Sustainable Antenatal Care Services In An Urban Indigenous Community: The Townsville Experience, Kathryn S. Panaretto, Melvina R. Mitchell, Lynette Anderson, Sarah L. Larkins, Vivienne Manessis, Petra G. Buettner, David Watson

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Objective: To evaluate the impact of a sustained, community-based collaborative approach to antenatal care services for Indigenous women.

Design: Prospective quality improvement intervention, the Mums and Babies program, in a cohort of women attending Townsville Aboriginal and Islanders Health Service, 1 January 2000 – 31 December 2005 (MB group), compared with a historical control group (PreMB group), 1 January 1998 – 30 June 1999.

Main outcome measures: Proportion of women having inadequate antenatal care and

screening; perinatal indicators. Results: Thenumberofantenatalvisitsperpregnancyincreasedfromthree

(interquartilerange[IQR],twotosix)inthePreMBgrouptosix(IQR,fourtoten)inthe MB group (P < 0.001). There were significant improvements in care planning, completion of cycle-of-care, and antenatal education activities throughout the study period. About 90% of all women attending for antenatal care were screened for sexually transmitted diseases, 89% had measurement of haemoglobin level, and serological tests for hepatitis B and syphilis (minimum antenatal screening). There was increased attendance for dating and morphology scans. In the MB group compared with the PreMB group, there was a significant reduction in perinatal mortality (14 v 60 per 1000 births; P=0.014). Conclusion: Sustained access to a community-based, integrated, shared antenatal service has improved perinatal outcomes among Indigenous women in Townsville.

Bovine Respiratory Disease In Feedlot Cattle: Phenotypic, Environmental, And Genetic Correlations With Growth, Carcass, And Longissimus Muscle Palatability Traits, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. V. Cundiff, G. L. Bennett, M. Koohmaraie, M. E. Dikeman Jul 2007

Bovine Respiratory Disease In Feedlot Cattle: Phenotypic, Environmental, And Genetic Correlations With Growth, Carcass, And Longissimus Muscle Palatability Traits, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. V. Cundiff, G. L. Bennett, M. Koohmaraie, M. E. Dikeman

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most costly feedlot disease in the United States. Selection for disease resistance is one of several possible interventions to prevent or reduce the economic loss associated with animal disease and to improve animal welfare. Undesirable genetic relationships, however, may exist between production and disease resistance traits. The objectives of this study were to estimate the phenotypic, environmental, and genetic correlations of BRD with growth, carcass, and LM palatability traits. Health records on 18,112 feedlot cattle over a 15-yr period and slaughter data on 1,627 steers over a 4-yr period were analyzed with bivariate animal …

Incorporating Results Of Avian Toxicity Tests Into A Model Of Annual Reproductive Success, Richard S. Bennett*, Matthew A. Etterson Jul 2007

Incorporating Results Of Avian Toxicity Tests Into A Model Of Annual Reproductive Success, Richard S. Bennett*, Matthew A. Etterson

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Modeling the effects of pesticide exposure on avian populations requires knowledge of how the pesticide changes survival and fecundity rates for the population. Although avian reproduction tests are the primary source of information on reproductive effects in the pesticide risk assessment process, current tests cannot provide a direct estimate of the effects of a pesticide on fecundity rates. We present a mathematical model that integrates information on specific types of effects from reproduction tests with information on avian life history parameters, the timing of pesticide applications, and the temporal pattern of pesticide exposure levels to estimate pesticide effects on annual …

A New Species Of Dipetalonema (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) From Ateles Chamek From The Beni Of Bolivia, Juliana Notarnicola, F. Agustin Jimenez-Ruiz, Scott Lyell Gardner Jul 2007

A New Species Of Dipetalonema (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) From Ateles Chamek From The Beni Of Bolivia, Juliana Notarnicola, F. Agustin Jimenez-Ruiz, Scott Lyell Gardner

Publications

We describe a new species of Dipetalonema occurring in the body cavity of Ateles chamek (Humboldt, 1812) from north-central Bolivia. Morphologic characters serving to separate Dipetalonema yatesi n. sp. from known forms include a vagina vera with a simple tube and thin walls and a left spicule, which possesses a handle shorter than the lamina (ratio 2.7); the latter displays an anterior membranous alae similar in length to the terminal flagellum, a distal extremity of the left spicule within a simple hook and a membrane, phasmids at the basis of the lappets, and heterogeneous muscles occupying the whole cavity. Dipetalonema …

