"Complete Liberty"? Gender, Sexuality, Race, And Social Change On The Lower Columbia River, 1805-1838, Gray H. Whaley

Publications

This article analyzes social change in the emerging colonial world of the lower Columbia River from 1805 to 1838, particularly regarding gender and sexuality. It teases out distinctions among formal marriages, informal “custom of the country” arrangements, the exercise of sexual “liberties” by young Chinookan women, and prostitution, revealing much of the complex sexual interactions between natives and newcomers. Such a focus illuminates critical, interpersonal aspects of fur trade society in this region as it developed into a complex colonial milieu, reflecting both indigenous and Western interests. The Constitutionality Of Open Space Requirements And Minimum Lot Sizes, Matthew Weiss Oct 2007

The Constitutionality Of Open Space Requirements And Minimum Lot Sizes, Matthew Weiss

Land Use Clinic

The United States Supreme Court and other federal and state courts have consistently dismissed challenges against open space requirements and reductions in minimum lot sizes similar to those that exist within ordinances regulating conservation subdivisions. Although some precedent exists for finding open space requirements and minimum lot sizes unconstitutional, courts have only reached such conclusions in limited situations where the challenged regulations destroy the entire economic value of a plaintiff’s property, where there is no rational basis for the regulations, or where the land use regulation is found to substantially interfere with the property owner’s use and enjoyment of their …

Requirement Of Α And Β Subunit Transmembrane Helix Separation For Integrin Outside-In Signaling, Jieqing Zhu, Christopher V. Carman, Minsoo Kim, Motomu Shimaoka, Timothy A. Springer, Bing Hao Luo

Faculty Publications

Adhesion to extracellular ligands through integrins regulates cell shape, migration, growth, and survival. How integrins transmit signals in the outside-to-in direction remains unknown. Whereas in resting integrins the α and β subunit transmembrane domains are associated, ligand binding promotes dissociation and separation of these domains. Here we address whether such separation is required for outside-in signaling. By introduction of an intersubunit disulfide bond, we generated mutant integrin αIIbβ3 with blocked transmembrane separation that binds ligand, mediates adhesion, adopts an extended conformation after ligand binding, and forms antibody-induced macroclusters on the cell surface similarly to wild type. However, the mutant integrin …
