IPED Technical Reports

The Institute for Policy and Economic Development (IPED) at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) was contracted by the UTEP School of Nursing to conduct an interest survey for a possible Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Respondents were asked directly if they were interested in participating in such a program. The goal of this research is to assess the interest of LVNs in participating in a program that would provide them with the opportunity to earn their BSN.

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Psychosocial Interventions For Individuals With Visible Differences: A Systematic Review Of The Empirical Literature., Alyson Bessell, Timothy P. Moss Sep 2007

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Psychosocial Interventions For Individuals With Visible Differences: A Systematic Review Of The Empirical Literature., Alyson Bessell, Timothy P. Moss

More Faculty of Health Research

The objective of this review was to systematically identify and evaluate all known studies testing empirically the efficacy of psychosocial intervention programmes for adults with visible differences. Twelve papers met the inclusion criteria. None of the papers demonstrated adequately the clinical effectiveness of the interventions. The review concluded that further research was needed to demonstrate adequately the effectiveness of existing interventions, and a greater number of Randomised Controlled Trials and experimental studies were required to increase the methodological validity of intervention studies.

The Impact Of Conflict Between Management And Doctors On Hospital Decisions (An Applied Study), Saad Ali Al-Anzi, Iman Al-Absi

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Since the emergence of hospitals as healthcare-oriented organizations, a persistent conflict has been observed between administrative bodies and medical staff, primarily revolving around the locus of decision-making authority—as both parties derive their professional standing and power from their influence over hospital policies. Despite this inherent tension, the efforts of both groups are fundamentally aligned toward a singular objective: enhancing patient care and elevating public health standards. Consequently, it has become imperative for healthcare administrators to bridge this gap by fostering mutual trust, thereby ensuring that collaborative dynamics yield positive outcomes for the decision-making process. Given that hospital decisions are intrinsically …

Provincial Development In China: Lessons From Eu Regional Policy Experience, Phillip J. Bryson, Keren Sun Sep 2007

Provincial Development In China: Lessons From Eu Regional Policy Experience, Phillip J. Bryson, Keren Sun

Faculty Publications

Regional development in the Chinese provinces and in the regions of the EU countries are evaluated and compared. Development efforts in southern Italy, northeast England and eastern Germany are reviewed along with EU, Community-wide regional development programs. Equity concerns suggest promotion of regional policy, but the pursuit of maximum national economic growth would avoid it, since it sacrifices some economic growth. The impact of FDI and domestic investments on individual Chinese provinces is compared with their impact in Europe. There is an implicit contrast between public sector regional development programs and more effective private foreign direct investments.

Estate Planning For Persons With Less Than $5 Million, Bridget J. Crawford Sep 2007

Estate Planning For Persons With Less Than $5 Million, Bridget J. Crawford

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Individuals of modest wealth may face significant estate taxes but do not have such a large base of wealth that they can 'afford' to make major lifetime gifts or other transfers to reduce estate taxes. But there are planning techniques that can help. Individuals in the ‘modest‘ wealth category face special hurdles in estate planning. This article will assume that the ‘modest‘ wealth category includes individuals whose net worth exceeds the amount of taxable gifts that may be protected by the unified credit (the equivalent of $1 million and herein referred to as the ‘gift tax exemption‘), but does not …