The Incentive Effects Of Organizational Forms: Evidence From Florida’S Non-Emergency Medicaid Transportation Programs, Chifeng Dai, David Denslow, James Dewey Jul 2007

The Incentive Effects Of Organizational Forms: Evidence From Florida’S Non-Emergency Medicaid Transportation Programs, Chifeng Dai, David Denslow, James Dewey

Economics Discussion Papers

We analyze the incentive effects of organizational forms using data from Florida’s Non-Emergency Medicaid Transportation (NEMT) programs. These programs differ in the extent to which their brokers are directly involved in providing transit services. Based on a simple model of moral hazard, we predict that the number of users and the number of claims per user of the program increase, but cost per claim of the program decreases, as its broker’s share of transit services increases. The empirical evidence supports our theoretical predictions on the incentive effects of different organizational forms.

What Do Nonprofits Maximize? Hospital Service Provision And Market Ownership Mix, Jill R. Horwitz, Austin Nichols Jul 2007

What Do Nonprofits Maximize? Hospital Service Provision And Market Ownership Mix, Jill R. Horwitz, Austin Nichols

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

Conflicting theories of the nonprofit firm have existed for several decades yet empirical research has not resolved these debates, partly because the theories are not easily testable but also because empirical research generally considers organizations in isolation rather than in markets. Here we examine three types of hospitals – nonprofit, for-profit, and government – and their spillover effects. We look at the effect of for-profit ownership share within markets in two ways, on the provision of medical services and on operating margins at the three types of hospitals. We find that nonprofit hospitals’ medical service provision systematically varies by market …

Overcoming Challenges In Online Counseling Course Practica, L. Zoe Payne, Lucinda C. West, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Anita Castellanos

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Masters and doctoral students enrolled in Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs [CACREP] accredited programs must meet certain standards regardless of the environment in which they learn. In our case, we are doctoral students enrolled in an online counselor education and supervision (CES) program delivered through the Blackboard.comSM e-learning system. Members of our cohort live in various parts of the United States and beyond its borders. The standards by which our program seeks to offer quality education are the standards established by CACREP (2001).

CACREP (2001) standards address group counseling and practicums. Doctoral-level students must engage in …

UCHC Articles - Research

Parental phenotype is known to influence the inheritance of atopic diseases, such as allergic asthma, with a maternal history being a more significant risk factor for progeny than paternal history. We hypothesized that recall Th1- or Th2-type immune responses during pregnancy would result in transfer of maternal factors that would differentially impact development of immune responsiveness in offspring. Following weaning, susceptibility and severity of allergic airway disease (a murine model of human asthma) was evaluated in progeny, disease being elicited by immunization with OVA-Al(OH)3 and challenge with aerosolized OVA. We found that progeny of mothers with Th1-biased immunity to …

Transitions Into And Out Of The Wic Program: A Cause For Concern?, Alison Jacknowitz, Laura Tiehen Jul 2007

Transitions Into And Out Of The Wic Program: A Cause For Concern?, Alison Jacknowitz, Laura Tiehen

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Despite the health benefits of participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), many eligible households do not participate in WIC during pregnancy and others exit WIC after a child turns one year old. This research uses the first two waves of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) to advance our understanding of these transitions into and out of WIC. Findings suggest that those who exhibit better economic health across a variety of dimensions are more likely to delay entry into the program or exit after a child turns one year of age.

Cleaning High-Speed Marine Separators With An Environmentally-Friendly Cip Agent, Ulf Nylén, Roger Andersson, Peter Forsberg

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning VII

The present contribution is devoted to the cleaning of high-speed marine separators employing the environmentally-friendly Cleaning In Place (CIP) agent Alpacon Multi Cip Super. For this particular study an Alfa Laval lube oil separator of type S831 on board the ship MS Isabella was dismantled prior to its first CIP treatment since installation and a few of the sludge-coated insert discs were taken as samples for laboratory experiments. Following assembly, the separator was cleaned according to a standard CIP protocol. Back in the laboratory, experiments mimicking the field CIP conditions verified the excellent cleaning results observed by visual inspection out …
