Building A Christian Worldview Through Response To Literature, Pam Adams
Building A Christian Worldview Through Response To Literature, Pam Adams
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Research has shown that what one reads can be an important factor in developing one’s worldview. This paper will report my thoughts about experiences I had while reading aloud-challenging texts in two Christian school classrooms. My goal for the read alouds was to have students think about issues related to justice, love, and commitment as they apply to both the family and the larger community. Various types of response methodologies (written, art, drama, discussion) were used to encourage students to build connections between what they learned, to what is the appropriate response and action.
The Cost Of Conformity: Education Reform, Information, And Ethical Leadership, Steve Loomis, Erik Ellefsen
The Cost Of Conformity: Education Reform, Information, And Ethical Leadership, Steve Loomis, Erik Ellefsen
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Like Janus, conformity has two faces. On one face, conformity allows social cohesion to accomplish mission-specific activities. On the other face, conformity in educational leadership can entail a three-part cost against human development. First, education leaders may lose the capacity to ground ethics in objectively valuable sources. This is an effect of formal and informal institutional incentive structures and pressures leaders of virtue to become managers of demand. Second, conformity signals to institutional actors that authentic reform might be too costly to one’s professional career. Third, conformity signals that bureaucracies are not merely locations of special interests, but they are …
Educational Technology: Beyond The Basics, John Shimer
Educational Technology: Beyond The Basics, John Shimer
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This paper addresses classroom technology as a much deeper concept than many would like to believe. It is not something to be taken lightly by only looking at what is currently available, but rather examined through a brief history, in-depth tests, and the consequences as well as the benefits of new developing technology. Furthermore it is not an issue only important for educators and administrators but requires involvement from parents and more importantly Christians to ensure that students are given the greatest opportunity possible for their future. Since technology is the future of children’s education, it is imperative that it …
Assisting Learning And Success In Adhd Children, Katie Burns
Assisting Learning And Success In Adhd Children, Katie Burns
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has become the center of controversy as Americans diagnosis children with ADHD at an ever increasing rate. Yet it seems at times that little is actually known about the disease beyond the accepted truth that a distinct disorder marked by inattention and hyperactivity does, in fact, exist. This disorder causes numerous problems within the classroom including classroom management and jeopardizing the education of all children in the class. One option to overcome these challenges is to place all ADHD children in a separate classroom, however this only serves to isolate the child and entirely exhaust the teacher. …

This paper investigates how deans and directors at the top 50 global MBA programs (as rated by the Financial Times in their 2006 Global MBA rankings) respond to questions about the inclusion and coverage of the topics of ethics, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability at their respective institutions. This work purposely investigates each of the three topics separately. Our findings reveal that: (1) a majority of the schools require that one or more of these topics be covered in their MBA curriculum and one-third of the schools require coverage of all three topics as part of the MBA curriculum, (2) …

Assemblage Dynamics Of Exotic Herpetofauna On Jupiter Campus Of Florida Atlantic University, Kimber Kingsland
Assemblage Dynamics Of Exotic Herpetofauna On Jupiter Campus Of Florida Atlantic University, Kimber Kingsland
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Many species considered exotic, by both biological definition and social construction, have been introduced into South Florida. These species compete for resources with native species and with each other. In this study, I surveyed the John D. MacArthur Campus of Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter Florida during spring and fall of 2005 to determine the assemblage dynamics of several exotic herpetofauna species, primarily the nocturnal Wood Slave gecko (Hemidactylus mabouia), the Indo- Pacific gecko (H. garnotii), and the diurnal Cuban brown anole (Anolis sagrei). I found that the more recently established (H. mabouia) was out-competing (H. garnotii) on most of …
Bioprospecting For Useful Compounds In The Venom Of Crematogaster Ants, Robert E. Mccurdy
Bioprospecting For Useful Compounds In The Venom Of Crematogaster Ants, Robert E. Mccurdy
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Bioprospecting, the search for useful compounds in nature, has led to the discovery of many important pharmaceuticals. Most current bioprospecting efforts work with chemicals derived from marine invertebrates and terrestrial plants. I looked for useful compounds in a relatively unstudied source, the venom of Crematogaster ants, using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). Further studies can more accurately identify these chemicals using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).
Examination Of Alexithymia In A Non-Treatment Seeking Population Of Acute And Chronic Pain Sufferers, Karen L. Ramm
Examination Of Alexithymia In A Non-Treatment Seeking Population Of Acute And Chronic Pain Sufferers, Karen L. Ramm
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Difficulty in communicating internal states may interfere with medical assessment of pain conditions. Individuals who score high on an assessment measure of a construct called alexithymia have difficulty in describing and/or identifying emotions. Both diffuse and low verbal communication styles have been related to alexithymia in chronic pain patients. Alexithymia has also been linked with pain intensity and various chronic pain conditions. As yet, research has not examined whether alexithymia and acute pain are related. The current research examined high-functioning individuals with chronic, acute, or no pain. No difference in alexithymia levels was found between the groups. However, pain intensity …

