Application Of The Themis Bus To New Missions, Michael Cully, Warren Chen, Kevin Brenneman, Gregory Delory Aug 2007

Application Of The Themis Bus To New Missions, Michael Cully, Warren Chen, Kevin Brenneman, Gregory Delory

Small Satellite Conference

It is recognized that small satellites can complement the services provided by existing larger satellites, providing cost effective solutions to military missions, communications systems, remote sensing applications, satellite rapidresponse, science and technology demonstrator missions. However, today’s small satellites are largely confined to low Earth orbit where they perform remote sensing missions, conduct science operations, and serve as technology test beds. Future small satellite missions will include interplanetary missions, space-weather mapping as well as space exploration and robotic probes.

Afrl's Demonstration And Science Experiments (Dsx) Program – Quest For The Common Micro Satellite Bus, Greg Heinsohn, Tim Girard, Durand Smith, Janet Stuart, Aaron Adler, Jon Schoenberg, Mark Scherbarth, Eric Klaiber

Small Satellite Conference

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate has developed the Demonstration and Science Experiments (DSX) mission to research technologies needed to significantly advance Department of Defense (DoD) capability to operate spacecraft in the harsh radiation environment of medium-Earth orbits (MEO). The ability to operate effectively in the MEO environment significantly increases the DoD’s capability to field space systems that provide persistent global targeting-grade space surveillance, high-speed satellite-based communication, lower-cost GPS navigation, and protection from space weather on a responsive satellite platform. DSX uses a modular design that allows for launch either as a primary satellite on a conventional …

Smallsats To The Moon: Providing The ‘Picks And Shovels For The 21st Century’S Greatest Exploration Endeavour’ , Adam Baker, Andy Phipps, Philip Davies, Xavier Alabart, Martin Sweeting

Small Satellite Conference

Small spacecraft have an enviable history of changing the economics of space. Space development and exploration has historically been costly, and going beyond Earth orbit even more so. However the cost-performance balance of small spacecraft has increased to the point where new commercial business cases using space infrastructure can be enabled. This paper outlines SSTL’s approach to low cost missions, and its validity to exploration, in particular the Moon. The political environment for supporting space missions, particularly exploration in the United Kingdom is covered, including study activities building the case for a national exploration programme and their fit to strategic …

Faster, Smaller, Cheaper: Exploiting The Imminent Low-Cost Launch Era , G.A. Finney, Kevin Spradley, Mark Fowler, Michael Gulley

Small Satellite Conference

The 1990s initiated the era of “Faster, Better, Cheaper” for small spacecraft, and met with mixed success. However, even under the best of circumstances, “Faster, Better, Cheaper” faces the hurdle of high launch costs. In programs with typical launch costs of $20 - 50M or more, spacecraft capabilities are pushed to the limit in order to extract maximum value from the overall system. This drive for high performance results in complex systems, which require significant engineering to address relatively minor changes. However, new launch vehicles offer the potential to reduce launch costs to under $10M and will change the economics …

Fast-Food Government And Physician-Assisted Death: The Role Of Direct Democracy In Federalism, K.K. Duvivier Aug 2007

Fast-Food Government And Physician-Assisted Death: The Role Of Direct Democracy In Federalism, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Modern patients often enter a twilight zone of suspended animation between living and dying that did not exist a generation ago. The majority of Americans believe these terminal patients should have the right to refuse life support and to receive pain relief, even to the point of hastening death. Yet laws addressing the situation are unclear, and physician advocates, like Dr. Kevorkian of Michigan, have faced sanctions and jail time when they responded to patient requests for help to die peacefully. In its 2006 Gonzales v. Oregon decision, the U.S. Supreme Court shifted the physician-assisted death dilemma to the state-side …

Authentic Out-Of-Class Communication In Study Abroad Programs: Success Defined By Continued Motivation And Cultural Appreciation, Erin Fairlight Olsen Aug 2007

Authentic Out-Of-Class Communication In Study Abroad Programs: Success Defined By Continued Motivation And Cultural Appreciation, Erin Fairlight Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

