Computer Geolocation Using Extracted Features, Chad M.S. Steel Apr 2007

Computer Geolocation Using Extracted Features, Chad M.S. Steel

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This paper compares the extracted feature data from a sample set of hard drive images in an effort to relate the features to the physical location of the drive. A list of probable zip codes, phone numbers, place names, and IP addresses are extracted from raw drive images and compared to manually identified geolocation data. The results of the individual extractions are then analyzed to determine the feasibility in using automated extraction and analysis techniques for geolocating hard drives.

Keywords: hard disk forensics, geocoding, geolocation

Language Shift: Spanish In The United States, Alison Philbrick Apr 2007

Language Shift: Spanish In The United States, Alison Philbrick

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

This thesis deals with the concept of language shift, paying particular attention to Spanish in the United States. Initially, the factors that influence a language’s shift in dominance such as population dislocation, conquest etc. are examined. The origins of English are also explored as an example of how a language evolves over time. Spanish influence, including the language, was gradually introduced to North America in the 15th and 16th centuries during the age of exploration. Columbus, Ponce de Leon, Hernando De Soto and Francisco Vazquez de Coronado contributed greatly to this surge of Spanish culture. Immigration also played and continues …

Deg Xinag Oral Traditions: Reconnecting Indigenous Language And Education Through Traditional Narratives, Beth R. Leonard Apr 2007

Deg Xinag Oral Traditions: Reconnecting Indigenous Language And Education Through Traditional Narratives, Beth R. Leonard

Indigenous Studies

"Deg Xinag," literally 'local language' is the westernmost of the Athabascan 1 languages. The language area is also referred to as "Deg Hit'an," literally, 'local people'. The Deg Hit'an are often referred to inappropriately in anthropological and linguistic literature as "Ingalik," a Yup'ik word meaning 'lice-infested'. There are currently three villages in western, interior Alaska where this language is spoken and about 20 fluent speakers of this language remaining. As I proceeded through my graduate research I came to understand the significance of indigenous language revitalization in relation to its potential contributions to indigenous and cross-cultural education. These contributions include …

Language Switching On English Compositions Of Latino Students In Alaska And Puerto Rico, Edna Jimenez-Lugo Apr 2007

Language Switching On English Compositions Of Latino Students In Alaska And Puerto Rico, Edna Jimenez-Lugo

English

The main objective of the research described in this dissertation was to explore how English second language (ESL) writers used their first language (L1) when composing in their second language (L2). This task was undertaken by identifying participants according to their L2 (English) proficiency level, Latino ethnic subgroup, and generational status. Another objective of this study was to better understand the writer's perspective regarding first language use in L2 writing, referred to as language-switching (L-S) in this study. Eight high school Latinos were recruited in Fairbanks, Alaska, and a group of twenty-three college-level participants in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Participants were …

Multiple Intelligence Theory In The Classroom, Carolann Ellingson Apr 2007

Multiple Intelligence Theory In The Classroom, Carolann Ellingson

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Howard Gardner first proposed his theory of Multiple Intelligence theory in 1983. Over the past two decades this theory has made its way into classrooms and has gained positive attention. However, with the restrictions of set curriculums and standardized testing, Multiple Intelligence theory has faced obstacles implementing fully into the classroom. To effectively apply this theory into the classroom there needs to be openness to differences within the classroom and how students learn. The goal of this project was to present a project that will be a useful tool for beginning and experienced teachers. The strategies presented in this project …

French Framing Of Anna Karenina: Confused Identities In Russian Aristocratic Culture, Devin Conley '07 Apr 2007

French Framing Of Anna Karenina: Confused Identities In Russian Aristocratic Culture, Devin Conley '07

Honors Projects

Anna Karenina uses Russian identities and Russian language in opposition to European culture and French language to highlight the superficiality ofthe Russian aristocracy in the nineteenth century. In the context of the novel, honesty to oneself worth is the highest expression of being; unless one lives in truth, one cannot lay claim to a genuine existence. Culture and, more importantly, cultural identity provide this appraisal and affirmation of our own self-worth, as well as a framework in which to approach life.

A Fuzzy Madm Method For Solving A/R Collection Instruments Selection Problem, Chien-Chang Chou Apr 2007

A Fuzzy Madm Method For Solving A/R Collection Instruments Selection Problem, Chien-Chang Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The aim of this paper is to propose a ranking method for solving the account receivable (A/R) collection instrument selection problem in the international trade under the fuzzy multiple attribute decisionmaking (MADM) environment. The representation of multiplication operation on fuzzy numbers is useful for decision makers who are in the fuzzy multiple attribute decision-making environment to rank all candidate A/R collection instruments and choose the best one. Based on the graded mean integration representation method, this paper proposes the representation of multiplication operation on fuzzy numbers. Finally this representation of multiplication operation on fuzzy numbers is applied to solving an …

A Fuzzy Multicriterion Q-Analysis Model For International Logistic-Park Location Selection, Junn-Yuan Teng, Kuo-Liang Lee, Wen-Chih Huang Apr 2007

A Fuzzy Multicriterion Q-Analysis Model For International Logistic-Park Location Selection, Junn-Yuan Teng, Kuo-Liang Lee, Wen-Chih Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This research empirically evaluates locations for development of international logistics parks from the perspective of Taiwanese firms. A new fuzzy multiple criteria Q-analysis (MCQA) method is proposed to improve the performance judgment of decision-makers. An empirical evaluation of 11 potential locations in northern Taiwan was performed, using local logistics professionals as participants. The fuzzy MCQA method that integrates MCQA, fuzzy measurement and fuzzy grade classification gives an explicit result value for each criterion to be evaluated. The method greatly decreases the complexity of the evaluation process and preserves the advantages of the traditional MCQA method. Finally, the theoretical and practical …

The Right To Health: Conflicting Paradigms Of Health As Commodity Vs. Health As Human Right, Robert Colin Nelson Apr 2007

The Right To Health: Conflicting Paradigms Of Health As Commodity Vs. Health As Human Right, Robert Colin Nelson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite the fact that the United States spends more per capita than any other nation on healthcare for its citizens, the quality of American health outcomes lags well behind every other developed country in the world. This paper proposes that it is no coincidence that the United States is also the only developed nation that does not guarantee the right comprehensive coverage of medical services for its citizens. Instead, we rely on a fee-for-service system which functionally denies quality health care to those without the means to pay for it. In this paper I document the experiences of various clients …
