Transmission Scheduling In Sensor Networks Via Directed Edge Coloring, Maggie Xiaioyan Cheng, Li Yin
Transmission Scheduling In Sensor Networks Via Directed Edge Coloring, Maggie Xiaioyan Cheng, Li Yin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a transmission scheduling scheme in sensor networks. Each node is assigned a list of time slots to use for unicasting and broadcast communication. the algorithm employs edge coloring on a directed graph for transmission scheduling. It is different from previous works that use vertex coloring of a graph for node scheduling, or those that use edge coloring of undirected graphs for link scheduling. the proposed algorithm uses the least number of time slots compared to its counterparts and it avoids both the hidden terminal problem and the exposed terminal problem in both unicast and broadcast communication. ©2007 …

Emergency Federalism: Calling On The States In Perilous Times, Adam M. Giuliano
Emergency Federalism: Calling On The States In Perilous Times, Adam M. Giuliano
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The attacks of September 11 prompted a historic debate concerning terrorism and domestic emergency response. This ongoing dialogue has driven policy decisions touching upon both liberty and security concerns. Yet despite the enormous effort that has gone into the national response, the role of the sovereign states, and with it federalism, has received comparatively little attention. This Article explores the relevance of federalism within the context of the "War on Terror" and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Acknowledging that theories of federalism developed elsewhere are insufficient, he outlines a doctrine of 'emergency federalism.' The author argues that the Framers …

Environmental Effects Of Conversion Of Petroleum Fuel-Based Motor Cars To Natural Gas Vehicles (Ngvs), M.I. Jahirul, Rahman Saidur, Haji Hassan Masjuki, S. Ahmed, M.A. Kalam
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In order for saving constrained resources and preservation of environment, natural gas has been found as a proven low cost and low emission alternative fuel to petroleum fuels for all types of motor vehicles. It is being widely used throughout the globe. In Malaysia, still millions of vehicles are plying on use of petroleum fuels. These fuels release huge anti-body and anti-environment gases to the environment. Definitely, this adversely affects the natural ecosystem. In this backdrop, a study is felt important to predict the trend of emissions of these gases released by cars in Malaysia for use of liquid fuels …

Reproductive Success Of Southeastern American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius Paulus) Nesting In 230kv Transmission Towers And Alternative Nest Structures In South-Central Georgia, Hope Alyce Beasley
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This research involved a survey of the distribution and reproductive biology of the threatened southeastern subspecies of the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius paulus). Numbers of Southeastern American Kestrels are estimated to have declined by more than 80% over the last fifty years in the southeastern United States. In Georgia, populations have nearly disappeared below the Fall Line. The paucity of adequate nest sites is the major factor contributing to the decline of this obligate secondary cavity nester. The largest breeding population of this subspecies in Georgia is located in the south-central part of the state in the hollow cross-arms of …

Fiscal Year 2007 Fhwa-536 Report For The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Steven Douglas Kreis
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires state transportation agencies to submit a biennial report on local highway finances. The purpose of these reports is to provide FHWA with the data it needs to capture the financing of highway activities at the local level. Based on this information, it can identify trends in revenue, expenditures, investments, and program development, and in turn make decisions about future investments. The report, FHWA-536, asks agencies to report on four areas of local highway finance: 1) disposition of highway-user revenues; 2) revenues used for roads and streets identified by source and funding type; 3) road …

The Georgia Teacher Alternative Placement Program (GTAPP) began placing teachers in the classroom in 2000. The participants of this study were nine first year teachers in an urban county in Middle Georgia currently enrolled in the Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program (GTAPP). The researcher conducted a qualitative study that began with identification of first year GTAPP teachers in the county. An invitation for participation was sent to all identified teachers through the county email system. Once a pool of volunteers was identified, a random sample of nine subjects was drawn. Upon selection of the nine first-year GTAPP teachers, one-hour semi-structured …
Collaborative Routing Algorithm For Wireless Sensor Network Longevity, Shishir Bashyal, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Collaborative Routing Algorithm For Wireless Sensor Network Longevity, Shishir Bashyal, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study proposes a new parameter for evaluating longevity of wireless sensor networks after showing that the existing parameters do not properly evaluate the performance of algorithms in increasing longevity. This study also proposes an ant inspired Collaborative Routing Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Network Longevity (CRAWL) that has scalability and adaptability features required in most wireless sensor networks. Using the proposed longevity metrics and implementing the algorithm in simulations, it is shown that CRAWL is much more adaptive to non-uniform distribution of available energy in sensor networks. The performance of CRAWL is compared to that of a non-collaborative algorithm. Both …

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
When members of deliberating groups speak with one another, their predeliberation tendencies often become exacerbated as their views become more extreme. The resulting phenomenon—group polarization—has been observed in many settings, and it bears on the actions of juries, administrative tribunals, corporate boards, and other institutions. Polarization can result from rational Bayesian updating by group members, but in many contexts, this rational interpretation of polarization seems implausible. We argue that people are better seen as Credulous Bayesians, who insufficiently adjust for idiosyncratic features of particular environments and put excessive weight on the statements of others where there are 1) common sources …

The Rise Of Agricultural Animal Welfare Standards As Understood Through A Neo-Institutional Lens, Elizabeth Ransom
The Rise Of Agricultural Animal Welfare Standards As Understood Through A Neo-Institutional Lens, Elizabeth Ransom
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
In recent years agricultural animal welfare standards have increasingly been placed on the agenda of international, regional, and national governance bodies, as well as private agrifood organizations. Standards, long the domain of economists, are now recognized as one of the most significant emerging practices for governing food, and as such, a growing number of scholars have focused on the role that powerful actors have in setting standards and the distributional benefits of standards implementation. However, much of the existing literature relies on consumer-demand arguments for explaining the rise of animal welfare standards. This article uses sociological neo-institutionalism, specifically institutional isomorphism, …
