Sexual Satisfaction In Older Marriages: Effects Of Family-Of-Origin Distress And Marital Distress, Luke Elias Wilson Jul 2007

Sexual Satisfaction In Older Marriages: Effects Of Family-Of-Origin Distress And Marital Distress, Luke Elias Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how sexual satisfaction in older marriages (marriages with at least one spouse between the ages of 55 and 75) was affected by family-of-origin distress (recent measure of recollection of childhood experiences) and marital distress (measure of current marital relationship) for husbands and wives. The hypotheses of this study were that both family-of-origin distress and marital distress would have negative effects on sexual satisfaction for older couples, with marital distress having a direct, negative effect on sexual satisfaction and with family-of-origin distress having an indirect, negative effect on sexual satisfaction through its influence …

Bioassessment And The Partitioning Of Community Composition And Diversity Across Spatial Scales In Wetlands Of The Bonneville Basin, Mary Jane Keleher Jul 2007

Bioassessment And The Partitioning Of Community Composition And Diversity Across Spatial Scales In Wetlands Of The Bonneville Basin, Mary Jane Keleher

Theses and Dissertations

The Bonneville Basin encompasses an area that was covered by ancient Lake Bonneville and which today lies within the Great Basin province. The Bonneville Basin is distinguished geologically by its characteristic parallel north-south mountain ranges that are separated by broad, alluviated desert basins and valleys. Benches and other shoreline features of ancient Lake Bonneville prominently mark the steep, gravelly slopes of these ranges. Numerous artesian desert springs are present at the base of the mountains and in the valley floors that form various sizes of both isolated wetlands and wetland complexes. Many these wetlands are some of the most unique …

Development And Characterization Of Microsatellite Markers For The Grain Amaranths (Amaranthus Spp. L.), Melanie Ann Mallory Jul 2007

Development And Characterization Of Microsatellite Markers For The Grain Amaranths (Amaranthus Spp. L.), Melanie Ann Mallory

Theses and Dissertations

The grain amaranths (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L., A. cruentus L., and A. caudatus L.) are important pseudocereals native to the Americas that have received increased attention for their nutritional content, specifically their balance of amino acids. The objective of this project was to produce and characterize a set of highly informative, reproducible microsatellite markers for the grain amaranths. A total of 1457 clones were sequenced from three genomic libraries enriched for the microsatellite motifs AAC, AAT and AC. Of these, 353 (24%) contained unique microsatellites. An additional 29 microsatellite loci were identified among 728 BAC-end sequences of a newly developed amaranth …

Stereotyped Seniors: The Portrayal Of Older Characters In Teen Movies From 1980-2006, Dawn Leah Magoffin Jul 2007

Stereotyped Seniors: The Portrayal Of Older Characters In Teen Movies From 1980-2006, Dawn Leah Magoffin

Theses and Dissertations

This content analysis examined the 60 most popular teen movies from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s to determine how older people (those over 55) are portrayed. This study found that some portrayals of older people in teen movies were favorable. For example, the most positive finding of the current study was the physical portrayal of older characters. The overwhelming majority of older characters were portrayed as active and healthy and rarely portrayed as sick or ugly. The negative physical stereotypes associated with children's media, such as “toothless/missing teeth" and older characters' reliance on physical aids were mostly absent from teen …

Green Iguanas (Iguana Iguana): The Unintended Consequence Of Sound Wildlife Management Practices In A South Florida Park, Walter E. Meshaka Jr., Henry T. Smith, Elizabeth Golden, Jon A. Moore, Stephanie Fitchett, Ernest M. Cowan, Richard M. Engeman, Stacey R. Sekscienski, Heather L. Cress Jul 2007

Green Iguanas (Iguana Iguana): The Unintended Consequence Of Sound Wildlife Management Practices In A South Florida Park, Walter E. Meshaka Jr., Henry T. Smith, Elizabeth Golden, Jon A. Moore, Stephanie Fitchett, Ernest M. Cowan, Richard M. Engeman, Stacey R. Sekscienski, Heather L. Cress

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We examined the demographic response of the Green Iguana (Iguana iguana) to the removal of Raccoons in an urban maritime state park in southern Florida. The rapid growth of iguanas to sexual maturity in an underexploited, if not vacant, niche contributed to the rapid recruitment of a large and growing population during the four and one half years since removal of its limiting predator. We proffer here that at sites where Green Iguanas and high density Raccoons are syntopic, future Raccoon removal programs should be concurrent with an equally concerted effort to remove resident Green Iguanas. In this …

Wildlife Disease Management: An Insurmountable Challenge?, Scott E. Henke, Alan M. Fedynich, Tyler A. Campbell

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wildlife biologists are increasingly being thrust onto the frontlines of wildlife disease management and surveillance in the United States. For example, biologists now routinely engage in oral vaccination of wildlife [e-g., Oral Rabies Vaccination Programs (QRVPs)] and collect specimens for both diagnostic purposes and disease surveillance or monitoring (e.g., avian influenza in migratory bids). For many, these responsibilities are novel compared to the more traditional roles of population estimation. habitat manipulation, and formulation of harvest recommendations. Wildlife disease investigation and management, in reality, we in their infancy compared with disciplines of human and domestic animal disease management. The recent focus …

