Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with decreased hippocampal volume, but the relationship between trauma and brain morphology in the absence of PTSD is less clear. In this study, measures of brain integrity were determined by estimating gray and white matter regional brain volumes using structural magnetic resonance imaging in six patients with PTSD and in five controls with comparable trauma exposure but without clinical evidence of PTSD. The only statistically significant volume difference between groups was observed multivariately in the white matter of the right temporal lobe (superior temporal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, white-matter stem, middle temporal gyrus, …

An In Vitro Assessment Of An Engineered Cationic Antimicrobial Peptide (Ecap) Against Planktonic Strains Of Enterococcus Faecalis., Kent Alexander Mcbride

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditionally, endodontic therapy has maintained very high success rates; however when teeth are obturated with a positive culture in the root canal, the success rate of treatment is only 68% (50). Therefore, complete elimination of bacteria from the root canal system is a crucial aspect of endodontic therapy. Studies consistently show that success rates for teeth that were necrotic before treatment are lower than cases with vital pulps. Consequently, efforts must be made to find a solution or method that more consistently disinfects the canals prior to obturation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new antimicrobial cationic …

However the difference on the right side was statistically significant (P=0.019) and poor correlation 0.17. The largest difference was 28° on the …

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole Jan 2007

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

he most recent trend in historic preservation has led many in the field to pay attention to cultural landscapes as historic resources. Considering buildings, structures, or objects within a given spatial and physical setting, or landscape, endows them with historic significance and context that would be absent if viewed individually. While this is somewhat of an expansive approach to the built environment, this trend in historic landscape interpretation still does not account for all types of resources that one finds in the field. A fragmentary landscape is a cultural landscape defined by three characteristics: 1) the presence of buildings, structures, …

Glimpses Of Wilsonianism: United States Involvement In Nicaragua During The Coolidge Era., Steven R. Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The military occupation of Nicaragua was one of the Calvin Coolidge administration’s most unpopular foreign policies. Upon the death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923, Coolidge inherited the White House and a Nicaraguan withdrawal plan set up years earlier. As planned, the United States monitored the Nicaraguan national elections in 1924, and withdrew its occupation force in 1925. When the country collapsed into civil war a few months later, the Coolidge administration ordered the Marines back into Nicaragua to restore order. Coolidge and his Secretary of State, Frank B. Kellogg, argued the occupation was necessary to protect American economic …

Effects Of Acceptance, Distraction, And Sensory Monitoring On Acute Pain And Attention., Brandon N. Kyle Jan 2007

Effects Of Acceptance, Distraction, And Sensory Monitoring On Acute Pain And Attention., Brandon N. Kyle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research has consistently shown a relation between attention and the experience of pain. Pain disrupts and demands attention, interfering with the ability to direct attention to other stimuli in the environment. Yet, various studies of pain management strategies, including studies which have yielded mixed results for the strategy of distraction, often have not specifically examined the relation of pain management, attention, and pain behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of different pain management strategies and the relation between strategy efficacy and attention in a laboratory pressure pain-induction experiment. Using 96 college undergraduates, the study employed …

Managing Welfare Stigma From The Other Side Of The Desk: A Look At Rural Tanf Caseworkers., Sarah L. Hartzell Jan 2007

Managing Welfare Stigma From The Other Side Of The Desk: A Look At Rural Tanf Caseworkers., Sarah L. Hartzell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Welfare recipients have always been stigmatized. The welfare reform legislation of 1996 reflects widespread attitudes and stereotypes of welfare recipients, which are translated into the structure of state welfare programs and are carried down through the administration to the welfare caseworker—the “face” of welfare for recipients. Literature on welfare stigma has focused on clients, but not their caseworkers. Using qualitative methods, this paper presents a Goffmanian analysis of the effects of welfare stigma on these caseworkers, who not only interact with clients in their jobs everyday, but who also implement a stigmatizing social program. The caseworkers in this study constructed …

The Byzantine Perspective Of The First Crusade: A Reexamination Of Alleged Treachery And Betrayal., Laura M. Nelson Jan 2007

The Byzantine Perspective Of The First Crusade: A Reexamination Of Alleged Treachery And Betrayal., Laura M. Nelson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Scholars have generally ignored the Crusades from the Byzantine perspective with the majority of scholarship focusing on the Western, and more recently, Arabic viewpoints. Western sources from the period such as the Gesta Francorum and the account of Fulcher of Chartres typically portray Alexius I, the Byzantine emperor during the First Crusade, as anti-Western. It is this study’s position that Alexius’s actions derived from a need to protect his people and empire rather than a desire to see the crusaders’ mission fail. By studying the Byzantine perspective, we gain a fuller understanding of the First Crusade and the Crusades as …

Determination Of Diel Chemical Cycle Presence Within Abandoned Coal Mine Drainage Streams In Harrison County, West Virginia., Michael Jay Smilley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diel (24-hour) cycling of dissolved ions has been linked to various mechanisms such as fluctuations in temperature and photosynthetically-mediated pH. Yttrium and the rare earth elements (YREE) appear to fluctuate in response to temperature. After selecting a field site based on pH and temperature screening, five sampling events were undertaken: each involved hourly or bihourly sampling with concurrent stage, pH and temperature logging. For all events, YREE increased during the nighttime and decreased during the daytime. Dissolved Fe and Mn exhibited similar trends at one of the two sampled locations. Speciation models suggest that sulfate and carbonate-bound YREE species dominate …
