The Rising Cost Of Obesity In The United States, Sarah Siddiqui, Jenet George, Yesenia Camero

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent the costs of obesity have increased over the past decade within the United States. Data implies that obesity has undergone a rapid increase among the U.S. population resulting in significant escalation of health care spending. The studies reviewed focused primarily on obesity as it relates to age, race, gender, as well as the veteran population. The research focused on the effect of obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension among these groups. Studies suggest that health care intervention at an early stage can have a significant impact on …

The Formation Of A New Gadolinium Dendrimer And Its Potential Use As An Mri Contrast Agent, Karoline Korah Mar 2007

The Formation Of A New Gadolinium Dendrimer And Its Potential Use As An Mri Contrast Agent, Karoline Korah

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The search for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent that enhances the images of the body’s bloodstream, tissues, or organs is currently continued. There are several known gadolinium compounds that are used as MRI agents. The use of dendrimers as an MRI contrast agent is being investigated, but the recent focus on the applications of dendrimers allows much of the developments of research to be fairly new. This research project will involve creating a new gadolinium compound and studying the possibility of using it as an MRI contrast agent. In this research project, several compounds have been synthesized. This …

The Ballerina In The Box, Amy Harvey Mar 2007

The Ballerina In The Box, Amy Harvey

Undergraduate Student Symposium

When read for the first time, this poem seems to be about one of those beautiful little jewelry boxes little girls receive as a gift from a loved one; the kind that have a spinning plastic ballerina in them. However, at second glance the reader might notice that it is actually about the insecurities of being alone. This poem is an allegory of an experience of its author.

Recovery Of Branching Coral In Devil’S Crown, Galapagos Islands, Following El Niño Impacts, Kristen Taylor Mar 2007

Recovery Of Branching Coral In Devil’S Crown, Galapagos Islands, Following El Niño Impacts, Kristen Taylor

Undergraduate Student Symposium

In 1982-83 a severe El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event killed 95% of the scleractinian coral in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, with over 99% coral mortality reported at the study site, Devil’s Crown. Also at this site, a reef composed primarily of the branching coral Pocillopora spp. was lost from primary and secondary biological disturbances associated with ENSO. For the subsequent 11 years Pocillopora was not observed there, however 5 colonies were seen in May, 1995. The number and size of colonies was monitored from 1995-2004. Projected surface areas were determined using two methods: direct measure during snorkel surveys using a …

Revisited: A True Story, Amrish Ramnarine Mar 2007

Revisited: A True Story, Amrish Ramnarine

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The film project is based on a true story about a young boy who was kidnapped. In this film, we revisit the incident and see it in a newer light which shows both what happened and what the boy saw happened. Revisited is exactly that, a film about a boy revisiting the incident in which armed men took him for ransom for a few hours before he was rescued by the SWAT team of Trinidad. He is en route to school when two cars block his car off; they pull him into another vehicle. They knock him unconscious and shoot …

The American Psyche Of The 1900s: A Nation In Disappointments, Jany Cabezas Mar 2007

The American Psyche Of The 1900s: A Nation In Disappointments, Jany Cabezas

Undergraduate Student Symposium

There is a psychological mind frame that persists where the American dream is pursued. Disappointments are a part of American life, both in the 1900s and today. In Glaspell’s Trifles and William’s The Glass Menagerie, each character in society portrays the American Psyche and different methods to cope with disappointments. From the disillusionments of war to the unrealistic expectation of parental units, both works display issues of the psychological mind in 1900 American Literature. Multiple perspectives of coping show how the psyche reacts to lack of feminism and failed expectations; responding to the struggles is unique and defines the …

Nuclear Fuels Dominant Over Fossil Fuels?, Arthur Graber, Kim Pham, Aisha Syed Mar 2007

