Development of transcriptional pulsing approaches using the c-fos and Tet-off promoter systems greatly facilitated studies of mRNA turnover in mammalian cells. However, optimal protocols for these approaches vary for different cell types and/or physiological conditions, limiting their widespread application. In this study, we have further optimized transcriptional pulsing systems for different cell lines and developed new protocols to facilitate investigation of various aspects of mRNA turnover. We apply the Tet-off transcriptional pulsing strategy to investigate ARE-mediated mRNA decay in human erythroleukemic K562 cells arrested at various phases of the cell cycle by pharmacological inhibitors. This application facilitates studies of the …

Chondrocyte gene regulation is important for the generation and maintenance of cartilage tissues. Several regulatory factors have been identified that play a role in chondrogenesis, including the positive transacting factors of the SOX family such as SOX9, SOX5, and SOX6, as well as negative transacting factors such as C/EBP and delta EF1. However, a complete understanding of the intricate regulatory network that governs the tissue-specific expression of cartilage genes is not yet available. We have taken a computational approach to identify cis-regulatory, transcription factor (TF) binding motifs in a set of cartilage characteristic genes to better define the transcriptional regulatory …
Sending States’ Transnational Interventions In Politics, Culture, And Economics: The Historical Example Of Italy, Mark I. Choate
Sending States’ Transnational Interventions In Politics, Culture, And Economics: The Historical Example Of Italy, Mark I. Choate
Faculty Publications
This article uses archival evidence to study in depth the historical policies of Italy, as a classic sending state. Most of the mass migrations of a century ago came from multinational empires, but Italy was a recently formed independent state. Ambitious to benefit from emigration while assisting and protecting emigrants, Italy reached out to “Italians abroad” in several ways. For example, the state opened a low‐cost channel for remittances through a non‐profit bank; promoted Italian language education among Italian families abroad; supported Italian Chambers of Commerce Abroad; and subsidized religious missionary work among emigrants. Italy’s historical example of political innovation …

Counting Outsiders: A Critical Exploration Of Outsider Course Enrollment In Canadian Legal Education, Natasha Bakht, Kim Brooks, Gillian Calder, Jennifer Koshan, Sonia Lawrence, Carissima Mathen, Debra Parkes
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
In response to anecdotal concerns that student enrollment in "outsider" courses, and in particular feminist courses, is on the decline in Canadian law schools, the authors explore patterns of course enrollment at seven Canadian law schools. Articulating a definition of "outsider" that describes those who are members of groups historically lacking power in society, or traditionally outside the realms of fashioning, teaching, and adjudicating the law, the authors document the results of quantitative and qualitative surveys conducted at their respective schools to argue that outsider pedagogy remains a critical component of legal education. The article situates the numerical survey results …

Genetic Disorders: Implications For Allied Health Professionals: Two Case Studies, Michaele Smith, Jerome V. Danoff, Mina Jain, Toby M. Long
Genetic Disorders: Implications For Allied Health Professionals: Two Case Studies, Michaele Smith, Jerome V. Danoff, Mina Jain, Toby M. Long
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
With advances in study of the human genome, increasingly accurate genetic testing has become available. Genetic-based birth defects may result in progressive dysfunction. Consequently, because of the negative associations, many people do not want to consider prognostication testing or accept the most appropriate treatments. The allied health practitioner may see this as counter to the goal of optimal health care. However, consideration must be given to the patient’s comfort with advanced knowledge. In this paper we discuss ethical, legal, and social implications of genetic testing and how these relate to patients seen in an allied health environment. First, background on …
Challenges Facing Physiotherapy Education In Africa, Jose Frantz
Challenges Facing Physiotherapy Education In Africa, Jose Frantz
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Health care is changing and the demands put on health professionals are increasing. Physiotherapy education should reflect the health and social priorities of the nation. The World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT) is committed to assisting physiotherapy associations in developing educational standards. Physiotherapy education in Africa however, seems to have a real need for assistance from the WCPT. The aim of this paper is to highlight the challenges facing physiotherapy education in Africa. The Delphi methodology was used to obtain information from key informants involved in the area of physiotherapy education from a variety of African countries. The majority of …
The Prevalence Of Incontinence Pre And Post-Lung Transplantation, Dianne White, Kathy Stiller
The Prevalence Of Incontinence Pre And Post-Lung Transplantation, Dianne White, Kathy Stiller
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
An increased prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) is reported in patients with chronic lung disease because of the stress that repeated coughing places on the pelvic floor. To date, it is not known if lung transplantation (LTx) affects the prevalence of UI. Purpose: to compare the prevalence, severity and impact of urinary / faecal incontinence in adult patients pre- and post-LTx. Method: patients registered with the Royal Adelaide Hospital Lung Transplant Unit were eligible for participation. The prevalence, severity, and impact of incontinence was measured using a questionnaire administered in a private interview. Results: Ninety-four patients (44 males, 50 females; …

