Background: Selenocysteine (Sec) is a selenium-containing amino acid that is co-translationally inserted into nascent polypeptides by recoding UGA codons. Selenoproteins occur in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, but the selenoprotein content of organisms (selenoproteome) is highly variable and some organisms do not utilize Sec at all.
Results: We analyzed the selenoproteomes of several model eukaryotes and detected 26 and 29 selenoprotein genes in the green algae Ostreococcus tauri and Ostreococcus lucimarinus, respectively, five in the social amoebae Dictyostelium discoideum, three in the fly Drosophila pseudoobscura, and 16 in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, including several new selenoproteins. Distinct selenoprotein …

This study was conducted from March through May, 2007. The sampling and observation method for the present study is designed to be generally comparable to the 1995 study while incorporating some adjustments. The general approach to the design is to sample from every county in the state, to distribute observation sites across counties according to their population, to select locations where traffic must come to a complete stop in order to allow observation of both front-seat and rear-seat child restraint details, and to select a mix of signalized (RGA) intersections and stop-sign-controlled intersections according to their traffic volume. This probability-based …

Cityland – Vol. 4, No. 9, Center For New York City Law
CityLand - 2007
The October 2007 issue of CityLand covers major land use, preservation, and development actions across New York City. The City Council approved DEP’s expansion of the Hunts Point water treatment plant, despite concerns over odor and air quality. The Upper West Side rezoning plan was modified to accommodate Jewish Home & Hospital, with restrictions negotiated by Council Member Katz. The Planning Commission approved the Bedford-Stuyvesant rezoning, the Trader Joe’s development in Cobble Hill, and a 57-story mixed-use tower at 400 Fifth Avenue. Amendments to the High Line zoning text allowed the City to build amenities in exchange for developer fees. …

The NorthEast Under/graduate Research Organization for Neuroscience (N.E.U.R.O.N.) promotes preparation, education, and undergraduate research in Neuroscience. The N.E.U.R.O.N. Conference was initially held at undergraduate institutions primarily in New England. Then, for the previous two years, to broaden its impact and increase diversity, the meeting moved to Hunter College, CUNY, New York. This year represents the first year in which two N.E.U.R.O.N. meetings were held, one in Boston and one in New York City. The following is a report of the New York City meeting which was held at Hunter College on April 28, 2007. Eminent Neuroscientist, Dr. Carol Sue Carter, …

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Consideration of Aragorn’s mythical role as rightful and sacrificial king in The Lord of the Rings. Background: Interruption of flow through of cerebral blood vessels results in acute ischemic stroke. Subsequent breakdown of the blood brain barrier increases cerebral injury by the development of vasogenic edema and secondary hemorrhage known as hemorrhagic transformation (HT). Diabetes is a risk factor for stroke as well as poor outcome of stroke. The current study tested the hypothesis that diabetes-induced changes in the cerebral vasculature increase the risk of HT and augment ischemic injury.
Methods: Diabetic Goto-Kakizaki (GK) or control rats underwent 3 hours of middle cerebral artery occlusion and 21 h reperfusion followed by evaluation of infarct size, hemorrhage …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Pharmaceutical androgens and estrogens discharged into the aquatic environment are now known to induce adverse effects in fish and are a health concern for wildlife. Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) exposed to a pharmaceutical androgen, trenbolone, used to enhance cattle growth and found to pollute waters below feedlots in the USA, has been shown to alter the development of the anal fin of the females and disrupt gonopodium development in fry. In our work, we showed that altered gonopodium development was associated with disruption in the normal patterns of expression of 2 cloned androgen receptors. Furthermore, exposure to trenbolone at 1 µg/L …
