Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Viscosupplementation by intraarticular administration of exogenous hyaluronic acid has been a favorable treatment option to alleviate the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. The potential but uncommon adverse reactions associated with intraarticular hyaluronic acid injection are local pain, swelling, and allergic response. These reactions are typically mild, transient, and self-limiting. The focus of this report is an 80-year-old man who presented with acute painful swelling of his knee joint after an injection of naturally derived hyaluronic acid. Aspiration of knee joint effusion yielded 40 mL of turbid straw-colored fluid. Synovial fluid cell counts revealed numerous leukocytes with a marked predominance of neutrophils. …

Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome With Chronic Subdural Hemorrhage: A Casereport, Yun-Fu Chou, Wei-Jang Yen, Chia-Hui Dai, Ta-Shen Kuan, Chang-Zern Hong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Patients who suffer antiphosphlipid antibody syndrome may have two kinds of antibodies, Anticardiolipin and Lupus anticoagulant. These antibodies may increase the risk of ischemic stroke and cerebral ischemia. However, the incidence of cerebral bleeding is relative rare. As a result, patients with antiphosphlipid syndrome often take oral anticoagulants for a long-term period to prevent ischemic stroke attack. We report a female patient who was diagnosed antiphosphlipid antibody syndrome in 1998, and took oral anticoagulants for a long period to restrain the symptom of thrombosis. The INR(International Normalized Ratio)value has been kept between 1.5 to 2.0 by controlling the dosage of oral …

Cerebellar Mutism Syndrome Following Arteriovenous Malformation Rupture Of The Cerebellum: A Report Of Two Cases, Shih-Chung Chang, Su-Ju Tsai, Wei-Liang Nieh
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Cerebellar mutism syndrome is a rare but devastating consequence following posterior fossa surgery or lesion. It tends to occure predominantly in children, and is characterized by transient mutism, oromotor apraxia, apathy, hypokinesis, irritability and mood lability. The vermis, paravermian region and deep cerebellar nuclei are important structures which are highly correlated with the occurrence of cerebellar mutism syndrome. We report two cases, aged 11 and 15 years, who developed cerebellar mutism after rupture of posterior fossa arteriovenous malformation. Swallowing difficulty, irritability and aggressive behavior occurred concomitant with mutism. For the two cases, their symptoms of mutism lasted for 6 months …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
High resolution musculoskeletal ultrasonography has been a comprehensive tool for differentiation of soft tissue mass. However, it is not commonly used as a standard examination in the diagnosis of an aneurysm. We present a case of a growing mass in the medial aspect of the left thigh status post internal fixation of periprosthetic fracture. Initial examination with a 10 MHz linear array probe revealed a blurred hypoechoic lesion at a depth of 5 cm. After switching to a 7.5 MHz curve-linear array probe, we found a well-defined, ovoid, hypoechoic cystic lesion with posterior enhancement. In color Doppler mode, a half-blue/half-red …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is attributed to a spinal epidural hematoma which is not caused by incidental, traumatic, or iatrogenic (for example, lumbar puncture) procedures. SSEH is an uncommon condition causing spinal cord lesion and subsequent neurologic deficits. Spinal cord pathology is often followed by neuropathic pain which may be treated with a combination of drug regimens, such as gabapentin, tricyclic antidepressants, topic lidocaine, opioids and serotoninnorepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. We present a case of SSEH with neuropathic pain that was treated with gabapentin, morphine and imipramine. The patient developed choreoathetosis temporally related to adjunctive therapy with gabapentin at dosages …

Periodontal Disease And Diabetes: Knowledge And Attitudes Assessment Project
Periodontal Disease And Diabetes: Knowledge And Attitudes Assessment Project
Florida Public Health Review
There is a growing body of evidence showing that periodontal disease is more prevalent among diabetic patients than among non-diabetic patients. This same evidence also shows that the more poorly controlled the diabetes, the more severe the periodontal disease. However, it is unclear if the increased risk of periodontal disease is known by the diabetes community. Two hundred diabetic patients voluntarily participated in an intervention to increase the diabetic patient’s knowledge of and attitudes toward periodontal disease. The study was conducted at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) during the month of May 2005. The purpose …

Quantitating fat and lean tissue in isolated body regions may be helpful or required in obesity and health-outcomes research. However, current methods of regional body composition measurement require specialized, expensive equipment such as that used in computed tomography or dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Simple body size or circumference measurement relationships to body composition have been developed but are limited to whole-body applications. We investigated relationships between body size measurements and regional body composition. Methods Using DEXA technology we determined the fat and lean tissue composition for six regions of the body in predominantly Caucasian, college-aged men (n = 32) …
