Evaluation Of Human Prolactin, Its Antagonist, And Antagonist-Based Fusion Proteins As Chemopreventative And Therapeutic Agents, Seth Tomblyn Dec 2007

Evaluation Of Human Prolactin, Its Antagonist, And Antagonist-Based Fusion Proteins As Chemopreventative And Therapeutic Agents, Seth Tomblyn

All Dissertations

Cancer is a collection of diseases with many different manifestations and is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Breast cancer accounts for nearly one third of cancer diagnosis in women. Prolactin (PRL) functions as a lactogen and as a mammary gland differentiation factor. PRL acts in an autocrine/paracrine manner within the mammary gland and in breast tumors which implies PRL may be involved in breast cancer progression. This is corroborated by the PRLR over-expression in breast cancer cells lines and the majority of patient biopsies. These reasons make PRL and PRLR attractive targets for breast cancer …

Influence Of Mercury-Dissolved Organic Matter (Dom) Complexation On Toxicity In Natural Waters, Christina Mcnaughton Dec 2007

Influence Of Mercury-Dissolved Organic Matter (Dom) Complexation On Toxicity In Natural Waters, Christina Mcnaughton

All Dissertations

Global industrialization, coupled with a large biogeochemical cycle that moves mercury through the environment, has resulted in higher mercury concentrations being detected in many environmental compartments. Although the presence of mercury in each compartment has the potential to elicit toxicity, mercury found in natural waters provides the greatest risk, due to the various reactions it can undergo, resulting in a plethora of different species.
Due to the fact that mercury contamination in aquatic systems has the potential to bioaccumulate and biomagnify up the food chain and cause toxicity, understanding the behavior of mercury in these systems is imperative in the …

Iowa Physicians: Legitimacy, Institutions, And The Practice Of Medicine, Part Three: Dealing With Poverty And Defending Autonomy, 1929-1950, Susan C. Lawrence Dec 2007

Iowa Physicians: Legitimacy, Institutions, And The Practice Of Medicine, Part Three: Dealing With Poverty And Defending Autonomy, 1929-1950, Susan C. Lawrence

Department of History: Faculty Publications

This article, the last of this three-part series, briefly lays out some of the major changes in medical organization and institutions in Iowa between 1929 and 1950. The bulk of the essay then focuses on the effects that the rising costs of medical care had on ordinary Iowa physicians. Anxiety about the expense of medical services for the respectable working and middle classes joined worries about paying for the basic health needs of the indigent and marginally poor. In the 1910s and 1920s, more physicians and more patients expected hospital stays for surgery and childbirth, looked to laboratory-based tests for …

In-Vitro Investigations On Ultrasonic Control Of Water Chestnut, Meiyin S Wu, J. Wu Dec 2007

In-Vitro Investigations On Ultrasonic Control Of Water Chestnut, Meiyin S Wu, J. Wu

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Water chestnut (Trapa natans L.) is native to southern Europe and tropical Africa and Asia and was first introduced into North America in 1874. Since then, wild populations have quickly become established in many locations in the northeastern United States. T. natans is referred to as a noxious aquatic weed since its aggressive growth usually results in complete coverage of the water surface with floating rosettes of leaves. This study investigated the potential of the ultrasonic control of water chestnut since ultrasound has been documented to effectively damage plant cells and tissues. Various frequencies and amplitudes of ultrasound waves generated …

Constructive Enabling: Applying A Wilderness Skills Intervention To Support The Therapeutic Change Process Of Adolescent Females In Residential Treatment, Brian K. Malcarne

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the potential benefits of a primitive wilderness skills intervention (POST) on the therapeutic change process of adolescent females enrolled in a residential treatment center. A qualitative data analysis approach was used. A convenience sample of eight female adolescents was selected by therapist referral. The data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Data analysis was used to assess participants' progress in the therapeutic change. Further analysis revealed a core theme connecting participants' POST experience with feelings of self-empowerment and reflective connections to their individual therapeutic change process. Constructive enabling was the …

Effects Of Endurance Training On The Ampk Response To Exercise., David Gerald Chesser Dec 2007

Effects Of Endurance Training On The Ampk Response To Exercise., David Gerald Chesser

Theses and Dissertations

Activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) results in the upregulation of several intracellular systems which help to prepare a cell for a high energy challenge. The magnitude of the AMPK response to a 10 min bout of exercise has been found to decrease in red quadriceps (RQ) following training, while putative AMPK roles seem to be maintained; specifically, the biogenesis of mitochondria and higher levels of hexokinase II and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4). If the AMPK response to exercise is responsible in part for these adaptations, how can they be maintained if the AMPK response is attenuated? The purpose of …
