Civic And Citizenship Education In 2009 (Iccs): A Comparative Study, Wolfram Schulz, John Ainley Mar 2007

Civic And Citizenship Education In 2009 (Iccs): A Comparative Study, Wolfram Schulz, John Ainley

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

It is over the ten years since IEA last investigated civic education, and in that time new challenges have emerged in educating young people for their roles as citizens in the 21st century. These challenges have stimulated renewed reflection on the meanings of citizenship and the roles of and approaches to civic and citizenship education. In many countries there is a growing interest in using evidence to improve policy and practice in civic and citizenship education. The purpose of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake …

Estimating The Supply Of And Demand For Bilingual Nurses In Northwest Arkansas, Katherine A. Deck

Publications and Presentations

In 2004, researchers at the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) in the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas prepared a report that detailed the projected shortage of minority nurses in the four county region of Northwest Arkansas. The study focused particularly on the Hispanic residents of Northwest Arkansas, as projections showed the estimated proportion of the total population for that ethnicity increasing from 9.5 percent in 2005 to 16.0 percent in 2025. A separate set of projections in the report estimated that the proportion of the nursing workforce with Hispanic ethnicity would increase …

Controlling Racial And Religious Profiling: Article 14 Echr Protection V. U.S. Equal Protection Clause Prosecution, Aaron Baker Mar 2007

Controlling Racial And Religious Profiling: Article 14 Echr Protection V. U.S. Equal Protection Clause Prosecution, Aaron Baker

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

In light of the challenges that intelligence-led profiling poses to constitutional provisions against government discrimination, this paper discusses the extent to which, and why, Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights ("ECHR"), as applied in the U.K. through the Human Rights Act 1998 ("HRA"), has a greater potential to control such racial and religious profiling in a counter-terrorism context than does the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. My contentions are, in essence, that: (1) Article 14 has been less chipped away at by judicial manipulation of the definition of discrimination than has …

Codifying Humanity: The Legal Line Between Slave And Servant, Veronica Hendrick Mar 2007

Codifying Humanity: The Legal Line Between Slave And Servant, Veronica Hendrick

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Beloved, Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, portrays the ramifications of U.S. legal policies that codified people as either human, therefore entitled to rights, or animal, thereby allotted to the category of slave. It is this categorization that sets the action of the novel into gear. Sethe, the main character, runs from the Sweet Home farm to freedom in Ohio, where her three small children await her. After only 28 days of freedom, her owner and the local sheriff arrive to apprehend her. In response, Sethe attempts to kill her children and herself rather than return to the slave system.

Explaining Aboriginal Treaty Negotiations Outcomes In Canada: The Cases Of The Inuit And The Innu In Labrador, Christopher Alcantara Mar 2007

Explaining Aboriginal Treaty Negotiations Outcomes In Canada: The Cases Of The Inuit And The Innu In Labrador, Christopher Alcantara

Political Science Faculty Publications

From 1921 to the early 1970s, the federal government refused to negotiate any new land claims agreements with aboriginal peoples in Canada. In 1973, in Calder, a majority of the Supreme Court of Canada affirmed the existence of aboriginal title. The Court ruled that aboriginal title was not a creation of the Crown, but rather stemmed from aboriginal possession of ancestral lands from time immemorial (Macklem, 2001: 268–269). Six months after Calder, the federal government invited aboriginal groups who had not yet signed a treaty with the Crown to enter into negotiations with them under a new federal comprehensive land …

From Reading Clinic To Reading Community, Deborah Ann Jensen, Jennifer Amy Tuten Mar 2007

From Reading Clinic To Reading Community, Deborah Ann Jensen, Jennifer Amy Tuten

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This paper discusses the shift from a clinic model to a community model for the practicum experience for literacy education graduate students. The traditional program for the remediation of struggling readers followed a deficit model. Therefore, the reading specialist would pull out the child from regular classroom instruction to isolate a reading problem using standardized assessments and then to remediate the problem with programmed instruction. While the shifts in the understanding of the reading process which occurred in the 1980s and 1990s influenced instruction and assessment and the role of the reading specialist, researchers have found that instruction of struggling …

Ncssfl’S Linguafolio Project, Jacque Bott Van Houten

Dimensions

On a Goethe-Institut-sponsored trip to Germany in 2001, world language consultants (a term that has now replaced that of supervisor) of several state departments of education were so inspired by the potential for improving and recording student learning they saw in using the European Language Portfolio that they immediately set about to create a similar tool for American students. This effort resulted in the self-assessment, reflective-learning tool, LinguaFolio. Five states—Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia— are now collaborating to orient teachers to LinguaFolio and guide them in its use. The first part of this article describes the five-state …

