"Does Your Throat Hurt More In The Morning Or Throughout The Day?" "Yes.": Intercultural Medical Discourse, Sarah Elizabeth May

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

An increasing number of immigrants to the United States do not use English as their first, or even second, language. Members of the medical community who treats such patients often do not speak the range of home languages of their patients. As a result of the absence of a common language, many patients are forced to communicate the best they can with their physicians in English. This study focuses the interactions of non-native English speaking patients with their doctors when interpreters were unavailable. Interactions between health care providers and non-native English speaking patients at a university health clinic were videotaped …

Dismantling The Master's House : Deconstructing The Roots Of Antiblack Racism And The Construction Of The "Other" In Judaism, Christianity And Islam., John Chenault

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This critical inquiry into the social constructions of "black" and "white" identities analyzes the roles of the three "western" monotheisms (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) in the cognitive and sociohistorical developments of racial slavery and antiblack racism. Specifically, it investigates the sociohistorical consequences of the inherent dualisms of the "western" monotheisms and how those dualisms are expressed in the production of social theories and systems that rely on believer/non-believer oppositions and binaries defined by a Manichaean view of the universe and a teleological conception of history that fosters and sustains an eternal holy war against infidels. What emerges from this analysis …

Gateshead Revisited: Perceptual Simulators And Fields Of Meaning In The Analysis Of Metaphors, L. David Ritchie Dec 2007

Gateshead Revisited: Perceptual Simulators And Fields Of Meaning In The Analysis Of Metaphors, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an extension and partial reformulation of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), Ritchie (2003, 2004, 2006) proposed that the linguistic expressions cited as evidence of complex conceptual metaphors can be parsimoniously interpreted in terms of perceptual simulators (Barsalou, 1999), often within extended fields of meaning, which may be but are not necessarily anchored in underlying conceptual metaphors. Cameron (2003, 2007) added substance and precision to the focal concept of communicative context, and showed how metaphors can be analyzed both as part of an overall pattern of figurative language in a communicative event. In this essay a series of …

Casual Carpooling-Enhanced, Kalon L. Kelly Dec 2007

Casual Carpooling-Enhanced, Kalon L. Kelly

Journal of Public Transportation

Casual carpooling currently functions in environments where, because there is an HOV lane, riders and passengers join together to gain access to that lane. In this article, technology is introduced that will allow casual carpooling to function in areas without HOV lanes by providing an administrative system that records actual carpooling behavior so that incentives other than access to an HOV lane can be made available. This technology also addresses some of the current shortcomings associated with casual carpooling such as personal safety, the “free rider” problem, and the disincentive to maximize the number of passengers sharing a ride. The …

In capturing the memories, perceptions, and lived experiences of these women over thirty years later, the journey into a world of divergences was explored--divergent language codes, divergent social, cultural, and economic stratifications, and divergent linguistic expectations, …

English And French Speakers' Perception Of Voicing Distinctions In Non-Native Lateral Consonant Syllable Onsets, Catherine T. Best, Pierre A. Hallé, Jennifer Pardo Dec 2007

English And French Speakers' Perception Of Voicing Distinctions In Non-Native Lateral Consonant Syllable Onsets, Catherine T. Best, Pierre A. Hallé, Jennifer Pardo

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

English and French listeners were tested on discrimination and open-response categorization of laryngeal contrasts in three non-native syllable onsets differing in gestural complexity, in particular in the phasing between laryngeal and supra-laryngeal articulations. All onsets involved a lateral, which was combined with a coronal stop in two contrasts. Results support the view that syllable onsets are perceived as holistic articulatory patterns, in which voicing is more difficult to perceive separately as gestural complexity of the onset increases.

Terrorism As An Intellectual Problem, Charles W. Collier Dec 2007

Terrorism As An Intellectual Problem, Charles W. Collier

But it is also an intellectual problem, one with particular implications for the study of law, culture, and history. This Essay examines the intellectual assumptions of religious terrorism, and it does so from three distinct perspectives: the theory of religion and American constitutional law (Part I); the common law (Part II); …

Deal Or No Deal: Reinterpreting The Fcc's Foreign Ownership Rules For A Fair Game, Cindy J. Cho

Federal Communications Law Journal

With the changing racial and linguistic composition of the American market and the emerging strength of the Mexican market, American broadcast companies are facing a new competitive playing field.. Section 310 of the Communications Act of 1934 ("Act") establishes the guidelines for when a foreign national is eligible to apply for a broadcast license from the FCC. The FCC currently interprets these limits on foreign ownership very leniently, favoring a policy of deregulation in an attempt to further open up the United States market. This Note argues that once foreign nationals have cleared the hurdle of § 310's foreign ownership …
