and all nine parameters (ignoring spin) associated with the binary system are inferred, including the distance to the source, the masses, and the location on the sky. The data is matched with time-domain inspiral templates that are 2.5 post-Newtonian (PN) in phase and 2.0 PN in amplitude. We designed and tuned an MCMC sampler so that it is able …

Restricted Colored Permutations And Chebyshev Polynomials, Eric S. Egge Jan 2007

Restricted Colored Permutations And Chebyshev Polynomials, Eric S. Egge

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Work

Several authors have examined connections between restricted permutations and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. In this paper we prove analogues of these results for colored permutations. First we define a distinguished set of length two and length three patterns, which contains only 312 when just one color is used. Then we give a recursive procedure for computing the generating function for the colored permutations which avoid this distinguished set and any set of additional patterns, which we use to find a new set of signed permutations counted by the Catalan numbers and a new set of signed permutations counted …

Determinants Of Young Adult Poverty: A Zip Code Level Analysis, Kaustav Misra Jan 2007

Determinants Of Young Adult Poverty: A Zip Code Level Analysis, Kaustav Misra

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The war on poverty started in America in the early 1960s, and the poverty rate of 22.4 percent in the year 1959 decreased to 11.1 percent in 1973. Regrettably, this war did not last long enough, as poverty rate increased to 15.1 percent in 1993. In the year 2000 the US poverty rate declined, but always stayed above 11.1 percent. Kentucky also did not achieve success in this poverty war, and it resulted in growing numbers of poor people. Analysis of poverty has always aroused the interest of economists, sociologists and policy makers. Goal of this paper is to intricate …

Approximate Analysis Of Re-Entrant Lines With Bernoulli Reliability Models, Chong Wang Jan 2007

Approximate Analysis Of Re-Entrant Lines With Bernoulli Reliability Models, Chong Wang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Re-entrant lines are widely used in many manufacturing systems, such as semiconductor, electronics, etc. However, the performance analysis of re-entrant lines is largely unexplored due to its complexity. In this thesis, we present iterative procedures to approximate the production rate of re-entrant lines with Bernoulli reliability of machines. The convergence of the algorithms, uniqueness of the solution, and structural properties, have been proved analytically. The accuracy of the procedures is investigated numerically. It is shown that the approaches developed can either provide a lower bound or a closed estimate of the system production rate. Finally, a case study of automotive …

Laws Against Bubbles: An Experimental-Asset-Market Approach To Analyzing Financial Regulation, Erik F. Gerding Jan 2007

Laws Against Bubbles: An Experimental-Asset-Market Approach To Analyzing Financial Regulation, Erik F. Gerding

Publications

This article analyzes the effectiveness of proposed and actual securities, financial, and tax laws designed to prevent, or dampen the severity of asset price bubbles, including laws designed to mitigate excessive speculation. The article employs experimental asset market research to measure the effectiveness of these anti-bubble laws in correcting mispricings. Experimental asset markets represent complex simulations of stock markets in which subjects trade securities over a computer network. These markets allow scholars to test causal links between legal policies and market effects in ways that empirical research alone cannot. With these virtual markets, researchers can identify asset price bubbles - …

Being And Becoming: The Heart Of Teacher Education, Bev Norsworthy Jan 2007

Being And Becoming: The Heart Of Teacher Education, Bev Norsworthy

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Teacher education is of critical concern to a nation’s well-being. Scripture clearly identifies that the predominant narratives in a nation’s education are directly linked to its citizen’s behaviour (e.g., see Psalm 78, Judges 2). Literature which claims that teacher education has little influence on beliefs that pre-service teachers bring to their initial teacher education may unnerve Christian teacher educators who seek to equip teachers to make a difference in the lives of children and parents in a nation (Berry, 2004; Fletcher, 1997; Hatton & Smith, 1995; Lowery, 2003). For example, Berry (2004, p. 1302) observes that:

There is little doubt …

Firearm Identification With Hierarchical Neural Networks By Analyzing The Firing Pin Images Retrieved From Cartridge Cases, Dongguang Li Jan 2007

Firearm Identification With Hierarchical Neural Networks By Analyzing The Firing Pin Images Retrieved From Cartridge Cases, Dongguang Li

Research outputs pre 2011

When a gun is fired, characteristic markings on the cartridge and projectile of a bullet are produced. Over thirty different features can be distinguished from observing these marks, which in combination produce a "fingerprint" for identification of a firearm. ln this paper, through the use of hierarchial neural networks a firearm identification system based on cartridge case images is proposed. We focus on the cartridge case identification of rim-fire mechanism. Experiments show that the model proposed has high performance and robustness by integrating two levels Self- Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) neural networks and the decision-making strategy. This model will also …
