Imagining Mexico In 1910: Visions Of The Patria In The Centennial Celebration In Mexico City, Michael J. Gonzales Aug 2007

Imagining Mexico In 1910: Visions Of The Patria In The Centennial Celebration In Mexico City, Michael J. Gonzales

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Mexico’s 1910 Centenario reflected a popular trend in Western Europe and its former colonies to use centenaries of important historical events to promote political programmes and philosophies through the construction of historical memory. Centennial organisers in Mexico linked Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and Jose´ Maria Morelos to President Porfirio Dı´az in words and symbols, and associated state formation and civic culture with Liberal leaders and policies, such as public education, material progress and secularism. The planners also promoted Morelos as a mestizo icon and symbol for national identity and integration, while they simultaneously celebrated Mexico’s pre-Columbian cultures and criticised contemporary …

Preps Surveillance: Summary Of Existing Survey Measures And Recommendations For Ongoing Efforts, Lois Biener, Karen Bogen, Catherine A. Garrett Aug 2007

Preps Surveillance: Summary Of Existing Survey Measures And Recommendations For Ongoing Efforts, Lois Biener, Karen Bogen, Catherine A. Garrett

Center for Survey Research Publications

Over the past decade or more, tobacco companies have introduced cigarettes with lower content of some toxins than regular and light cigarettes. These new cigarettes, referred to as a class as Potential Reduced Exposure Products (PREPs), have typically been introduced into test markets, not nationwide, which means they are not yet widely known or recognized by name or description by most consumers. However, the introduction of these products is of great concern to public health advocates, who do not believe that enough research, particularly long term research, has been done to know whether or not the PREPs, even if proven …

Relationships between hypothesized correlates and an objective measure of student's moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in a subset of 177 students were also investigated. Agreement between student and parent ranged from r=.34 to .64 for PA correlates. Spearman correlations between MVPA and PA correlates ranged from -.04 to .21 for student report and -.14 to .32 for parent report, and there were no statistical differences for 8 out of 9 correlations between parent …

A Question Of Culture For Overweight Individuals, Heather A. Macdonald Aug 2007

A Question Of Culture For Overweight Individuals, Heather A. Macdonald

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study was designed using flexible research methods to explore the experiences and beliefs of overweight individuals in a cultural context. Two research questions were undertaken: the first being Do overweight individuals experience a subculture?, and the second exploring How do overweight individuals' experiences of oppression relate to whether they have a subculture or not? As an analysis of the literature revealed, the overweight population's oppression and stigmatization is often unrecognized within our greater society. With millions of Americans being classified as overweight this population is increasing in number, warranting further notice within social research. This exploratory study includes …

Precaution, Science, And Learning While Doing In Natural Resource Management, Holly Doremus Aug 2007

Precaution, Science, And Learning While Doing In Natural Resource Management, Holly Doremus

Washington Law Review

Dealing with uncertainty is widely recognized as the key challenge for environmental and natural resource decisionmaking. Too often, though, that challenge is considered only from an ex ante perspective which treats uncertainty as an invariant feature that must be accounted for but cannot be changed. With respect to many natural resource management decisions, that picture is misleading. Decisions are often iterative or similar, providing significant opportunities for leaming. Where such opportunities are available and inaction is not feasible or desirable, learning while doing can provide the benefits of both the precautionary principle and scientific decisionmaking while minimizing the key weaknesses …

Teaching Environmental Law In The Era Of Climate Change: A Few Whats, Whys, And Hows, Michael Robinson-Dorn Aug 2007

Teaching Environmental Law In The Era Of Climate Change: A Few Whats, Whys, And Hows, Michael Robinson-Dorn

Washington Law Review

One of our key objectives at this celebration has been to explore the future of environmental law. To continue the exploration, I've chosen to address not an area of environmental law or environmental practice, but rather the teaching of environmental law. I hope to provoke the dialogue toward answering fundamental questions about what we should teach, why we should teach it, and how we should go about that task. It is an effort that I hope will engage not only the usual suspects for such pieces, a few fellow teachers and the watchful eye of a student law review editor, …

The Family Experience With Eating Disorders Scale: Psychometric Analysis, Victoria Folse Aug 2007

The Family Experience With Eating Disorders Scale: Psychometric Analysis, Victoria Folse

