Predicting Career Success In Classically Trained Musicians, Vanessa R. Rempel

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined several factors (performance anxiety, anxiety sensitivity, vocational decidedness, and amount of time in the profession) that are believed to contribute to success in music performance professions. Existing literature highlights the unique role that some of these variables play in career success, however no research has examined the combined impact of these four factors or has attempted to identify the relative weight each predictor holds.

The present study recruited participants through various professional music organizations that require a minimum and standardized level of music training. Participants were invited to complete an on-line survey that consisted of measures …

Anxiety Disorders In Children With Williams Syndrome, Their Mothers, And Their Siblings : Implications For The Etiology Of Anxiety Disorders., Ovsanna Leyfer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Genetic factors play an important role in the etiology of anxiety disorders. Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic disorder caused by a deletion on chromosome 7q11.23 and associated with increased prevalence of anxiety disorders relative to the general population and other genetic disorders associated with intellectual disability, can be used in the search for susceptibility genes for anxiety disorders. This study examines the prevalence of anxiety disorders in children with WS, their mothers, and their siblings as well as predictors of anxiety in these groups, in order to facilitate the use of WS in studies of genetics of anxiety disorders. Anxiety …

A Systematic Approach To The Development Of Fluorescent Contrast Agents For Optical Imaging Of Mouse Cancer Models, Joy L. Kovar, Melanie A. Simpson, Amy Schutz-Geschwender, D. Michael Olive

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

In the past decade, our increased elucidation of the molecular basis of cancer has led to the development of novel targeted strategies for specific inhibition of cancer signaling pathways that control growth, proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. Several monoclonal-antibody-based therapeutics and small-molecule drugs have received clearance for use as human therapeutics [1]. However, among these successes are many candidate drugs that have failed in clinical trials despite promising preclinical results [2]. The development of targeted therapeutics is expensive and time consuming. In their Critical Path Initiative, the United States Food and Drug Administration emphasized the need for more effective tools to …

Platelet Hyperreactivity: Predictive And Intrinsic Properties., Paul F. Bray Aug 2007

Platelet Hyperreactivity: Predictive And Intrinsic Properties., Paul F. Bray

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Platelet thrombi are central to the development of most vascular ischemic events. There is marked interindividual variation in platelet responsiveness, with some subjects displaying platelet hyperreactivity. An increasing number of reports indicate that there are laboratory measures of platelet function that predict clinical thrombotic events. Some, but not all, measures of platelet function are reproducible. Platelet hyperreactivity can be assessed with multiple stimuli in multiple assays and is more likely to be present in women and in subjects who have elevated fibrinogen levels.

Predictors Of Emotional Reactions In Women Treated For Breast Cancer, Erin E. Ramirez

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Breast cancer can be a devastating disease that impacts a woman in all spheres of her life (Ingram, 1989). Previous studies have examined the impact of breast cancer on body satisfaction, as well as the impact on emotional well-being. Studies have also examined the role of the coping style that a woman engages in response to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in the woman's psychological adjustment to the disease. However, to date, no research has introduced and tested a multifaceted model.

The purpose of this study was to develop a model predicting psychological maladjustment in women treated for …

Children With Autism: Sleep Problems And Predictors Of Maternal Stress, Cindy Y. Nam Aug 2007

Children With Autism: Sleep Problems And Predictors Of Maternal Stress, Cindy Y. Nam

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research examining the impact of children’s autism and the sleep problems frequently associated with the disorder on parents’ stress has been quite limited. Studies have been constrained by methodological problems, including small sample sizes and the examination of children of autism within larger groups of children with a range of developmental disabilities. Typically, diagnostic criteria used to select children for an autism study is not indicated and no measure of the severity of children’s symptomology is included. The present investigation was designed to examine children’s autism symptomology and parents’ reports of their children’s sleep problems as well as the parents …

The Politics Of Wine: Trade Barriers, Interest Groups And The Commerce Clause, Alan E. Wiseman, Jerry Ellig Aug 2007

The Politics Of Wine: Trade Barriers, Interest Groups And The Commerce Clause, Alan E. Wiseman, Jerry Ellig

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

We investigate the contemporary impacts of the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution by focusing on recent changes in state laws governing interstate direct shipment of alcohol. The elimination of interstate trade barriers, consistent with the intent of the commerce clause, clearly facilitates efficient markets. More specifically, in 2003, the state of Virginia legalized direct wine shipping to consumers from out-of-state sellers, and by 2004, the average price differential between online sellers and bricks-and-mortar stores in Northern Virginia was approximately 26–40% lower than in 2002. Virginia bricks-and-mortar retailers also began pricing their products as a function of interstate shipping costs …

Evaluation Of Researchers And Their Research: Toward Making The Implicit Explicit, Chris L. S. Coryn Aug 2007

Evaluation Of Researchers And Their Research: Toward Making The Implicit Explicit, Chris L. S. Coryn

Dissertations

Due to its very nature, the evaluation of research permeates nearly every aspect of the work of researchers. They evaluate the work of others or have their own work evaluated. They evaluate hypotheses that come to mind, the previous literature, the quality of data, the explanatory power of theories, or the design of experiments or instruments. And this is not always casual evaluation. It is highly skilled evaluation, and becoming a first-rate or world-class researcher is a process of improving the quality of these evaluations. However, deciding when someone is or has become a first-rate or world-class researcher is an …
