Chronic Granulomatous Disease With Recurrent Hepatic Abscesses In An Adult., Tarig S. Al-Khuwaitir, Tariq A. Madani, Tariq Al-Qahtani, Ali S. Al-Tuwaijri

Saudi Medical Journal

Chronic granulomatous disease CGD is a condition of inability to deal with bacterial and fungal infections, due to defective respiratory burst in neutrophils leading to recurrent cutaneous and visceral infections. Usually a disease of childhood, but patients nowadays survive to adulthood, and diagnosis might be difficult if not considered. We describe a 20-year-old female with previously undiagnosed CGD, presenting with recurrent cutaneous and hepatic abscesses.

Congenitally Corrected Transposition Of Great Arteries With Ischemic Symptoms In Middle Age., Syed M. Zaidi, Mabrooke M. Al-Sharary, Tarig S. Al-Khuwaitir, Najeeb U. Sajid

Saudi Medical Journal

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries CCTGA is a rare congenital disease first described by Von Rokitansky in 1875. Transposition of the great arteries comprises 2.6 - 7.8% of all cases of congenital heart disease, and if uncorrected, is commonly fatal in the first year of life. Patients with corrected transposition of the great arteries without associated defects may remain undiagnosed until adult life. Symptoms occur rarely before the fourth and fifth decades, when rhythm disturbance, left atrioventricular valve regurgitation, and moderately impaired systemic ventricular function cause congestive cardiac failure. We report here a case of drug overdose with …

Characterization Of Glycation Adducts On Human Serum Albumin By Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/ Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, Chunling Wa, Ronald Cerny, William A. Clarke, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

Background—Non-enzymatic glycation of human serum albumin (HSA) is associated with the long-term complications of diabetes. We examined the structure and location of modifications on minimally glycated HSA and considered their possible impact on the binding of drugs to this protein.

Methods—Minimally glycated and normal HSA (used as a control) were digested with trypsin, Glu-C or Lys-C, followed by fractionation of the resulting peptides and their analysis by matrixassisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to determine the structures and locations of glycation adducts.

Results—Several specific lysine and arginine residues were identified as modification sites in minimally glycated …

The Evolutionary Origins Of Human Patience: Temporal Preferences In Chimpanzees, Bonobos, And Human Adults, Alexandra G. Rosati, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Brian Hare, Marc D. Hauser Oct 2007

The Evolutionary Origins Of Human Patience: Temporal Preferences In Chimpanzees, Bonobos, And Human Adults, Alexandra G. Rosati, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Brian Hare, Marc D. Hauser

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

To make adaptive choices, individuals must sometimes exhibit patience, forgoing immediate benefits to acquire more valuable future rewards [1–3]. Although humans account for future consequences when making temporal decisions [4], many animal species wait only a few seconds for delayed benefits [5– 10]. Current research thus suggests a phylogenetic gap between patient humans and impulsive, present-oriented animals [9, 11], a distinction with implications for our understanding of economic decision making [12] and the origins of human cooperation [13]. On the basis of a series of experimental results, we reject this conclusion. First, bonobos (Pan paniscus) and chimpanzees ( …

Effect Of Climatic Warming On The Pacific Walrus, And Potential Modification Of Its Helminth Fauna [Critical Comment], Robert L. Rausch, John C, George, Harry K. Brower Oct 2007

Effect Of Climatic Warming On The Pacific Walrus, And Potential Modification Of Its Helminth Fauna [Critical Comment], Robert L. Rausch, John C, George, Harry K. Brower

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The decreasing extent of sea-ice in the arctic basin as a consequence of climatic warming is modifying the behavior and diets of pagophilic pinnipeds, including the Pacific walrus, Odobenus rosmarus divergens Illiger, the species emphasized here. Mammals such as the walrus and bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus (Erxleben), cannot remain associated with the sea-ice, and continue to feed on their usual diet of benthic invertebrates inhabiting coastal waters to a depth of approximately 100 m, when the northwestward retreating ice reaches deep waters beyond the margins of the continental shelf. With reduction of their customary substrate (ice), the walrus has become …

The Daughters Of Charity As Civil War Nurses, Caring Without Boundaries, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C. Oct 2007

The Daughters Of Charity As Civil War Nurses, Caring Without Boundaries, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Betty Ann McNeil uses the words and experiences of five Daughters of Charity to illustrate the service of the 270 sisters who nursed wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War in Union and Confederate territory. According to McNeil, the sisters “crossed boundaries of locale, politics, and religion . . . for the sake of the Vincentian mission.” This included crossing army lines. They faced great personal danger and hardship and adapted their organization to meet ever changing wartime conditions in a variety of settings, including major battlefields. They also had to acclimate themselves to regional cultures. Despite the …

Risk Factors For Hiv Transmission Among Hispanic Men Who Have Sex With Men In Atlanta, Valerie A. Hepburn, Denyse N. Nanan