The benefits of study abroad experience in second language acquisition have evolved from unchallenged assumption to the focus of rigorous study in the past several decades. The benefits of out-of-class contact with natives have likewise been questioned. Despite conflicting evidence of its benefit, students frequently cite out-of-class conversations with natives as among the most beneficial aspects of their language acquisition experience. Reviewing the extant literature, this study narrows in on authentic communication-that is, meaningful out-of-class contact with natives, in which students are able to genuinely express themselves and their personality-as a previously unanalyzed element of study abroad research. It is …

The Use Of Non-Natural Nucleotides To Probe Template-Independent Dna Synthesis, Anthony J. Berdis, David Mccutcheon Aug 2007

The Use Of Non-Natural Nucleotides To Probe Template-Independent Dna Synthesis, Anthony J. Berdis, David Mccutcheon

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The vast majority of DNA polymerases use the complementary templating strand of DNA to guide each nucleotide incorporation. There are instances, however, in which polymerases can efficiently incorporate nucleotides in the absence of templating information. This process, known as translesion DNA synthesis, can alter the proper genetic code of an organism. To further elucidate the mechanism of template-independent DNA synthesis, we monitored the incorporation of various nucleotides at the “blunt-end” of duplex DNA by the high-fidelity bacteriophage T4 DNA polymerase. Although natural nucleotides are not incorporated at the blunt-end, a limited subset of non-natural indolyl analogues containing extensive π-electron surface …

Differential Response Of Various Spore Species To Sporicidal Disinfectants, Michael David Pratt Aug 2007

Differential Response Of Various Spore Species To Sporicidal Disinfectants, Michael David Pratt

Theses and Dissertations

In the fall of 2001, letters laced with anthrax spores were delivered to various news organizations in New York and Florida, as well as to two Senators in Washington, D.C. Over 22 anthrax infections and five deaths resulted from exposure to these spores, and decontamination of the affected buildings was both time consuming and costly. Since these attacks, interest in sporicidal disinfectants has increased greatly. Many chemical sporicidal disinfectants are available commercially, but the exposure time required to sterilize can be relatively long. In addition, some spores are simply injured or inhibited by chemical disinfectants, but not necessarily killed. Studies …

Jimenez, Joseph Korn, François-Xavier Maquart, Thierry Oddos, Otto Von Stetten, Jean-Pierre Pujol, Philippe Galéra

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Despite several investigations, the transcriptional mechanisms that regulate the expression of both type I collagen genes (COL1A1 and COL1A2) in either physiological or pathological situations, such as scleroderma, are not completely known. We have investigated the role of hc-Krox transcription factor on type I collagen expression by human dermal fibroblasts. hc-Krox exerted a stimulating effect on type I collagen protein synthesis and enhanced the corresponding mRNA steady-state levels of COL1A1 and COL1A2 in foreskin fibroblasts (FF), adult normal fibroblasts (ANF), and scleroderma fibroblasts (SF). Forced hc-Krox expression was found to up-regulate COL1A1 transcription through a -112/-61-bp sequence in FF, ANF, …

The Effect Of Flame Structure On Soot Formation And Transport In Turbulent Nonpremixed Flames Using Direct Numerical Simulation, David O. Lignell, Jacqueline H. Chen, Philip J. Smith, Tianfeng Lu, Chung K. Law Aug 2007

The Effect Of Flame Structure On Soot Formation And Transport In Turbulent Nonpremixed Flames Using Direct Numerical Simulation, David O. Lignell, Jacqueline H. Chen, Philip J. Smith, Tianfeng Lu, Chung K. Law

Faculty Publications

Direct numerical simulations of a two-dimensional, nonpremixed, sooting ethylene flame are performed to examine the effects of soot–flame interactions and transport in an unsteady configuration. A 15-step, 19-species (with 10 quasi-steady species) chemical mechanism was used for gas chemistry, with a two-moment, four-step, semiempirical soot model. Flame curvature is shown to result in flames that move, relative to the fluid, either toward or away from rich soot formation regions, resulting in soot being essentially convected into or away from the flame. This relative motion of flame and soot results in a wide spread of soot in the mixture fraction coordinate. …