Scholarship

The role of the family in the development and maintenance of eating disorders is frequently cited in the literature; however, common methodological issues, including the use of diverse family assessment instruments with inadequate psychometric properties, exist. Further, variables specific to families with eating disorder are not being captured in available instruments. The modeling and role-modeling theory (Erickson, H., Kinney, C. (Eds). 1990. Modeling and role-modeling: Theory, practice, and research. Austin, TX: Society for Advancement of Modeling and Role-Modeling; Erickson, H. Tomlin, E., Swain, M. A.1983. William H. Rodgers, Jr., And Environmental Law: Never Give Up, Keep On Going, John E. Bonine

Washington Law Review

Despite his best efforts to give the riches of the symposium to others, Professor Rodgers could not completely deflect the attention and recognition that was being paid to his own work and example. He was required to sit and listen as words of praise fell everywhere around him. While experts were speaking, comments were also coming in by e-mail and on pieces of paper circulated during the lectures. Who was the subject of this talking circle? This essay attempts to paint a picture of Professor Rodgers's contributions to environmental law and the impact he has had on the lives of …

Cognitive Vs. Supportive Therapy For Distressed Collegians, Jean Clore Aug 2007

Cognitive Vs. Supportive Therapy For Distressed Collegians, Jean Clore

Dissertations

Rates of depressive symptoms, psychological distress, and low self-esteem appear to be growing on college campuses. Determining how best to help distressed collegians is an important public health concern, as these individuals appear to be at significant risk for further deterioration, disrupted quality of life, and impaired ability to succeed in college. This study compared the effects of (a) six sessions of cognitive therapy (CT; training in two cognitive modification strategies—building positive self-thoughts and disputing negative self-thoughts) to (b) six sessions of non-directive, supportive therapy (ST). Fifty-three students from a large mid-western university reporting low self-esteem and significant levels of …

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Through the Garrison Diversion Unit Reformulation Act of 1986, the Municipal, Rural and Industrial Water Supply (MR&I) program was authorized by the US Congress on May 12, 1986. This act authorized the appropriation of $200 million of Federal funds for the planning and construction of water supply facilities throughout North Dakota. The Northwest Area Water Supply (NAWS) project was developed as a result of this authorization and was initiated in November 1987. NAWS is a bulk water distribution system that will service local communities and rural water systems in 10 counties in northwestern North Dakota, including the community of Minot …

Tools For Inclusion: Self-Determination: A Fundamental Ingredient Of Employment Support, Lora Brugnaro, Jaimie Ciulla Timmons

Tools for Inclusion Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

Persons with disabilities should direct their own job searches, from determining their interests and goals to researching employment opportunities to starting a new job. Doing so increases their sense of empowerment and can contribute to their employment success. Employment professionals have a facilitating role to play in the process. Job seeker self-determination practices should drive employment services' coordination, funding, and implementation.

Cost-Time Sensitive Decision Tree With Missing Values, Shichao Zhang, Xiaofeng Zhu, Jilian Zhang, Chengqi Zhang Aug 2007

Cost-Time Sensitive Decision Tree With Missing Values, Shichao Zhang, Xiaofeng Zhu, Jilian Zhang, Chengqi Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cost-sensitive decision tree learning is very important and popular in machine learning and data mining community. There are many literatures focusing on misclassification cost and test cost at present. In real world application, however, the issue of time-sensitive should be considered in cost-sensitive learning. In this paper, we regard the cost of time-sensitive in cost-sensitive learning as waiting cost (referred to WC), a novelty splitting criterion is proposed for constructing cost-time sensitive (denoted as CTS) decision tree for maximal decrease the intangible cost. And then, a hybrid test strategy that combines the sequential test with the batch test strategies is …

Do Horizontal Propulsive Forces Influence The Nonlinear Structure Of Locomotion?, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou Aug 2007

Do Horizontal Propulsive Forces Influence The Nonlinear Structure Of Locomotion?, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Background: Several investigations have suggested that changes in the nonlinear gait dynamics are related to the neural control of locomotion. However, no investigations have provided insight on how neural control of the locomotive pattern may be directly reflected in changes in the nonlinear gait dynamics. Our simulations with a passive dynamic walking model predicted that toe-off impulses that assist the forward motion of the center of mass influence the nonlinear gait dynamics. Here we tested this prediction in humans as they walked on the treadmill while the forward progression of the center of mass was assisted by a custom built …

A Second Large Plasmid Encodes Conjugative Transfer And Antimicrobial Resistance In O119:H2 And Some Typical O111 Enteropathogenic Escherichia Coli Strains, Adaobi I. Nwaneshiudu, Tania Mucci, Derek J. Pickard, Iruka N. Okeke Aug 2007