Nuclear Fuels Dominant Over Fossil Fuels?, Arthur Graber, Kim Pham, Aisha Syed

Undergraduate Student Symposium

With decreases in fossil fuel reserves and the resulting increases in price (especially with the war in Iraq), converting to nuclear power just may be the proper solution to this political, economical and social conundrum. Nuclear energy and fossil fuels work similarly in that they are used to heat up water into steam, which in turn pumps turbines to create electricity. However, they differ in the fuel they use to heat the water, which brings forth various disadvantages as well as advantages. Could it be possible that nuclear energy, even with its higher costs and higher risks of releasing radioactive …

The American Dream: Support The Dream Act, Myra Rafi Mar 2007

The American Dream: Support The Dream Act, Myra Rafi

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Every day, many young and eager students face barriers to obtaining a college education. They are prohibited from working, driving, and applying for the financial assistance that so many other young, soon-to-be college students can have. Unfortunately, this is the life many undocumented students lead. After graduating from high school, these students have no options for working toward the futures they have dreamt of. However, there is an option, a prospect that may help them to achieve their dreams: it is the Development Relief Education for Alien Minors Act: the DREAM Act. This bipartisan legislation was proposed by no less …

Thank God For Aids: Persistent Stereotypes In U.S. Network Television, Micah Moreno Mar 2007

Thank God For Aids: Persistent Stereotypes In U.S. Network Television, Micah Moreno

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This paper explores the use of stereotypes to characterize homosexuals on network television in the United States. With a goal of raising reader awareness of network television’s over-reliance on stereotypes, I also argue that the stereotypical depictions of homosexuals on network television has negative and sometimes even dangerous ramifications in contemporary U.S. culture.

Many argue that the increasing number of gay and lesbian characters featured on network television is an indication of society’s emerging acceptance of homosexuality. However, this is a false assumption given that many of the shows cited as promoting equality are not meant to do that, but …

Synthesis Of New Ruthenium (Ii) Complex With A Long Excited State Lifetime For Its Use As A Dna Probing Biosensor, Terry-Ann Dawes Mar 2007

Synthesis Of New Ruthenium (Ii) Complex With A Long Excited State Lifetime For Its Use As A Dna Probing Biosensor, Terry-Ann Dawes

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Due to the degree of instrumentation needed for DNA diagnostic and colorimetric procedures, it has become considerably expensive for the public and independent laboratories to conduct research on genetic diseases and to probe DNA. Even though myriad technologies are available for detection and measurement of modified target molecules, cell and DNA probing techniques are involved and complex processes. Current methods of chemiluminescence by metal-ligand complexes (such as those with ruthenium) have proven to be ineffective because luminescent lifetimes are extremely short. Hence, the primary focus of this research is to synthesize novel ruthenium-ligand complexes that will have enhanced emission lifetimes. …

The research covered the history of PET from the 1950’s, discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the radioactivity used in PET, as well as the various medical applications of the technology. PET was compared to other imaging techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Tomography (CT), and was found to more accurate in diagnostic procedures than the two. The economic aspects and practicality of PET were also touched upon. Overall, PET …

Mythmaking, National Identity And Balkan History, Tajhira Omphroy Mar 2007

Mythmaking, National Identity And Balkan History, Tajhira Omphroy

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The Balkans, a region seen as “the powder keg of Europe” since the 17th century, is a complex labyrinth of nationalism, ethnicity and religion. Balkan history is best explained in terms of the myths that are the foundation of both religious and nationalistic fervor for the various Balkan ethnic groups. The protagonists of these myths have become not only national heroes, but also saints of the Orthodox Church. In this way, the mythology of each Balkan nation or ethnic group envelops both nationalistic pride and religious beliefs, the result of which is a powder keg that frequently explodes.

