A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of German And American Graduate Business Students, Stefanie Borst Dec 2007

A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of German And American Graduate Business Students, Stefanie Borst

Global Business Languages

This paper reports on results of a comparative assessment of MBA students at highly ranked business schools in Germany and the USA. The results from a demographic and attitude questionnaire, and the results from a reading and writing assessment are discussed, and areas of significant variation between the German and American students are highlighted. Striking differences were found in several areas, even though the German and American students were similar with respect to educational level and professional goals. Since international MBAs like these students will ultimately work with each other in the global business community, I propose that understanding these …

Miss Universe In The Land Of Missery: Ecuador's Contradictory Development Package, Isabel Dulfano Dec 2007

Miss Universe In The Land Of Missery: Ecuador's Contradictory Development Package, Isabel Dulfano

Global Business Languages

Given the wealth generated by oil reserves as well as the promise of economic recovery through dollarization, it is striking to note that the sociopolitical and economic reality of Ecuador contradicts theoretical predictions of prosperity and growth. Economics is only part of the explanation. In fact, social and cultural factors have had a dramatic impact on the current state of affairs in Ecuador. The country faces many of the challenges evident in other Latin American countries and thus serves as a microcosm of regional development issues. We examine the indigenous movement, economic crisis, rainforest preservation, migration, and other factors affecting …

Business Languages And The Use Of English In Multilingual Switzerland, Margrit Zinggeler Dec 2007

Business Languages And The Use Of English In Multilingual Switzerland, Margrit Zinggeler

Global Business Languages

Switzerland, the small, highly industrialized, neutral nation, is known for its linguistic diversity (four national languages) and international appeal for business and humanitarian organizations. This article describes the historical background of language and industrial development in Switzerland, and it examines how language use in the workplace, in school, and at home has changed over the last decades. To illustrate these changes, it uses data from the national census of 1990 and 2000 as well as academic investigations about language distribution. The main focus is on how English has become a major business language and how schools are responding to the …

The Authenticity Of Business Simulations In Esp: Implications For Materials Design, Diana Phillips, Jonathan Clifton Dec 2007

The Authenticity Of Business Simulations In Esp: Implications For Materials Design, Diana Phillips, Jonathan Clifton

Global Business Languages

In this article we set out how authentic materials for a performance appraisal simulation help MBA students—both full-time and professionals—to acquire the linguistic and management skills that they will need to carry out a practical business task. The simulation was designed for a course in Management Communication that has been taught as part of the MBA course at the University of Antwerp Management School (UAMS) and the Executive MBA courses at the University of Warsaw and the Institute of Business Studies in Moscow. The design of these materials will be explained with reference to the notion of authenticity.

Gender Disparity In Nigerian Education: Women’S Experience Of Barriers To Equal Educational Opportunity, Eugene Okoli Dec 2007

Gender Disparity In Nigerian Education: Women’S Experience Of Barriers To Equal Educational Opportunity, Eugene Okoli

Dissertations

Discrepancies between males and females in access to schooling, school completion rates, and participation in employment opportunities are still more the norm in some regions of the world than others. Limited access to education plagues women in Nigeria as well as in Sub-Saharan Africa. Disparity in access to educational opportunity is a pressing gender equity issue in Nigeria (World Bank, 2003).

Relatively few studies have focused on obtaining the viewpoints of women who experience this phenomenon. To hear the voices of these women regarding how they gained or were denied access to education in the Nigerian context, a cross-section of …

My Son, Listen To The Instruction Of Your Father : An Analysis Of How The Father’S Rhetoric In Proverbs 1-7 Continues And Climaxes In Proverbs 8-9, Samuel Hsiao-Yung Liu Dec 2007

My Son, Listen To The Instruction Of Your Father : An Analysis Of How The Father’S Rhetoric In Proverbs 1-7 Continues And Climaxes In Proverbs 8-9, Samuel Hsiao-Yung Liu

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Liu, Hsiao-Yung (Samuel) "My Son, Listen to the Instruction of Your Father: An Analysis of How the Father Rhetoric in Proverbs 1-7 Continues and Climaxes in Proverbs 8-9." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2007. 200 pp.

