Bridging The Gap With Old Order Amish: A Cultural Brokering Model Based On Culture Care Theory, Sharon M. Mcgill
Theses and Graduate Projects
The Old Order Amish people have chosen to live a humble lifestyle consistent with their cultural beliefs and values. This lifestyle guides the Amish people in utilizing home based care (generic care) for their everyday health need.s and professional care (Western medical- care) to meet their needs during a health crisis. In fact many Old Order Amish seek professional care as the last resort. The purpose of this protect is to develop a model of advanced transcultural nursing practice that bridges the gaps between the Old Order Amish generic care practices and Western professional health care practices - This model …

Pyridinium Bis-Retinoids A2-Dopamine And A2-Cadaverine: Implications In Age-Related Macular Degeneration And Cancer, Mckenzie Ruth Pew
Theses and Dissertations
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the United States of America. The pyridinium bis-retinoid A2-ethanolamine (A2E) has been implicated to play a role in AMD. We have observed novel pyridinium bis-retinoids through melanolipofuscin and human RPE extractions that may also play a role in the pathology of AMD. We have begun the construction of an amino-retinoid library in order to identify these ocular compounds. The compounds from the amino-retinoid library are also used in a targeted and triggered drug delivery system for treating cancer. Folic acid is coupled with the amino-retinoids to specifically target cancer …

The Hidden Impact Of A Criminal Conviction: A Brief Overview Of Collateral Consequences In Alaska, Deborah Periman
The Hidden Impact Of A Criminal Conviction: A Brief Overview Of Collateral Consequences In Alaska, Deborah Periman
UAAJC Occasional Papers
Collateral consequences, a term used in this paper to refer generally to the effect of any measure that might increase the negative consequences of a criminal conviction, fall roughly into three categories: impaired access to, or enjoyment of, the ordinary rights and benefits associated with citizenship or residency, such as voting or driving; impaired economic opportunity, primarily through reduction of the range of available employment; and increased severity of sanctions in any subsequent criminal proceeding brought against the offender. These indirect but significant consequences of a felony or misdemeanor conviction are receiving increasing attention from policy makers, ethicists, and the …

Evaluation Of Selected Ground Water Abatement Strategies For Two Produced Water Impact Sites, Katharyn M. Lee
Evaluation Of Selected Ground Water Abatement Strategies For Two Produced Water Impact Sites, Katharyn M. Lee
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Past practices of produced water management in southeastern New Mexico have caused impact to ground water at numerous locations. Impacted ground water shows elevated levels of dissolved solids, including chloride and in some cases petroleum hydrocarbons. Operators must abate ground water impacts to comply with New Mexico Oil Conservation Division Rules. This paper discusses the environmental costs associated with several ground water abatement strategies that might be employed to cause ground water quality to meet the New Mexico ground water standard for chloride (250 mg/L). This investigation examines two sites that exhibit ground water chloride concentrations ranging from 5,000 mg/L …
Barriers To Medicare Hospice Utilization: A Qualitative Study Of Maine's Medicare Hospice Providers, Judith B. Tupper Dhed, Ches, Cpps
Barriers To Medicare Hospice Utilization: A Qualitative Study Of Maine's Medicare Hospice Providers, Judith B. Tupper Dhed, Ches, Cpps
Disability & Aging
This report, prepared for the Maine Hospice Council and funded by the Carpenter Foundation, presents findings of a qualitative study of barriers to hospice utilization. This study includes the perspectives of all 26 Medicare certified hospice providers in Maine. Significant findings of the qualitative study include: A continuing need to educate the general public about hospice and the Medicare benefit. Maine health care providers have low referral rates to the hospice programs and often misunderstand the regulations and guidelines of the hospice benefit. The referral process to hospice programs is based on fragile systems of communication, fraught with potential miscues, …

