Mechanisms Of Host Resistance Against Hiv Infection And Progression To Aids, Ali A. Al-Jabri Aug 2007

Mechanisms Of Host Resistance Against Hiv Infection And Progression To Aids, Ali A. Al-Jabri

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Since the discovery in the early eighties of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), there have been reports of people who were completely resistant to infection with HIV and others who progressed at slower rates to AIDS. The present article summarises the mechanisms involved in resistance against HIV infection and progression to AIDS. The paper will specifically focus on the role of immunological mechanisms, genetics, ethnicity and cultural practices such as male circumcision in mitigating infection. The current understanding on host natural resistance against HIV infection and progression to AIDS would potentially contribute to better …

14-3-3 Proteins Interact With The Beta-Thymosin Repeat Protein Csp24, Terry Crow, Juan-Juan Xue-Bian, Joseph T Neary Aug 2007

14-3-3 Proteins Interact With The Beta-Thymosin Repeat Protein Csp24, Terry Crow, Juan-Juan Xue-Bian, Joseph T Neary

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Conditioned stimulus pathway protein 24 (Csp24) is a beta-thymosin-like protein that is homologous to other members of the family of beta-thymosin repeat proteins that contain multiple actin binding domains. Actin co-precipitates with Csp24 and co-localizes with it in the cytosol of type-B photoreceptor cell bodies. Several signal transduction pathways have been shown to regulate the phosphorylation of Csp24 and contribute to cellular plasticity. Here, we report the identification of the adapter protein 14-3-3 in lysates of the Hermissenda circumesophageal nervous system and its interaction with Csp24. Immunoprecipitation experiments using an antibody that is broadly reactive with several isoforms of the …

Value And Types Of Medicines Returned By Patients To Sultan Qaboos University Hospital Pharmacy, Oman, Khalid Al-Siyabi, Kassim Al-Riyami

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objective: Frequent physician visits, improper therapeutic adherence and treatment modification after hospitalisation could result in unused medicine accumulating at home. This study aims to examine the value and types of medicines returned by patients at a tertiary care unit in Oman. Method: All medicines voluntarily returned to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital main pharmacy between February and June 2003 were reviewed. The cost of these medicines and potential cost saving, if some were returned to the hospital distribution cycle, were computed. A method of determining by physical observation whether they can be recycled was developed based on institutional-based guidelines and criteria. …

Frequency Of Uterine Malformation Among Women In A Restricted Gene Pool Community : A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study In La Crete, Canada, Saad R. Ismail

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objective: This random retrospective cross-sectional study was done to determine the incidence of uterine malformation in 4 groups of women desiring to conceive during their reproductive years, all of them living in La Crete, a community in Northern Alberta, Canada, with endogamous marriage practices in a 500 year old restricted gene pool. Methods: During 2003-2006, eight hundred women, suspected of having uterine malformation, were scanned using 2-D abdominal and transvaginal sonography (TVS). A sub-group of 156 patients was identified with suspected uterine malformations and referred for further diagnostic investigation, including MRI, 3-D sonography, hysterosalpingography, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. This group included …

Laparoscopic Deroofing Of Large Renal Simple Cysts Causing Gastric Symptoms, Josephkunju Mathew, Mohammed Al-Marhoon, Norman Rahman, Khalid, Ranjan William Aug 2007

Laparoscopic Deroofing Of Large Renal Simple Cysts Causing Gastric Symptoms, Josephkunju Mathew, Mohammed Al-Marhoon, Norman Rahman, Khalid, Ranjan William

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Widespread use of ultrasonography and computerized tomography of the abdomen result in the detection of a large number of renal mass lesions. Most of these are simple renal cysts, which do not need any further evaluation or follow up unless symptomatic. Simple renal cysts can be diagnosed with certainty if the treating physician or surgeon is aware of these features and can avoid unnecessary urology referral, patient anxiety, inconvenience and expense. Symptomatic cysts and complex renal cysts need further evaluation and intervention. We present the case of large symptomatic renal cysts persisting after aspiration sclerotherapy, which were managed by deroofing …

Autogenous Dermis-Fat Orbital Impant For Anophthalmic Socket, Abdullah Al-Mujaini, Anuradha Ganesh, Sana Aug 2007

