"Migration and trade are more prevalent today than ever before in the history of the world. The United States is the recipient of about one-third of the world’s migrants and accounted for a quarter of the world’s output and 13 percent of the world’s trade in 2005. But the global significance of the U.S. economy is slowly declining, and while the effects of migration and trade on the U.S. economy have been examined time and again, questions concerning the impact of migration and trade on development in low-income countries are of growing importance.

Simple, neoclassical economic models predict that prices …

Southwest Missouri Water Quality Improvement Project (Wqip) Sac River Basin Water Quality Gap Analysis, Mec Water Resources, Inc., Ozarks Envrionmental Water Resources Institute

OEWRI Technical Reports

Rapid growth and expansion in southwest Missouri are threatening the water resources this region’s population, agriculture, and tourism industry so heavily depend upon. In response to this threat, several watershed groups in southwest Missouri collaborated to secure federal funding for water protection efforts in this region. As a result of this effort, the Environmental Resources Coalition (ERC) received a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant to develop and manage the Southwest Missouri Water Quality Improvement Project (WQIP), a mult-year, multi-stakeholder effort to address water quality issues in this region. WQIP has initially been tasked with assembling, evaluating, and interpreting existing …

East Side Story - The East Baltimore Development Initiative, Phillip A. Hummel Dec 2007

East Side Story - The East Baltimore Development Initiative, Phillip A. Hummel

Legal History Publications

East Baltimore, Maryland is a study of remarkable contrasts. The area is home to the Johns Hopkins University medical campus, which contains some of most distinguished academic and health institutions in the entire world. The centerpiece of the sprawling complex is the striking Johns Hopkins Hospital, consistently rated America’s best hospital every year since 1992 and sustaining an annual operating budget over $4 billion.

Yet right outside its iron wrought gates lies the Middle East neighborhood, one of the most impoverished and crime-ridden communities in the City of Baltimore.

There is a long history of unease and mistrust between the …

Redistribution By Insurance Market Regulation: Analyzing A Ban On Gender-Based Retirement Annuities, Amy Finkelstein, James Poterba, Casey Rothschild Dec 2007

Redistribution By Insurance Market Regulation: Analyzing A Ban On Gender-Based Retirement Annuities, Amy Finkelstein, James Poterba, Casey Rothschild

Economics Faculty Scholarship

This paper illustrates how a model of an insurance market with asymmetric information can be calibrated and solved to evaluate the economic consequences of government regulation. We estimate the impact of restricting gender-based pricing in the United Kingdom retirement annuity market, a market in which individuals are required to annuitize their retirement savings by selecting among a range of different annuity contracts. After calibrating a lifecycle utility model and estimating a model of annuitant mortality that allows for unobserved heterogeneity, we solve for the range of equilibrium contract structures with and without gender-based insurance pricing. Eliminating gender-based annuity pricing is …

The purpose of this study was to measure the influence of quercetin on plasma cytokines, leukocyte cytokine mRNA, and related variables in ultramarathoners competing in the 160-km Western States Endurance Run (WSER). Sixty-three runners were randomized to quercetin and placebo groups and under double-blinded methods ingested 1000 mg/day quercetin for 3 weeks before the WSER. Thirty-nine of the 63 subjects (n = 18 for quercetin, n = 21 for placebo) finished the race and provided blood samples the morning before the race and 15–30 min postrace. Significant prerace to postrace WSER increases were measured for nine proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory …

Building The Case: Health Promotion For Vocational Rehabilitation Consumers, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute Dec 2007

Building The Case: Health Promotion For Vocational Rehabilitation Consumers, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

A new line of research for the Research and Training Center on Disability in Rural Communities (RTC: Rural) focuses on the role of secondary conditions and health promoting lifestyle behaviors in obtaining and maintaining employment for adults with physical disabilities. This line of research started with Ipsen (2006) conducting an analysis of Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data. She found that individuals who reported lower rates of secondary conditions and/or who practiced better lifestyle behaviors had a higher probability of being employed after controlling for demographic characteristics including age, gender, race, education, and disability severity. Past research has shown that …

Uncovering P53 Mutations And Abnormal Gene Expression In Pediatric Adrenocortical Cancer, Alina Nico West Dec 2007

Uncovering P53 Mutations And Abnormal Gene Expression In Pediatric Adrenocortical Cancer, Alina Nico West

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Pediatric adrenocortical cancer is extremely rare and often fatal (approximately 0.3-0.4 cases per million worldwide; 50% 5-year survival). The incidence of pediatric adrenocortical cancer in southern Brazil is 10-15 times higher than the worldwide incidence. Due to the rarity of adrenocortical cancer, especially in children, underlying gene dysregulation and mechanisms of tumorigenesis of the adrenal gland are very poorly described in the literature. However, it is well-known that the tumor suppressor p53, which is mutated in over 50% of all human cancers, is commonly mutated in pediatric adrenocortical cancer. In addition, evidence strongly suggests that if a child has adrenocortical …