This dissertation proposes the thesis that the father's rhetoric in Prov 1-7 continues and climaxes in Prov 8-9, thus supporting the unity of Prov 1-9. Although diverse voices and genres make the reading of Prov 1-9 difficult, there still exists the unifying perspective of the implied speaker in the text, which is the father's rhetoric,

Therefore, assuming that one single author or editor completed the …

Beyond Foraging: Behavioral Science And The Future Of Institutional Economics, Alexander J. Field Dec 2007

Beyond Foraging: Behavioral Science And The Future Of Institutional Economics, Alexander J. Field

Economics

Institutions affect economic outcomes, but variation in them cannot be directly linked to environmental factors such as geography, climate, or technological availabilities. Game theoretic approaches, based as they typically are on foraging only assumptions, do not provide an adequate foundation for understanding the intervening role of politics and ideology; nor does the view that culture and institutions are entirely socially constructed. Understanding what institutions are and how they influence behavior requires an approach that is in part biological, focusing on cognitive and behavioral adaptations for social interaction favored in the past by group selection. These adaptations, along with their effects …

Making Meaning Of Graduate Students’ And Preservice Teachers’ E-Mail Communication In A Community Of Practice, Janet C. Richards, Susan V. Bennett, Kim T. Shea Dec 2007

Making Meaning Of Graduate Students’ And Preservice Teachers’ E-Mail Communication In A Community Of Practice, Janet C. Richards, Susan V. Bennett, Kim T. Shea

The Qualitative Report

This inquiry examined graduate students ’ and preservice teachers’ e-mail communication as they made decisions about supporting the instructional needs of children at-risk in a community of practice summer literacy camp. The correspondence gradually evolved from impersonal to interpersonal communication over a ten-week time span, and influenced the preservice teachers’ responses. S even themes were identified in the graduate students’ messages that ranged from questioning and complaining to promoting collaboration. The study illuminates the developmental stages of interpersonal relationships and demonstrates the reciprocal nature of interactive dialogue through the medium of e-mail communication. Conclusions are that long-term e-mail exchanges can …

Breaking The Be Nice Rule: Direct Action Community Organizing, Adriana Rosas Dec 2007

Breaking The Be Nice Rule: Direct Action Community Organizing, Adriana Rosas

Masters Theses

Focusing on the Kalamazoo Homeless Action Network (KHAN), this thesis explores the dynamics of transformation in community organizing, and the crucial and often complicated role of anger in that process. Current Anthropological literature on the topic of resistance and poverty leaves unexamined the micropolitics of individuals' transformation as they become civically engaged as well as the laborious organizing techniques culminating in such events that lead to social change and individual empowerment. I will contribute to the literature on poverty and resistance by examining the 'behind-the-scenes' dimensions of direct action community organizing that influence individual and social transformation. Through this examination …

Moment Of Encounter: A Critical Exploration Of Parent-School Communication, Gary Samuel Marx Dec 2007

Moment Of Encounter: A Critical Exploration Of Parent-School Communication, Gary Samuel Marx

Masters Theses

Relationships among parents and schools are situated in a complex hegemony. Communication is central to the identification and construction of power in schools. Schools employ a model of communication that locates power predominately with their representatives and values parents for conformity to organizational expectations. Shared power relationships challenge actors to encounter one another and co-contribute to the development of children. The goal of this study is to uncover various meanings and understandings from what parents recall from Moments of Encounter with school personnel. Such an examination is designed to reveal power at the microlevel, in the encounter itself, as well …

Deliberation And Dialogue In The Pracademic Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Dec 2007

Deliberation And Dialogue In The Pracademic Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

There is a strong connection between deliberation and dialogue and commons theory Deliberative activity generally takes place within group settings that approximate the defining conditions of a commons. In addition, social capital, in the form of trust and a sense of mutuality, and construction of a new or reconstituted normative outlook typically result from successful deliberation and dialogue efforts. This poses several lessons for the practice of the practice of such discussions.