Functional Balance Assessment Of Older Community Dwelling Adults: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Felicity Anne Langley, Shylie F. H. Mackintosh
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background: For allied health professionals wishing to assess the functional balance of older adults living in the community, the vast number of functional balance tests available makes it difficult to decide which assessment is most appropriate. Objective: To identify the reliability, concurrent validity and clinical practicality of functional balance tests with community dwelling older adults. Methods: A systematic review of published literature relevant to 17 functional balance tests was undertaken. The 17 functional balance tests were identified by a preliminary literature search and through consultation with an expert in the field of functional balance assessment. Studies published in English before …

T Cells Expressing Allograft Inflammatory Factor 1 Display Increased Chemotaxis And Induce A Profibrotic Phenotype In Normal Fibroblasts In Vitro, Francesco Del Galdo M.D., Ph.D., Sergio A. Jimenez M.D.
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Objective. Allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF-1) was first identified in rat cardiac allografts undergoing chronic rejection. The vasculopathy of chronic allograft rejection is strikingly similar to that seen in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). We previously demonstrated AIF-1 expression in inflammatory cells infiltrating skin and lungs from SSc patients, but its role in SSc pathogenesis is unknown. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of AIF-1 on T cell migration and production of cytokines capable of modulating normal dermal fibroblast functions.
Methods. Stably transfected Jurkat T cells expressing 2 AIF-1 splicing variants were prepared, and their migration toward …
From Mothers' Allowance To Mothers Need Not Apply: Canadian Welfare Law As Liberal And Neo-Liberal Reforms, Shelley A. M. Gavigan, Dorothy E. Chunn
From Mothers' Allowance To Mothers Need Not Apply: Canadian Welfare Law As Liberal And Neo-Liberal Reforms, Shelley A. M. Gavigan, Dorothy E. Chunn
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
In this paper we examine changes in the form and content of Canadian welfare law through a historical, feminist lens using the exemplar of mother-headed families. Our analysis of how the state dealt with sole support mothers in several provinces throughout the twentieth century reveals important continuities, as well as discontinuities, between the past and the present that have shaped and reshaped the lives and experiences of poor women and their children. In doing so, it helps to illuminate how they have been rendered "undeserving" or "never deserving" with the neo-liberal (re)formation of the Keynesian state in Canada.

Risks And Benefits Of Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography: A Review, Patrick Wi Pau
Risks And Benefits Of Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography: A Review, Patrick Wi Pau
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Multislice computed tomography coronary angiography (CTA) is a noninvasive radiology technique that provides high-resolution images of the coronary artery. It has high sensitivity and specificity for coronary stenosis and can be used to rule out significant coronary artery disease (CAD), thereby avoiding the risk of invasive coronary angiography. There is a danger that CTA may be overused as a screening test for CAD in healthy subjects, thereby exposing the patients to the dangers of adverse reactions to iodinated contrast agents and cancer induction from radiation exposure. Consensus document has been published for clinical guidance on when it is appropriate to …
The Ties That Bind? Regionalism, Commercial Treaties, And The Future Of Global Economic Integration, Chris Brummer
The Ties That Bind? Regionalism, Commercial Treaties, And The Future Of Global Economic Integration, Chris Brummer
Vanderbilt Law Review
A revolutionary shift in international cooperation is underway. Many governments, frustrated with dissension hampering multilateral trade reform at the World Trade Organization ("WTO"), are now turning to bilateral and regional treaties to forward their commercial interests.1 Under these agreements, which rocketed from fewer than 390 in 1989 to more than 2,400 today,2 states have relinquished key aspects of their economic sovereignty to participate in two-party pacts and regional trade clubs like the North American Free Trade Agreement ("NAFTA") and the European Union ("EU"). As a result of such cooperation, most countries no longer may levy tariffs easily, subsidize their domestic …

Infant Mortality Trends Among Georgia Residents, 1995-2003: Targeting Healthy People’S 2010 Goals, Diana Sturges, Laura Gunn, Padmini Shankar, Shrikrishna Shroff
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Population-based trends in infant mortality among Georgia Residents between 1995 and 2003 were assessed on characteristics such as race, birth weight, neonatal and post-neonatal periods, and cause of death. A statistical analysis was conducted to show that the Georgia infant mortality rate (IMR) remained constant throughout the study period and averaged 8.67 per 1,000 live births. The analysis revealed racial disparities, with an IMR ranging from 6.03 in white infants to 13.76 in black infants, with less than one percent (0.86%) change, on average, among the differences between black and white mortality rates across the nine-year period. The disparities were …