Misperceptions Of Attitudes Toward Language Study, Carolyn Gascoigne Mar 2007

Misperceptions Of Attitudes Toward Language Study, Carolyn Gascoigne

Dimensions

This study provides a glimpse into the attitudes of current incoming college freshmen toward foreign language study and language requirements, as well as practicing teachers’ beliefs about their students’ opinions of and reasons for foreign language study. The results demonstrate that language educators tend to misdiagnose students’ attitudes and beliefs and that educators place an undue emphasis on instrumental types of motivation for foreign language study.

Representation Of Latino Culture In Introductory High School Textbooks, Patricia Thomas Mar 2007

Representation Of Latino Culture In Introductory High School Textbooks, Patricia Thomas

Dimensions

As Latinos continue to be the fastest growing racial minority group in the U.S., the many dimensions of Latino culture have become increasingly important as elements of the Spanish language curriculum. This study focuses on textbooks as a major resource in cultural instruction, examining how Latinos and Latino culture are represented in Spanish textbooks at the introductory level. In general, the Latino presence in the U.S. is presented as an important part of the Spanishspeaking world. Historical context regarding how specific Latino communities were established is sometimes limited, as is discussion of certain current economic, political, and identity issues. A …

Maya And Nahuatl In The Teaching Of Spanish: Expanding The Professional Perspective, Anne Fountain, Catherine Fountain

Dimensions

Indigenous languages of the Americas are spoken by millions of people 500 years after the initial period of European conquest. The people who speak these languages and the customs they continue to practice form a rich cultural texture in many parts of Spanish America and can be important components of an instructor’s Standards-based teaching. This article discusses the influence of Maya and Nahuatl languages and cultures on the language, literature, and history of Mexico and Central America. Examples of this influence range from lexical and phonological traits of Mexican Spanish to the indigenous cultures and worldviews conveyed in texts as …

Integrating Stories With Multimedia Into The French Language Classroom, Marat Sanatullov, Elvira Sanatullova-Allison

Dimensions

Standards, proficiency, theory and research, and instructional approaches can guide teachers in integrating stories with multimedia in a foreign language classroom, as the authors demonstrate through the adaptation of a Haitian folk story for novice and intermediate learners of French. The article also gives practical recommendations for foreign language teachers to help them effectively integrate stories with multimedia in their classrooms and introduces the PEPPrepare, Explore, and Practice–model, which defines the essential steps of the use of stories with multimedia.

Tumuge' Påpa' (Writing It Down): Chamorro Midwives And The Delivery Of Native History, Christine Taitano Delisle

Pacific Studies

This essay explores the evolving significance of the Chamorro phrase tuge' påpa'—"write it down"—as both a command and a cultural imperative in the life of a Chamorro woman and scholar. Anchored in personal history and critical scholarship, the essay examines how writing becomes a medium for engaging with, preserving, and reshaping Chamorro identity, history, and resistance in the face of colonial narratives. Drawing from research on i pattera siha—prewar Chamorro nurse-midwives trained under U.S. Naval Administration—this work blends ethnography, historiography, and family memory to challenge dominant American colonial discourse. Using the motif of “working hands,” it underscores the …

Book Review: Social Identity And Its Discontents, David Moshman Mar 2007

Book Review: Social Identity And Its Discontents, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

In 1944, a Muslim day laborer named Kader Mia was knifed while looking for work in Dhaka, Bengal, in what later became the geographically separated eastern part of Pakistan, and still later Bangladesh. His assailants were unknown to him except that they were Hindus for whom his Muslim identity was sufficient reason to kill him. Bleeding profusely, he stumbled through a gate into a garden where he asked an eleven-year-old boy for help and water. The boy called his parents and got some water, but Kader Mia later died in the hospital.

How Qualitative Research Changed Me: A Narrative Of Personal Growth, Avital Feuer

The Qualitative Report

This piece recounts personal changes I underwent while collecting data for my dissertation. Stemming from my own personal experiences of anomie and feelings of not belonging to the languages and cultures of either Canada or Israel , this inquiry examined the collusion of my attitudes with the attitudes of advanced Hebrew learners of diverse backgrounds and beliefs in a Canadian undergraduate university class. As the themes of claims and ownership of the Hebrew language emerged between clashing sub-groups in the classroom, I examined my own biases and stereotypes regarding language, and ultimately grew into a peaceful acceptance of my position …