A Second Large Plasmid Encodes Conjugative Transfer And Antimicrobial Resistance In O119:H2 And Some Typical O111 Enteropathogenic Escherichia Coli Strains, Adaobi I. Nwaneshiudu, Tania Mucci, Derek J. Pickard, Iruka N. Okeke

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

A novel and functional conjugative transfer system identified in O119:H2 enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strain MB80 by subtractive hybridization is encoded on a large multidrug resistance plasmid, distinct from the well-described EPEC adherence factor (EAF) plasmid. Variants of the MB80 conjugative resistance plasmid were identified in other EPEC strains, including the prototypical O111:NM strain B171, from which the EAF plasmid has been sequenced. This separate large plasmid and the selective advantage that it confers in the antibiotic era have been overlooked because it comigrates with the virulence plasmid on conventional gels.

Redefining What It Means To Be A Republican: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Same-Sex Marriage, David Alexander Aug 2007

Redefining What It Means To Be A Republican: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Same-Sex Marriage, David Alexander

All Theses

This thesis examines the same-sex marriage debate within the Republican Party and how the Family Research Council and the Log Cabin Republicans construct their rhetorical arguments using Aristotelian appeals. By defining the debate according to Lloyd Bitzer's rhetorical situation, this thesis considers the rhetorical sustainability of these organizations' claims about same-sex marriage and the implications for the future of the Republican Party.
The United States is witnessing the increasing presence of gays and lesbians in the media and everyday life. The history of homosexuals living their lives behind closed doors is becoming a thing of the past. As a result …

Diffusion In Education: An Examination Of Enrollment Diversity In Postsecondary Institutions, Lisa Christine Widener Aug 2007

Diffusion In Education: An Examination Of Enrollment Diversity In Postsecondary Institutions, Lisa Christine Widener

All Theses

The thesis examines the diffusion of diversity through proportional increases in diverse enrollment among postsecondary institutions. Specifically, it tests whether the diffusion pattern of diversity will follow the model predicted by classic neoinstitutionalists, diffusing from high to low status actors, or in the case of controversial innovations follow the path predicted by Gerbasi’s (2002) Status Contingent Diffusion Theory, diffusing from low to high status actors. This study argues that diversity is a controversial innovation and will thus follow the diffusion path posited by Gerbasi (2002). This research predicts that lower status postsecondary institutions will “adopt,” or proportionally increase, diversity before …

Incorporating Neighborhood Social Patterns Into Neighborhood Planning Models, Paul Duggan Aug 2007

Incorporating Neighborhood Social Patterns Into Neighborhood Planning Models, Paul Duggan

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Neighborhood models and patterns are used by developers, planners, and urban designers to plan new neighborhoods and guide the revitalization of older ones. Models are typically based on theories about ideal communities and frequently include significant social objectives.
Comparing neighborhood models with studies of neighborhood life, reveals that neighborhood social and behavioral patterns do not always fit the plan or social objectives of the proposed neighborhood models. There is a gap between the objectives and vision of the models and the patterns of life in the neighborhood. Social patterns such as neighboring, urban cognition, travel preferences and personal meaning …

Reflections Of A Community Lawyer, Luz E. Herrera Aug 2007

Reflections Of A Community Lawyer, Luz E. Herrera

Faculty Scholarship

In May 2002, I opened a law office in one of the most underserved communities in Los Angeles County. Many questioned the sanity of such a career path when evaluating my financial stability and the personal toll that such a career path can exact. Given that I graduated from some of the best universities in the country, my friends, family, and strangers were even more perplexed at my choice. I cannot say that my decision to build a law practice in Compton, California, has been easy. However, time and time again, I found myself rejecting more secure and prestigious job …

Soleus H-Reflex Excitability Changes In Response To Sinusoidal Hip Stretches In The Injured Human Spinal Cord, Maria Knikou, Brian D. Schmit, Debjani Chaudhuri, Elizabeth Kay, William Zev Rymer

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Imposed static hip stretches substantially modulate the soleus H-reflex in people with an intact or injured spinal cord while stretch of the hip flexors affect the walking pattern in lower vertebrates and humans. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of dynamic hip stretches on the soleus H-reflex in supine spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects. Sinusoidal movements were imposed on the right hip joint at 0.2 Hz by a Biodex system. H-reflexes from the soleus muscle were recorded as the leg moved in flexion or extension. Stimuli were sent only once in every hip movement cycle that …