Conceptions Of War In Islamic Legal Theory And Practice, Margaret Pettygrove Mar 2007

Conceptions Of War In Islamic Legal Theory And Practice, Margaret Pettygrove

Macalester Islam Journal

The term Jihad, meaning Muslim ‘holy war,’ is a powerful symbol in contemporary society, signifying not only radical violence but the clash of Islamic and Western societies. The demonization and reduction of Islam in popular American culture, particularly with respect to suicide bombings and Political Islam, suggests that Islam is an inherently violent or extremist religion. A brief reading of current studies of the Qur’anic stance on war and violence, however, suggests that the Qur’an supports pragmatism and conservatism regarding the use of force. The Qur’an legitimates the use of force when it is necessary to defend the Muslim community …

The Constructions Of Fay Weldon, Woman Of Letters, Harriet Blymiller Mar 2007

The Constructions Of Fay Weldon, Woman Of Letters, Harriet Blymiller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary British novelist Fay Weldon negotiates the postmodern "culture industry" as the self-conscious heir to a traditon of women writers dating back to the Middle Ages. Like her predecessors, Weldon defensively and offensively negotiates ideological constructions of womanhood, including injunctions to chastity, modesty, and silence; prohibitions against formal education for women; disdain for the literary production and commercial success of women writers; and the application of double standards in the critical reception of their works. Modernizing the strategies traditionally deployed by women writers, Weldon engages with the advertising industry and the mass-oriented literature of radio and television, using them to …

Queer Identity? Discussing Identity And Appearance In An On-Line “Genderqueer” Community, Sharla N. Alegria Mar 2007

Queer Identity? Discussing Identity And Appearance In An On-Line “Genderqueer” Community, Sharla N. Alegria

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The relatively new field of Queer Theory creates ways of thinking about people living without binary gender, but does not provide for a research model with which to give context to the material struggles of such people. Through the use of Internet discussion groups, the current research project attempts to examine the challenges that people who identify with the concept "genderqueer" describe facing as they fashion selves in social interactions; a process which inevitably requires consumer goods that typically only allow for heteronormative binary gender. Findings suggest that there are similarities in how respondents came to identify with "genderqueer," but …

Prevalence Of Language Disorders Among Children With Severe Behavioral Problems Referred For A Psychiatric Evaluation By A Large Urban School District, Brenda J. Curtwright

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the language skills and behavior characteristic of 63 students with severe behavior disorders who were referred by a large, mostly urban school district for a neuropsychiatric evaluation between 2001 and 2005. Archival data were retrieved by chart review for this study and was used to answer the following questions: 1) What is the prevalence of language disorders in children referred for a psychiatric evaluation? 2) Do behavioral symptoms vary among children with and without a language disorder? and 3) What is the initial area of concern identified by the parents of children with language and behavior disorders? …

Filming Theater: The Audiovisual Documentation As A Substitute Of The Performance, Nestor Fernando Bravo Mar 2007

Filming Theater: The Audiovisual Documentation As A Substitute Of The Performance, Nestor Fernando Bravo

Theses and Dissertations

Theatre is not a thermometer of society; it is the fever. The archive is the aftermath that recalls that fever. In this thesis I theorize about the status of audiovisual documentation, its functionality, and its ontological relation with the performance. I argue that the film of a performance does not constitute evidence per se, but it acquires such status through the concurrence of other documents and archival artifacts existentially related to the theatrical production. I also propose that the audiovisual document becomes a substitute for the performance when it has disappeared from the historical world, becoming the new referent for …

The Role Of Ethnic Compatibility In Attitude Formation: Marketing To America’S Diverse Consumers, Cynthia Rodriguez Cano Mar 2007

The Role Of Ethnic Compatibility In Attitude Formation: Marketing To America’S Diverse Consumers, Cynthia Rodriguez Cano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the meaning of advertising through the eyes of the Hispanic consumer and how that meaning is apparent in attitudes and purchase intention. Specifically, the study investigates how ethnic minorities judge print advertisement that feature ethnically diverse models as communication cues. For the first time, data of how minorities evaluate the compatibility of models from different ethnic groups featured together in an advertisement was collected. Qualitative data was collected from Hispanics and typologies of cultural pointers for Hispanics and African-Americans developed. Experimental design, 3x2 within-group analysis, was conducted to test the 14 hypothesized relationships. Finding clearly support the …
