Acculturation, Gender, And Alcohol Use Among Mexican American College Students, Marcela Raffaelli, Rosalie A. Torres Stone, Maria I. Iturbide, Meredith Mcginley, Gustavo Carlo, Lisa J. Crockett
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Prior research with non-college samples of Mexican Americans has demonstrated that gender moderates the association between acculturation and alcohol use. We replicated this finding in a college student sample and attempted to account for the differential impact of acculturation on Mexican American men and women by examining the mediating effects of social context, family conflict and psychological functioning. Participants were 148 Mexican Americans (67% female; M age 23 years) from three state universities in California and Texas who completed self-report surveys. In multivariate analyses controlling for age, maternal education, living situation, and site, linguistic acculturation was associated with increased alcohol …

Envisioning The Constitution, Thomas P. Crocker
Envisioning The Constitution, Thomas P. Crocker
Faculty Publications
If one of the more persistent problems of constitutional interpretation, particularly of the Bill of Rights, is that we lack a clear view of it, then it would appear that how we see the Constitution is as important as how we read it. What clauses we see as connected in order to form comprehensive values, such as federalism or rights protections, are not so much products of constitutional interpretation as constitutional vision. To obtain a view of the Constitution, we have to do more than derive semantic meaning from diverse articles and clauses. To have a vision of the Constitution …
From Postmodernism To Post-Tradition: The End Of Theory In The Age Of Global Conservatism, Said Graiouid
From Postmodernism To Post-Tradition: The End Of Theory In The Age Of Global Conservatism, Said Graiouid
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This paper explores possible routes of reflecting on non-Western forms of social organization. Taking Morocco as its central site of study, the paper argues that fixed conceptual interpretations cannot provide a constructive understanding of a societal organization in a state of flux. The geographical position of Morocco at the tip of the Mediterranean rim and the country's geopolitical role as a mediator between the West and the Orient create a push and pull social dynamics which has generated conflicts, contradictions but also openings and possibilities. The paper proposes the concept "post-tradition" as a possible theoretical and methodological framework within and …

Is Inclusion Beneficial In The General Educational Classroom?, Stephanie Schubmehl
Is Inclusion Beneficial In The General Educational Classroom?, Stephanie Schubmehl
Education Masters
There are many different types of classrooms in schools today. With more and more children entering schools, the need for different types of classrooms has changed. There are people who feel as though separating students based on educational need is not beneficial. They believe that every child should have an equal chance of success. This can either be accomplished by separating students with special needs or keeping them included in the general education classroom. In an inclusive setting, students are educated in the general education classroom. There are usually less students with more teacher assistance. People are either for or …

Aboriginal Rights. And The Atlantic Canada Petroleum Industry, David Reid, Stephanie Hickman
Dalhousie Law Journal
The authors explore the recent developments in Aboriginal law and their implications for the petroleum industry in Atlantic Canada. To set the stage, they provide a brief historical overview of Aboriginal settlement and land-use in the region, followed by a brief review of the petroleum industry's development in Atlantic Canada. After examining the state of the jurisprudence relating to Aboriginal rights generally, the authors turn to the current state of aboriginalrights, rights claims, and consultation obligations in the Atlantic Canadian context. The impact of the current state of the law on the petroleum industry is then analyzed and future trends outlined.

The Failure Of The United Nations Convention On Contracts For The International Sale Of Goods And A Proposal For A New Uniform Global Code In International Sales Law, Christopher Sheaffer
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note critiques the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) for failing to achieve its goal of creating a uniform international sales law due to ambiguities, inconsistent judicial interpretations, and language discrepancies. It proposes the development of a new Global Code to address these shortcomings, emphasizing the need for clearer guidelines, a unified interpretation framework, and mechanisms to ensure consistency across jurisdictions.

Impact Of Culture On International Business Negotiation: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Taiwan, Hong Kong, And Mainland China, Jung-Tsung Tu
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Each year international business amounts to more than $1 trillion U.S. dollars (WTO, 2005). Both foreign investment and international trade are growing substantially, causing increasing interdependence of national economies as well as furthering the globalization of companies. Presently, Greater China's economy holds an increasingly large influence on the world. Despite the enthusiasm for increased economic exchange, many people have found that cultural differences have hindered their ability to efficiently conduct business due to their lack of understanding of the cultural differences among Chinese citizens living in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. People engaged in the negotiations of agreements in …

OBJECTIVES: To examine the allele frequencies of HumFABP2 locus in 155 individuals from different regions of Turkey. METHODS: The study was carried out in Cumhuriyet University Hospital, Sivas, Turkey, between March and June 2006. The allele and genotype frequencies for HumFABP2 were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the manufacturer9s recommended protocol, and using the commercially available Macherey-Nagel DNA isolation kit. The PCR amplification was carried out in a Perkin-Elmer GeneAmp PCR System 9600 thermal cycler following the manufacturer9s recommendations. The allele frequencies in the Turkish population was computed, and the heterozygote rate was calculated. RESULTS: In this population …