Autogenous Dermis-Fat Orbital Impant For Anophthalmic Socket, Abdullah Al-Mujaini, Anuradha Ganesh, Sana

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

To our knowledge, there is no report of dermis-fat graft (DFG) implant for orbital reconstruction from Oman. We hereby presented a case report of a 10-year-old boy with a blind and painful left eye secondary to penetrating eye injury presented with implant extrusion following evisceration with a polymethyl methacrylate implant. The evisceration procedure was converted to enucleation and a DFG orbital implant was then performed. Postoperatively, the graft was observed to be well integrated with the host orbital tissues and had good cosmetic and functional outcomes.

Subclinical Sickle Cell Crisis During Cardiopulmonary Bypass : Timely Detection And Early Management, Raj G. Menon, Madan M. Maddali, Adil Al-Sabti, Hilal

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

A sickle cell crisis can occur during cardiopulmonary bypass for cardiac surgical procedures in patients with sickle cell hemoglobin, which could lead to hemolysis. There is a dearth of such reports from the Arab world. We hereby present two cases from Oman with subclinical sickle cell crisis during cardiopulmonary bypass. The timely detection and early management resulted in good outcome. The good clinical practice for management of such patients is also discussed.

Bilateral Absence Of The Arcuate Artery On The Dorsum Of The Foot : With Anomalous Origin Of Dorsal Metatarsal Arteries, Nilesh K. Mitra, Omar A. Habbal, Abdulghaffar H. Al-Hashmi, Nasser A. Aug 2007

Bilateral Absence Of The Arcuate Artery On The Dorsum Of The Foot : With Anomalous Origin Of Dorsal Metatarsal Arteries, Nilesh K. Mitra, Omar A. Habbal, Abdulghaffar H. Al-Hashmi, Nasser A.

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Bilateral absence of the arcuate artery was observed during routine dissection of the lower limbs of a 60-year-old male cadaver. Running distally on the dorsal aspect of both feet and opposite the tarso-metatarsal joint, the dorsalis pedis artery diverged 2cm lateral to the tendon of the extensor hallucis longus. The 2nd dorsal metatarsal artery was found originating from the dorsalis pedis artery opposite the intermediate cuneiform bone. The 3rd and 4th dorsal metatarsal arteries originated from the lateral tarsal artery. Although absence of the arcuate artery has been previously described, the arterial variant described here is thought to be distinct …

Pengaruh Milling Terhadap Laju Disolusi Campuran Metampiron-Fenilbutason (7:3), Sundani Nurono Soewandhi, Aris Haryana

Majalah Ilmu Kefarmasian

In pharmaceutical process, milling is a common process to produce particle in certain expectation size. Impact of milling process could lead to physical interaction. Dissolution rate will change as an impact of physical interaction. To observe physical interaction between methampyrone and phenylbutazone during milling process, is needed to analyze its X-ray diffractogram, DSC thermogram and dissolution rate. Data of X-ray diffractogram, differential scanning calorimetry and dissolution test, showed that physical interaction occurred after 5,5 hours and 18 hours of milling and cause enhancement of dissolution rate of phenylbutazone. Dissolution rate of methampyrone was constant after 5,5 hours of milling. Decreasing …

Effects Of A Series Of Triorganotins On Atp Levels In Human Natural Killer Cells, Laurin N. Holloway, Keith H. Pannell, Margaret M. Whalen Aug 2007

Effects Of A Series Of Triorganotins On Atp Levels In Human Natural Killer Cells, Laurin N. Holloway, Keith H. Pannell, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Natural killer (NK) cells are our initial immune defense against viral infections and cancer development. Thus, agents that are able to interfere with their function increase the risk of cancer and/or infection. A series of triorganotins (trimethyltin (TMT), dimethylphenyltin (DMPT), methyldiphenyltin (MDPT), and triphenyltin (TPT)) have been shown to decrease the lytic function of human NK cells. TPT and MDPT were much more effective than DMPT or TMT at reducing lytic function. This study investigates the role that decreased ATP levels may play in decreases in the lytic function of NK cells induced by these organotins (OTs). A 24h exposure …