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

This study assessed and compared demographic factors, psychosocial factors, health seeking behavior, and sexual practices of two convenience samples of Hispanic/Latino gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM) in the metropolitan Atlanta region. The aim was to obtain data on emerging HIV/AIDS patterns in this group. Bilingual surveys were conducted in 2000 and 2006 at local gay bars. Discrepancies observed between HIV/AIDS knowledge and sexual behaviors in 2000 were replicated in 2006. Contrary to expected improvements due to enhanced HIV/AIDS education and awareness, risk behavior for HIV/STDs increased significantly between 2000 and 2006. These findings should inform …

Health Literacy Levels Among Adult Support Group Members And The General Adult Public : A Focus Group Approach, Daniel R. Czech, June Alberto, A. Barry Joyner

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Health literacy has been identified as lacking in 47% of Americans (The National Academies, 2004). While health literacy reports of studies conducted in the southern section of the United States are available (DeWalt et al., 2004; Kennen et al. 2005), this research team found limited research that provides health literacy levels of the southeast, rural Georgia population. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine and compare health literacy of health-related support group members and non group members in southeast Georgia utilizing a focus group methodology developed by Kreuger (1994). After Institutional Review Board approval at a local university, …

A New Letter Of Felix De Andreis, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Oct 2007

A New Letter Of Felix De Andreis, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

In his introduction to this 1817 letter of Felix De Andreis, John Rybolt notes that it is of particular significance because it is the only one De Andreis wrote while he was in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri. Rybolt writes, “In this letter his response to the difficulties he faced is typical of the perspective seen throughout his correspondence: redemptive suffering, personal humility against the backdrop of his fame and success in Rome, a reliance on divine providence for the future of his mission.” De Andreis recounts the hardships of the frontier and describes his parishioners and his ministry among them. He …

Handing On The Charism: Reporting On An Oral History Project, Kathleen Flanagan S.C., Mary Ellen Gleason S.C., Carole Garibaldi Rogers

Vincentian Studies

“Handing on the Charism,” part of a larger oral history project, was a series of interviews conducted in 2002 and 2003 among the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, their associates, and other women the Sisters helped or influenced. The article gives this New Jersey community’s history, explains the project’s methodology, and provides long excerpts from the interview transcripts. It provides conclusions about how the Sisters’ charism is being passed down as well as recommendations for how to further include the laity in it.

Toward A Population Health Model Of Segmented Assimilation: The Case Of Low Birth Weight In Los Angeles, Brian K. Finch, Nelson Lim, William Perez, D. Phuong Do Oct 2007

Toward A Population Health Model Of Segmented Assimilation: The Case Of Low Birth Weight In Los Angeles, Brian K. Finch, Nelson Lim, William Perez, D. Phuong Do

Faculty Publications

The authors adapt the segmented assimilation theory to a model population health, which posits that assimilation is actually harmful to migrants' health. The authors also specify models of individual and contextual factors to indirectly test the theory of segmented assimilation - a theory that posits interactions between individual and residential circumstances. Using Year 2000 vital statistics data merged with 2000 U.S. census data from Los Angeles County, the authors model the probability of being born low birth weight among the native and foreign born. Results confirm an immigrant advantage at the individual level and protective effects of immigrant coresidence at …

Empirical Evaluation Of Physical Activity Recommendations For Weight Control In Women, Suzanne Phelan, Marta Roberts, Wei Lang, Rena R. Wing Oct 2007

Empirical Evaluation Of Physical Activity Recommendations For Weight Control In Women, Suzanne Phelan, Marta Roberts, Wei Lang, Rena R. Wing

Kinesiology and Public Health

Purpose:Recent recommendations advise 30-60 min of physical activity per day to prevent weight gain and 60-90 min to prevent weight regain. No studies have used objective measures of physical activity to verify these public health recommendations. The purpose of this study was to use objective measures to quantify the amount and intensity of physical activity in a weight-loss-maintainer group and an always-normal-weight group, and, thus, empirically evaluate the recommendations for prevention of weight gain versus regain.

Methods: The weight-loss-maintainer group (N= 135) lost ≥ 30.6 kg, maintained ≥ 10% weight loss for 14.2 yr, and had a BMI of …

Internal Disinhibition Predicts Weight Regain Following Weight Loss And Weight Loss Maintenance, Heather M. Niemeier, Suzanne Phelan, Joseph L. Fava, Rena R. Wing

Kinesiology and Public Health

Objective: The disinhibition scale of the Eating Inventory predicts weight loss outcome; however, it may include multiple factors. The purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of the disinhibition scale and determine how its factors independently relate to long-term weight loss outcomes.
Research Methods and Procedures: Exploratory factor analysis of the disinhibition scale was conducted on 286 participants in a behavioral weight loss trial (TRIM), and confirmatory factor analysis was conducted on 3345 members of the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), a registry of successful weight loss maintainers. Multivariate regressions were used to examine the relationships between …