Sacred Cyborgs And 21st Century Goddesses, Katharyn Privett
Sacred Cyborgs And 21st Century Goddesses, Katharyn Privett
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The late 20th and early 21st centuries shifted significantly from their Postmodern bearings in their search for new meaning, new ideologies, and new gods. One such shift resides in the contestation of the meaning of the feminine body and its corresponding gender, or more often, the lack thereof. Feminist theories of essentialism and constructivism, after years of battle over the delegation of the sexed flesh, were reinvigorated by Donna J. Haraway's riotous cyborg trope - evidence that the argument had finally left the security of the Ivory Tower and was now up for new, albeit alien, interpretations. [1] …

Examining The Septuagint: An Exploration Of The Greek Old Testament's Unique Heritage And Lasting Impact On The New Testament, Cara Lynne Murphy
Masters Theses
The Greek Old Testament has been a focus of speculation and study since its entrance into the religious culture of the Diasporic Jews. Legends and myths surround the creation of the Septuagint, and its use by the New Testament authors only added to the questions surrounding this ancient text. The questions this thesis will seek to address are three-fold. First, what does historical evidence prove regarding the origin of the Septuagint? The dating, the location, and the nature of the Septuagint’s creation are each open debates within biblical scholarship. While this thesis will not attempt to prove conclusively the answers …

Odious, Illegitimate, Illegal, Or Legal Debts—What Difference Does It Make For International Chapter 9 Debt Arbitration?, Kunibert Raffer
Law and Contemporary Problems
Once upon a time, sovereign debts were just that-debts or the entitlement to be repaid fully, including interest. During the 1970s it was thought unnecessary to make any distinctions between debts, based on the assumption that sovereigns might possibly become illiquid, but could never become insolvent. Commercial banks disregarded the most elementary rules of prudent banking, including their duty of due diligence as lenders, laboring on the assumption that whatever flowed into developing countries would eventually flow back with fees and interest. Here, Raffer discusses the international dchapter nine debt arbitration.

Toward A Population Health Model Of Segmented Assimilation: The Case Of Low Birth Weight In Los Angeles, Brian K. Finch, Nelson Lim, William Perez, D. Phuong Do
Faculty Publications
The authors adapt the segmented assimilation theory to a model population health, which posits that assimilation is actually harmful to migrants' health. The authors also specify models of individual and contextual factors to indirectly test the theory of segmented assimilation - a theory that posits interactions between individual and residential circumstances. Using Year 2000 vital statistics data merged with 2000 U.S. census data from Los Angeles County, the authors model the probability of being born low birth weight among the native and foreign born. Results confirm an immigrant advantage at the individual level and protective effects of immigrant coresidence at …

The Legacy Of Joan Vollmer: The Short Significant Life Of A Beat Woman, Christopher Carmona
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In this thesis, I have endeavored to flesh out the life of Joan Vollmer. Joan Vollmer was an essential figure in the Beat Generation of Writers even though she never published a word. Through researching the life of Joan Vollmer, the role that she played in the creation of the Beat Generation becomes clear. Joan Vollmer is mentioned in the major Beat texts, but there is no definitive look at her life and importance. Therefore, I set out to do what no one has done and write about Joan Vollmer' s life. I have collected as many letters that still …

Simulate Me: A Study Of Computer-Mediated Communication In A Contemporary Society, Sabrina Wong
Honors College Theses
Like any forms of revolutionary technology, CMC (computer-mediated communication) has its pros and cons. Due to its extension list of advantages, CMC's many downfalls are disregarded. In this essay I will discuss that the rising dependence on CMC causes alienation from FTF (face-to-face) interaction as well as a lack of depth within their personal relationships.

In the United States today, the fastest growing populations of public school students are collectively African American and Hispanic American, and the students who immigrate to the United States from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Caribbean nations. And, at the same time, demographics are changing in our classrooms, the majority of teachers and administrators in the U. S. are White, live in the mainstream culture, and have limited cross-cultural experiences with groups other than their own. Teachers and administrators play key roles in ensuring students’ success. There is a far greater need today for teachers and …

The Awareness Of Cultural Orientations In Culturally Responsive Education For Korean American Students, Mi-Soon Lee
Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education
It is important for teachers to be aware of the cultural backgrounds of students and their family in order to provide culturally responsive instruction and counseling. Most teachers may identify Asian ethnicities due to their distinguishable physical or behavioral characteristics but they may not know how Asian Americans have changed their cultural value and legacies. To examine cultural orientation, the Korean American Acculturation Scale (KAAS), which consists of behavior and cultural value orientations, was administered to 466 Korean American students. The result indicated that the most recent generations were less behaviorally oriented to Korean culture and more disoriented to Korean …

Information Gap Activities: A Standards-Based Strategy For Promoting Oral Proficiency In A Thematic Context, Paul A. Garcia, Todd A. Hernandez
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
This article demonstrates how the sustained use of standards-driven information gap activities (IGAs) supports and enhances the development of speaking skills. In the first section, we define the IGA. We then discuss recent research showing how IGAs promote focused student-student interactions. In the third section we provide a blueprint for implementing the IGA in a standards-based thematic context. We conclude with content-based models from a thematic unit on Argentina that are appropriate for both secondary and post-secondary classrooms.