Satisfied, Optimistic, Yet Concerned: Parent Voices On The Third Year Of The Dc Opportunity Scholarship Program, Thomas Stewart, Patrick J. Wolf, Stephen Q. Cornman, Kenann Mckenzie-Thompson

School Choice Demonstration Project

On January 23, 2004, President Bush signed the DC School Choice Incentive Act into law. This landmark piece of legislation included $14 million in funding for what would become the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP). The OSP is the first federally-funded K-12 scholarship program in the country and was designed to provide approximately 1,700 children from low income families with tuition scholarships worth up to $7,500. The scholarships cover the costs of attending nonpublic schools within the District of Columbia that agreed to participate in the Program. In December of 2006, Congress amended the DC School Choice Incentive Act to …

Alternatives To The “Race To The Bottom” In Vietnam: Minimum Wage Strikes And Their Aftermath, Angie Tran Dec 2007

Alternatives To The “Race To The Bottom” In Vietnam: Minimum Wage Strikes And Their Aftermath, Angie Tran

SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations

This case study focuses on strategic mediating roles of labor newspapers. Concentrating on minimum wage strikes from 2005 to 2006, it shows the state’s pro-foreign direct investment policy, tensions between state bureaucracies and labor unions, and their debates. It demonstrates alternatives to the “race to the bottom” thesis. The larger implication is that labor organizing and spontaneous collective actions can be successful even within a one-party state. It remains to be seen how the new strike law ratified in 2006 addresses structural weaknesses of the labor unions and the state, and how it affects labor organizing for workers’ rights and …

Perceived Community Environment And Physical Activity Involvement In A Northern-Rural Aboriginal Community, Allison M. Kirby, Lucie Lévesque, Virginia Wabano, Jennifer Robertson-Wilson Dec 2007

Perceived Community Environment And Physical Activity Involvement In A Northern-Rural Aboriginal Community, Allison M. Kirby, Lucie Lévesque, Virginia Wabano, Jennifer Robertson-Wilson

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Background: Type 2 diabetes disproportionately affects Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Ample evidence shows that regular physical activity (PA) plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Evidence is beginning to emerge linking PA to the physical environment but little is known about the relationship between remote rural environments and PA involvement in Aboriginal peoples. This study’s purpose was to investigate the relationship between perceptions of the environment and PA and walking patterns in Aboriginal adults in order to inform the planning and implementation of community-relevant PA interventions.

Methods: Two hundred and sixty three residents (133 …

China's Good Earth: From Urbanization To Rural Development Under Hu Jintao 'S Administration, Jessica Wade Dec 2007

China's Good Earth: From Urbanization To Rural Development Under Hu Jintao 'S Administration, Jessica Wade

Global Asia Journal

This paper analyzes the recent efforts of the Chinese government to facilitate rural development. It reviews the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s previous emphasis on urban-based growth, the history behind the shift towards rural development, and the attempts by President Hu Jintao to move from extensive urban development towards sustainable rural development. It asserts, first, that much of China’s urban-based development was intentionally encouraged by the government, and second, that the CCP is now deliberately moving its investment and focus to rural-based growth. The paper justifies these findings through an exploration of the previous and current economic policies and propaganda of …

The Troublemaker's Friend: Retaliation Against Third Parties And The Right Of Association In The Workplace, Alex B. Long

Scholarly Works

Title VII theoretically provides virtually unlimited protection from retaliation for one kind of workplace troublemaker - the employee who files a formal charge of discrimination. However, the protection from retaliation enjoyed by such individuals is significantly less when the troublemaker resorts to an employer's internal process for resolving discrimination complaints prior to the filing of a formal charge of discrimination. And what of the coworker who assists the troublemaker in pursuing such an internal grievance? Or the coworker who simply has some type of relationship with the troublemaker who files a formal charge of discrimination? What protection from retaliation do …

Economics Faculty Publications

The crisis in the housing and financial sectors has led to a dramatic slowdown in U.S. economic growth. Fourth quarter GDP growth and job growth are expected to be anemic and the economy may fall into recession in 2008. Indeed, several of the dozen members of the Nebraska Business Forecast Council do believe that the U.S. economy will likely slip into recession during 2008. However, the overall consensus of the Council is that the U.S. economy will avoid a recession. Economic growth will be slow in the first three quarters of 2008 before recovering in late 2008 and 2009.