Communication And Culture: Implications For Hispanic Mothers With Deaf Children, Alliete Rodriguez Alfano
Communication And Culture: Implications For Hispanic Mothers With Deaf Children, Alliete Rodriguez Alfano
Open Access Dissertations
The majority of deaf children are born to hearing parents. The fact that many of these children use sign language as their primary form of communication poses a unique language barrier between them and their hearing families. In addition, for children who are born into Hispanic families, these children have limited access to Hispanic and Deaf cultures unless their families actively pursue involvement with those communities. Data were collected through ethnographic interviews and limited participant observation and analyzed by means of grounded theory methodology. The study investigated how Hispanic mothers communicate with their deaf children who use ASL as their …
Spatial Dynamics In The Growth And Spread Of Halimeda And Dictyota In Florida Reefs: A Simulation Modeling Approach, Aletta T. Yñiguez
Spatial Dynamics In The Growth And Spread Of Halimeda And Dictyota In Florida Reefs: A Simulation Modeling Approach, Aletta T. Yñiguez
Open Access Dissertations
Macroalgae are an important part of the coral reef ecosystem that has largely been overlooked. However, in the past few decades their abundances have increased and this has been attributed to combinations of coral mortality opening up space in the reef, decreased grazing and increased nutrient load in reefs. This dissertation illustrates a novel means of investigating the effect of various growth and disturbance factors on the dynamics of macroalgae at three different levels (individual, population and 3-species community). Macroalgae are modular and clonal organisms that have differing morphologies depending on the environment to which they are exposed. These traits …
Estimating Sensitivity And Specificity From A Phase 2 Biomarker Study That Allows For Early Termination, Margaret S. Pepe Phd
Estimating Sensitivity And Specificity From A Phase 2 Biomarker Study That Allows For Early Termination, Margaret S. Pepe Phd
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Development of a disease screening biomarker involves several phases. In phase 2 its sensitivity and specificity is compared with established thresholds for minimally acceptable performance. Since we anticipate that most candidate markers will not prove to be useful and availability of specimens and funding is limited, early termination of a study is appropriate if accumulating data indicate that the marker is inadequate. Yet, for markers that complete phase 2, we seek estimates of sensitivity and specificity to proceed with the design of subsequent phase 3 studies.
We suggest early stopping criteria and estimation procedures that adjust for bias caused by …

Public Health Campaigns To Change Industry Practices That Damage Health: An Analysis Of 12 Case Studies, Nicholas Freudenberg, Sarah Picard Bradley, Monica Serrano
Publications and Research
Industry practices such as advertising, production of unsafe products, and efforts to defeat health legislation play a major role in current patterns of U.S. ill health. Changing these practices may be a promising strategy to promote health. The authors analyze 12 campaigns designed to modify the health-related practices of U.S. corporations in the alcohol, automobile, food and beverage, firearms, pharmaceutical, and tobacco industries. The objectives are to examine the interactions between advocacy campaigns and industry opponents; explore the roles of government, researchers, and media; and identify characteristics of campaigns that are effective in changing health-damaging practices. The authors compared campaigns …

A Comparison Of An Individually Tailored And A Standardized Asthma Self-Management Education Program, Judy Ann Shackelford
A Comparison Of An Individually Tailored And A Standardized Asthma Self-Management Education Program, Judy Ann Shackelford
Dissertations
Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the United States (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2003). According to the CDC (2003), prevalence of asthma continues to rise in epidemic proportions and is very costly. While asthma cannot be prevented or cured, it can be controlled to improve quality of life. Self-management is key to controlling asthma (CDC, 2003; National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute [NHLBI], 2002). State of the science for asthma self-management establishes that health care costs decrease for self-management intervention groups (Lindberg et al, 2002; Thoonen et al, 2003). Education is essential to support asthma …

Summary Of Trapping Regulations For Fur Harvesting In The United States, Gordon Batcheller, Furbearer Conservation Technical Work Group
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
A “Summary of Trapping Regulations for Fur Harvesting in the United States and Canada” was originally conducted by the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Fur Resources Technical Subcommittee in 1995. Over the last decade trapping devices and methods, as well as the regulations that guide them have undergone changes. The summary data of furbearer trapping regulations contained in this report were gathered during the summer/fall of 2007 in an effort to capture those regulation changes and report the current conditions and restrictions within existing laws for the harvest of 26 species of furbearers by regulated trapping throughout the …
