A Qualitative Analysis Of Brigham Young University's Golden Age Theater Production And Outreach Course, Sheila Jan Barton
A Qualitative Analysis Of Brigham Young University's Golden Age Theater Production And Outreach Course, Sheila Jan Barton
Theses and Dissertations
The present research consists of a comparative study of Brigham Young University's Golden Age Comedia (GAC) and Golden Age Theater Production (GATP) courses. The two courses cover much of the same academic material, but one of the differences between the two approaches to the teaching of Golden Age literature is that the GATP course incorporates a theater production and outreach component. Although this outreach program has been seen as intuitively and anecdotally effective, there has been no prior attempt to document student motivation for choosing this course over the traditionally taught course (GAC), nor to discover any of the outcomes …

Split-Half Reliability Of Mlu And Mlu2 In Two Methods Of Utterance Segmentation, Alyse Diana Kemeny
Split-Half Reliability Of Mlu And Mlu2 In Two Methods Of Utterance Segmentation, Alyse Diana Kemeny
Theses and Dissertations
Concerns regarding Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) has led to adaptations of this method of analysis. A recent study by Johnston (2001) introduced an alternative to MLU called MLU2. The current study investigates the split-half reliability of MLU and MLU2 as well as another alternative, Median Length of Utterance (Med-LU). Split-half reliability was found for these methods when segmented into Phonological and Communication Units. Split-half reliability of MLU2 was generally higher than that of MLU, and both were higher than Med-LU. The study suggests that MLU2 may also be a valuable tool for clinicians in analyzing child language.
Psychometrically Equivalent Cantonese Bisyllabic Word Recognition Materials Spoken By Male And Female Talkers, Brooke Kristin Conklin
Psychometrically Equivalent Cantonese Bisyllabic Word Recognition Materials Spoken By Male And Female Talkers, Brooke Kristin Conklin
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to create psychometrically equivalent word lists in the language of Cantonese for word recognition testing. Frequently used bisyllabic Cantonese words were recorded by a native female and male talker. The word lists were evaluated by administering the word recognition lists to 20 native speakers of Cantonese with normal hearing. Each list was presented at 10 different intensity levels ranging from -5 to 40 dB HL in 5 dB increments. Logistic regression was used to determine the words with the steepest logistic regression slopes. The 200 words with the steepest slopes were then formulated into …

Mounted On A Pedestal: Bertha Honoré Palmer, Hope L. Black
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
The thesis Mounted on a Pedestal, chronicles the life of Bertha Honoré Palmer. The focus of her story are the years after 1910, when she traveled to Sarasota, Florida and heralded the flight to the southernmost state, leading the pack in the purchase and development of land in the Sarasota/ Tampa Bay area. The totality of her years prior to that time serve as a prelude to her accomplishments and the vicissitudes of her life in the sleepy little fishing village she found. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1849, she was provided with a privileged, comfortable childhood and a sheltered …

Interview With Edwin T. "Win" Mckeithen, Paul Hillmer
Hmong Oral History Project
Edwin “Win” McKeithen was born in Old Greenwich Connecticut. After attending Williams College for two years he quit school and joined International Voluntary Services in the Fall of 1962. Instead of being sent to Vietnam, as he expected, he went to Laos just as the Geneva Accords were going into effect. After working in the north for two years, he was reassigned to the Bolovens Plateau where he worked for another year before returning to the US to finish college. He returned to Laos to work for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in the fall of 1966, stationed …

Serving Refugee Teens: An Analysis Of The Working Relationship Between Resettlement Agencies And Public High Schools In Tucson, Arizona, Kelly L. Nafie
Capstone Collection
This study examines the relationship between high schools and refugee resettlement agencies in Tucson, Arizona. Through twenty individual and group interviews with teachers, school administrators and refugee resettlement agency staff and volunteers, elements of collaboration and communication between the entities were assessed to determine the strength of the existing relationship and its potential for development. Mattesich and Monsey’s fifteen factors of successful collaboration (1992) were used to develop research questions, and Isett’s 2005 model for interorganizational network formation was used to analyze the stage at which the current relationship between agencies and schools lies and what elements need to be …

The Relationship Between Reported Out-Of-Class English Use And Proficiency Gains In English, Denisa Krizanova Cundick
The Relationship Between Reported Out-Of-Class English Use And Proficiency Gains In English, Denisa Krizanova Cundick
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the relationship of out-of-class English use and proficiency gains. It also explored the relationship of gender, proficiency level and native language and the possible effect of these demographics on out-of-class English use and language gains in English. Though some studies have shown that those who spend more out-of-class time using the target language have higher language gain (Seliger, 1977), other studies have not found this to be true (Day, 1985; Freed 1990; Spada, 1986). Some reasons for the discrepancy in findings may be differences in the length of the time data is collected, samples of study participants …

The Impact Of Swiss Exile On An East German Critical Marxist, Axel Fair-Schulz
The Impact Of Swiss Exile On An East German Critical Marxist, Axel Fair-Schulz
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Among many East German Marxists, who had embraced Marxism in the 1930s and opted to live in East Germany after World War II (between the 1950s until the end of the GDR in 1989), was a commitment to the Communist party that was informed by a more nuanced and sophisticated Marxism than what most party bureaucrats were exposed to.