"Is The World, Then, So Narrow?", Derek. Mcgrath
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and its preface, "The Custom- House," the author himself and Pearl Prynne are characters who engage in travel, escaping the restrictiveness imposed onto them by their hometowns and finding greater creative freedom elsewhere. Their journey, however, is not necessarily physical but rather creative. Hawthorne and Pearl employ writing and imaginative thinking, respectively, in order to characterize Salem and Boston as foreign locations through which they may tour. The two are what Hawthorne calls "citizen[s] of somewhere else," although they have not departed from their homes yet. By considering how "The Custom-House" relates to The …
Breeding Season And Fecundity Of Gopherus Polyphemus In South Florida, Melody. Strattan
Breeding Season And Fecundity Of Gopherus Polyphemus In South Florida, Melody. Strattan
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
The gopher tortoise, Gopherus polyphemus, is a threatened species native to the southeastern United States. The breeding season of G. polyphemus is reportedly from April to June. However, out of season hatchlings in Jupiter, Florida, suggest that in South Florida, the very southernmost part of the gopher tortoise's range, the warmer climate allows a longer period of reproduction or a year-round breeding season. My research sought to find evidence for an extended breeding season and to collect fecundity data on the South Florida tortoises by capturing female tortoises and X-raying them at different times of the year to check for …
From Mortality To Connectedness, Garreth. Rosenzweig
From Mortality To Connectedness, Garreth. Rosenzweig
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Terror Management Theory posits that induced death-related cognitions lead to anxiety. To relieve anxiety, individuals may bolster their self-esteem or current cultural worldviews. The current study hypothesizes that induced thoughts of social connectedness will be an anxiety-buffering mechanism that will reduce the need to defend one's worldview. Participants watched one of two films which were intended to either induce social connectedness or have no effect on the individual. Each participant watched a short film clip then completed measures pertaining to moral transgressions, affiliative and agentic extraversion, self-esteem, and positive and negative affect. Females who were high on affiliation were found …
Territory Size Of The Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) At Savannas Preserve State Park, Theresa E. Smith
Territory Size Of The Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) At Savannas Preserve State Park, Theresa E. Smith
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
The Florida Scrub-jay is the only bird endemic to the state of Florida, and is entirely restricted to pyrogenic xeric oak scrublands. The species is listed as Threatened, and all populations throughout the state are in decline. The major causes of decline are habitat modification due to development and fire suppression. Preservation and proper fire management is crucial for the continued survival of the species. The territories of three families of Florida Scrub-jays at Savannas Preserve State Park were delineated, and the area calculated using 100% MVCP analysis and compared to work previously published by Cowan (2005). The results of …
Diet-Based Defensive Secretions In Harvestmen, Graham. Whitaker
Diet-Based Defensive Secretions In Harvestmen, Graham. Whitaker
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Harvestmen are known to secrete a wide range of defensive chemicals in order to protect themselves from predators. An earlier study examined the phylogenetic pattern of defensive secretions produced by 22 species of harvestmen. This research, however, assumed that there is a genetic link between the defensive secretions. I wished to determine whether harvestmen defensive secretions may be diet-based by introducing several irritants into their food and then testing their secretions in the same manner. I performed a GC-MS analysis on 13 samples from the Vonones sp. But I found no initial GC-MS readings that showed this species of harvestmen …
Fluctuating Craniodental Asymmetry In The Southern African Cheetah Acinonyx Jubatus Jubatus, Stephanie Julia. Sabshin
Fluctuating Craniodental Asymmetry In The Southern African Cheetah Acinonyx Jubatus Jubatus, Stephanie Julia. Sabshin
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) continues to be an object of intensive study with respect to its genetic heterozygosity and its drastic decline in the wild. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) has been used to evaluate the levels of inbreeding and monomorphism in the cheetah. A measurement of craniodental FA was undertaken to compare the southern African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) with previously collected craniodental FA measurements from the East African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus raineyi). Unlike their counterparts, the southern African cheetah did not show significant asymmetry. These findings suggest that fluctuating asymmetry cannot be used as a determination of genetic depletion in …