Regression Analysis Of A Disease Onset Distribution Using Diagnosis Data, Jessica G. Young, Nicholas P. Jewell, Steven J. Samuels Jul 2007

Regression Analysis Of A Disease Onset Distribution Using Diagnosis Data, Jessica G. Young, Nicholas P. Jewell, Steven J. Samuels

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We consider methods for estimating the effect of a covariate on a disease onset distribution when the observed data structure consists of right-censored data on diagnosis times and current status data on onset times amongst individuals who have not yet been diagnosed. Dunson and Baird (2001) approached this problem using maximum likelihood, under the assumption that the ratio of the diagnosis and onset distributions is monotonic non-decreasing. As an alternative, we propose a two-step estimator, an extension of the approach of van der Laan, Jewell and Petersen (1997) in the single sample setting, that is computationally much simpler and requires …

Graduate Teaching Assistants' Statistical Knowledge For Teaching, Jennifer Ann Noll Jul 2007

Graduate Teaching Assistants' Statistical Knowledge For Teaching, Jennifer Ann Noll

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores graduate teaching assistants’ (TAs’) statistical knowledge for teaching. Data collection methods that enabled the exploration of TA s’ statistical knowledge for teaching include: (a) a task-based web survey administered to 68 TAs from 18 universities across the United States; and, (b) a series of three taskbased interviews with a subset of five TAs from the larger survey population. Through and Strauss, 1967), I investigated the ways in which TAs reason about sampling tasks, and how they think about teaching and student learning in relation to sampling ideas. Building on past research in statistics education on K-12 and …

Vocal Efficiency In Trained Singers Vs. Non-Singers, Kristi Sue Fulton Jul 2007

Vocal Efficiency In Trained Singers Vs. Non-Singers, Kristi Sue Fulton

Theses and Dissertations

Vocal efficiency is a measure of the efficiency of the energy conversion process from aerodynamic power to acoustic power. Few studies have been conducted to measure vocal efficiency in trained singers to determine whether "vocal athletes" are more efficient than non-singers. Data were collected from 20 trained singers (10 male and 10 female) and 20 non-singers (10 male and 10 female) to determine if there were any significant differences between the two groups. During the recording, each participant produced a series of syllables at combinations of three different levels of pitch and loudness. The acoustic and aerodynamic data were analyzed …

The Development Of Ready-A (Ready For Adolescents): An Adolescent Premarital Education Inventory, Lorinda A. Gutierrez Jul 2007

The Development Of Ready-A (Ready For Adolescents): An Adolescent Premarital Education Inventory, Lorinda A. Gutierrez

Theses and Dissertations

Learning about romantic relationships can be one of the central features of adolescence. However, there are not many useful and scholarly tools for adolescents to evaluate themselves and their relationship competence. Such tools can be helpful in the premarital education process. READY is a premarital assessment questionnaire instrument that is used for such purposes but it was designed for use with adults ages 18 and over. In this study READY for Adolescents (READY-A) was developed as a revision and extension of READY with age-appropriate questions to be used with adolescents. A review of literature on adolescent romantic relationships and factors …

Libertas Reborn: A Legend Of Florence And Leigh Hunt's Literary Revival, Adrianne Gardner Malan Jul 2007

Libertas Reborn: A Legend Of Florence And Leigh Hunt's Literary Revival, Adrianne Gardner Malan

Theses and Dissertations

According to traditional accounts, following the premature deaths of Keats, Shelley, and Byron in the 1820s, literature in England fell into a sort of slumber until the late 1830s and early 1840s, when a new generation-a generation we now call the Victorians-came on the scene. Literary scholarship has tended to ignore this period of slumber as an uninteresting gap between the two dynamic movements of Romanticism and Victorianism. It was during this transitional period, however, that Leigh Hunt, one of the most radical of Romantic figures, wrote and staged A Legend of Florence (1840) in an attempt to stimulate a …

Loneliness And Use Of Coping Mechanisms Among U.S. Military Personnel Deployed To The Middle East, David Abraham Shwalb Jul 2007

Loneliness And Use Of Coping Mechanisms Among U.S. Military Personnel Deployed To The Middle East, David Abraham Shwalb

Theses and Dissertations

Considering that the greatest fear of deploying military personnel is separation from family, an obvious and overlooked psychological phenomenon that merits further investigation is loneliness. In this study, 131 US troops completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Anxiety Control Questionnaire, and a leisurely activity participation scale to predict loneliness with participation in non-work activities in the presence of another moderator (locus of control) and various demographic factors. As hypothesized, the results indicated that 1) the best non-work activity predictors of loneliness were emailing friends and listening to music, 2) external locus of control was positively correlated with loneliness and internal locus …