Effects Of The Cyanobacterium Lyngbya Majuscula And Artificial Shading On The Seagrass Halodule Wrightii, Kathryn A. Tiling
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009
Extensive blooms of the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula occurred during 2006 in Halodule wrightii seagrass beds. We examined the effects of L. majuscula blooms on seagrass by removal treatments and assessed if this was primarily an effect of shading by conducting artificial shade treatments. We tested the effects of L. majuscula removal and artificial shading on fifty individual 0.25 m2 experimental seagrass plots infested with L. majuscula in a fully crossed, two-way experiment. Measurements included blade elongation, biomass, and stem density. Blade lengths of H. wrightii were significantly increased by the presence of artificial shading and L. majuscula. L. majuscula …

National Culture And Its Effects On Knowledge Communication In Online Virtual Communities, Keng Siau, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Min Ling
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online virtual communities provide a powerful means of knowledge sharing. Despite the prevalence of online virtual communities, there is a paucity of research to investigate the effect of national culture differences on knowledge sharing in online virtual communities. Are there differences between online virtual communities from different national cultures? This research studies the differences in knowledge-sharing activities between US-based and China-based online virtual communities. Hofstede's dimensions of national culture serve as the theoretical foundation for this research.

Image Segmentation Using Multi-Coloured Active Illumination, Tze Ki (Xu Shuqi) Koh, Nicholas Miles, Barrie Hayes-Gill
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, the use of active illumination is extended to image segmentation, specifically in the case of overlapping particles. This work is based on Multi-Flash Imaging (MFI), originally developed by Mitsubishi Electric Labs, to detect depth discontinuities. Illuminations of different wavelengths are projected from multiple positions, providing additional information about a scene compared to conventional segmentation techniques. Shadows are used to identify true object edges. The identification of non- occluded particles is made possible by exploiting the fact that shadows are cast on underlying particles. Implementation issues such as selecting the appropriate colour model and number of illuminations are …

Real-Time Supply Chain Control Via Multi-Agent Adjustable Autonomy, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lucas Agussurja, Ramesh Thangarajoo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Real-time supply chain management in a rapidly changing environment requires reactive and dynamic collaboration among participating entities. In this work, we model supply chain as a multi-agent system where agents are subject to an adjustable autonomy. The autonomy of an agent refers to its capability to make and influence decisions within a multi-agent system. Adjustable autonomy means changing the autonomy of the agents during runtime as a response to changes in the environment. In the context of a supply chain, different entities will have different autonomy levels and objective functions as the environment changes, and the goal is to design …
An Improvement Heuristic For The Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kien Ming Ng, Kim Leng Poh
An Improvement Heuristic For The Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kien Ming Ng, Kim Leng Poh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper formulates a timetabling problem, which is often encountered in a university, as a mathematical programming model. The proposed model combines both teacher assignment and course scheduling problems simultaneously, which causes the entire model to become more complex. We propose an improvement heuristic algorithm to solve such a model. The proposed algorithm has been tested with several randomly generated datasets of sizes that are comparable to those occurring in a university in Indonesia. The computational results show that the improvement heuristic is not only able to obtain good solutions, but is also able to do so within reasonable computational …

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) continue to have a profound effect on the economies and societies where they are used. In this article, we propose three related theories to describe the underlying mechanism for growth in e-commerce revenues at the national level. Endogenous growth theory posits that the primary drivers of e-commerce growth are internal to a country. Exogenous growth theory suggests that the primary drivers of e-commerce growth are external to an economic system, and reflect the forces of the regional economy. A blend of these, a mixed endogenous–exogenous growth theory, incorporates drivers from both the economy and …
